New Bedford Man charged with attempted burglarly at Walgreens

A New Bedford man was arrested for cutting wires on the alarm system and attempting to break into the Walgreens Pharmacy at 1737 Acushnet Ave. Monday night.

Michael Alves, 27, of 86 Clifford St. Apt. 2W, New Bedford, was charged with malicious destruction of property $250 or more, carrying weapons on his person, possession of class E substance (Xanax), destruction of property $250 or less, interference with a police officer/escape from custody and a warrant arrest.

Police responded to a report of break in progress at Walgreens. A witness reported he cut the wires on a alarm system.

During booking, Alves skipped free of his handcuffs and attempted to run out but was caught before he could get away.

The incident was reported at about 10:30 p.m.

Oh my god this is one of my worst experiences of my life when I was going through my addictions… I’m in recovery now clean and sober but what is not accurate is that I did actually escape from that building but egos involved with enforcement couldn’t believe I could escape. Thank me for better security and safety at that police station, police and inmates are all safer now ! I’m truly sorry for this event in my life ! Support your local police please !
