Man charged after rolling car with woman and two children in Wareham

On Tuesday, at approximately 8:00 pm, Wareham PD, EMS, and Wareham Fire Department personnel responded to a single motor vehicle roll-over accident in the area of #426 Main St., which is located just north of the CVS Plaza.

Upon arrival at the scene, responding officers observed a vehicle overturned onto its hood and a female unconscious and breathing on the ground next to the passenger side, as well as a male and two small children, ages 4 and 5, who were standing outside of the overturned vehicle with an adult male.

The female, a 31 year old New Bedford resident, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Wareham EMS to be treated for serious injuries, including possible head trauma, while her two children were transported to Tobey Hospital to be checked for possible minor injuries. The adult male at the scene, identified as 31 year old Antonio Chaves of Taunton, had no apparent injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.

At this time, the adult female, who will not be named at this time, is reportedly in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Investigation of the incident by WPD Officer Joseph Cardoza revealed that Mr. Chaves operated the vehicle at a high rate of speed while traveling east on Main St. and struck a hydrant on the side of the road, which caused the vehicle to turn over onto its roof.

Antonio Chaves has been charged with Operating to Endanger and Operating After License Suspension; 6th Offense. Mr. Chaves will appear for arraignment on the criminal charges at Wareham District Court at a later date.
