Man arrested with 1,174 grams of heroin worth $100,000 in New Bedford

Heroin valued at more than $100,000 was taken off the streets Saturday when the New Bedford narcotics division arrested a Rhode Island man for trafficking in heroin (more than 1,000 grams.)

Detectives set up surveillance as part of an ongoing investigation targeting drug trafficking in New Bedford. During this investigation, police approached a vehicle at about 2:35 p.m. Saturday as it neared the intersection of Shawmut Avenue and Hathaway Boulevard.

Police asked the driver, Richard Aybar, 37, of 68 Hathaway St., Cranston, R.I., to exit the vehicle.

Police found a wrapped package protruding from Aybar’s waistband, which was determined to contain about 1,174 grams of heroin.
