New Bedford Police Detectives have made two arrests in connection with a shooting that injured a 60 year old man at 50 Tallman Street on Monday. U.S. Marshalls, who were working closely with New Bedford detectives, arrested the two in Bronx New York on Friday (today) afternoon.
The two were believed to be staying with a family member there. Once they are transported back to Massachusetts they will be facing the following charges;
Estefanie Helena, 19, of 351 North Front Street New Bedford.
1. Assault and Battery by discharge of a firearm (2 counts)
2. Malicious destruction of property
3. Carrying a loaded rifle/ shotgun on a way
4. Carrying a firearm without a license
5. Discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a bldg.
Justin Ortega, 20, of last known address of 183 Chancery Street New Bedford.
1. Assault and Battery by discharge of a firearm (2 counts)

4. Carrying a firearm without a license
5. Discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a bldg.
Mayor Jon Mitchell said “ I am pleased with the quick work of our police department with our federal partners to apprehend these dangerous suspects and ensure they off the streets of our community. We will continue these and other efforts to eradicate gun violence from our city.”
Chief Cordeiro said “This is another fine example of the men and women of this department working collaboratively with partner agencies. I want to thank the fine men and women of this department for the great work they do every day”.
