New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro announced that Lt. Amos Melo will be promoted to captain and will become commander of Station 3 in the North End District effective Oct. 15.

Lt. Melo brings nearly 30 years of experience to his new role, including nearly 20 years in leadership roles. He began his career with the New Bedford Police Department in 1989 and worked as a patrolman at all three stations until 1993, when he was promoted to detective in the Narcotics Division. He worked in Narcotics from 1993 to 1998, when he was promoted to sergeant.

He was assigned to the Professional Standards Division from 1998 to 2000. In 2000, he was assigned to the Juvenile, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Unit (now known as the family services unit) until 2006. He returned to uniform patrol until 2009, when he became supervisor of the School Resource Division.

He was promoted to lieutenant in 2014 and became a uniform patrol platoon commander until June 2016, when he was named public information officer and administrative assistant to Chief Cordeiro.

With his many years of dedication and experience, he will take pro-active measures to increase the quality of life in the North End district. He will replace Capt. Thomas Flood, who is out on extended personal leave.

“Lt. Amos Melo, a twenty-nine-year veteran, is a committed and passionate law enforcement officer,” said Police Chief Cordeiro. “He has a career track record of success in all of his assignments ranging from Narcotics Investigator, Sergeant in Professional Standards, Sergeant in Juvenile, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Unit, Commanding Officer of School Resource Officers, Platoon Commander of the Uniform Division, and recently as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief. Lt. Melo has the necessary leadership and organizational skills to lead the North End District. I am confident his leadership, management style, strategic mindset and community policing philosophy will serve the North End District well.”

“Lt. Melo is a hard-charging, experienced leader who will accelerate the Chief’s community policing strategy in the North End,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “I am confident that his impact will be felt immediately.”
