“Lakeville dispatch received a report of a basement fire at 39 Rhode Island Road at approximately 12:25 pm yesterday.
A full recall was transmitted for supplemental staffing and Engine 2 responded out with the 3 on-duty firefighters. Deputy Garant and Chief O’Brien also responded with the first report.
LPD arrived first and reported smoke coming from the home. With that report, a working fire assignment was requested from Plymouth County Control prior to the arrival of firefighters. Engine companies from Middleborough and Raynham responded to the scene. An engine from Freetown covered the station. The Middleborough Fire Chief also responded.
Firefighters arrived to find that the fire was actually in the attic. Two handlines were stretched into the home and the fire was quickly extinguished.
Lakeville Engine 1, Engine 3, Tower Ladder, and Ambulance 3 were staffed by recalled firefighters. A total of 21 firefighters were on scene.
Rhode Island Road was shut down by police during the fire. The building inspector responded and the Red Cross was summoned to provide shelter for the family.
Lakeville paramedics evaluated one occupant for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Crews performed overhaul and checked for extension. All crews were clear of the scene by 1:40 pm.
Lakeville Fire Chief Mike O’Brien would like to commend our Lakeville Firefighters for their response. The Chief is also grateful for the outstanding support of our mutual aid partners.
The early arrival of adequate numbers of firefighters made the difference today; this was only possible through the activation of our mutual aid plan.”-Lakeville Fire Department.
