I’m a firm believer that education is the key to good employment and employment is the key to solving most of our social issues. If you live in a city with high unemployment, you generally live in a city with high crime. This is especially true in areas with higher than usual youth unemployment. Give our teens and young adults work, and you give them something to focus on, learn responsibility and earn a wage to buy the things they want. The official unemployment rate for New Bedford was over 14% as of January, twice the state average. Generally, teen unemployment is two to three times higher than the average, so it makes sense to put a lot of energy and resources ensuring jobs for our young adults. The New Directions youth summer jobs application process has kicked off for anyone 14-21 years of age. They are accepting applications until March 29th, 2013. Here are the required steps to get a summer job:

1. Read through the FAQ to see if you qualify: http://newdirectionssouthcoast.org/upload/Youth%20FAQ%202013.pdf

2. Pre-register online here: https://www.massyouthemployment.org/apply/youth

4. You will be scheduled an appointment to pick up a full application. Fill it out and bring back all the required documentation.

5. If you are deemed eligible you will be placed into a summer job.
