Homicide Investigation of homeless man underway in New Bedford

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police investigators assigned to this office and Homicide Unit prosecutors are actively investigating an apparent homicide, which occurred in New Bedford.

The victim is a 41-year-old homeless man, who appears to have been living in a homeless encampment in the woods off of Nauset Street.

Investigators were led to his body, which was located in a heavily wooded adjacent to 47 Nauset Street early yesterday evening by two other homeless men who reported the death to police. The deceased is the apparent victim of a stabbing.

With the assistance of the New Bedford Fire Department, the deceased’s body was removed from the heavily vegetated area between 8 and 9 pm yesterday, and is now in the custody of the state Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death will be conducted.

The investigation into the apparent homicide is being coordinated by First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg.

As the victim’s next of kin has yet to be notified about the death, his identity cannot be publicly released at this time. The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing and no further information can be disseminated.
