Hit and run suspect assaults three New Bedford police officers

On Thursday at approximately 6:15 pm, police were dispatched to the area of Brock Avenue and Charles Street on report of a hit and run accident. Two parked vehicles were struck at this location. A plow driver witnessed the accident and gave police a detailed description of the vehicle which did the hit and run.

Officers located the suspected vehicle several blocks north on Brock Avenue where it struck another vehicle. The operator of the vehicle was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. As officers tried to arrest him he began struggling and punching them. Later at booking he kicked the booking sergeant.

Arrested was Luis C. Garcia 29 of 128 Thompson Street, New Bedford. He was charged with:
1. OUI liquor
2. leaving the scene of property damage
3. assault and battery on a police officer (3counts)
4. assault and battery dangerous weapon
5. warrant arrest
