26th Annual Greater New Bedford Home Show set for March 8-9th

The largest home and lifestyle show in the South Coast, the 26th Annual Greater New Bedford Home Show is set for Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9th! It will be held at the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School on 1121 Ashley Boulevard from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on both days.

It’s a fantastic opportunity for current or prospective home owners to network with the many exemplar businesses in the area that specialize in a variety of home service. SATURDAY, MARCH 8TH, SEMINAR AREA A

 11:30 Construction Seminar, presented by Pamela McLain, Mortgage Consultant at Bristol County Savings Bank:
Join us for an informative seminar to learn about the construction process and the financing options available for new home construction and remodeling projects. The seminar will be a brief presentation on Construction Loan and Home Rehabilitation Loan financing.The seminar offers a convenient format to learn more about the construction process and get answers to any questions you may have. Pam will help you determine the type of mortgage financing that best meets your needs.

 12:30 – The 5 Secrets of Effective Organizing, presented by Jennifer Tapper, owner of Tapper Richards Interiors:

This workshop with offer you easy solutions for establishing and maintaining the organization that is right for YOU! Jennifer will guide attendees on a journey starting with understanding what organization actually is to learning how to achieve it easily and inexpensively.

 1:30 – How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient and Comfortable, presented by Margie McNally, LEED AP from Next Step Living:

Learn how to make your home energy efficient and comfortable with a few simple steps including arranging for a no-cost home energy assessment; assessing the safety of your home heating system and combustion appliances; checking your insulation levels and window performance; making recommendations on how to upgrade affordably in these areas; and more! Margie is LEED certified and has many years of experience in sustainable design and energy efficiency.

 2:30 – New Bedford’s New Collection Program for Solid Waste and Recyclables, presented by Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, Recycling Coordinator, Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District, and Kenneth Blanchard, Director, Department of Facilities and Fleet Management, City of New Bedford:

Learn about New Bedford’s new collection program for solid waste and recycling. Starting June 23rd, ABC Disposal will collect solid waste and recyclable material in special wheeled carts. Residents will no longer need to separate recyclable material into multiple bins. All recyclable bottles, cans, paper and cardboard will be placed in one cart. Solid waste will be placed in a separate cart.

Topics cover will include automated collection; carts; bulky item collection; and much more!

 1:30 – Cooking demo presented by Cork Wine & Tapas’ Executive Chef, John Bentley

Chef Bentley will prepare a delicious lobster curry and jasmine rice dish during this entertaining cooking demonstration. Known as “Bentley” to his friends, colleagues, and fans, he is a creative and talented young chef creating cuisine unlike any other in the area. Originally from East Providence, RI, Bentley has worked in variety of establishments throughout the Southcoast and was one of Cork’s original cooks when they opened their doors in 2007.

SATURDAY, MARCH 8TH, SEMINAR AREA B

 1:00 PM – “A Very Small Miracle: Seed Starting Demonstration,” presented by Renate Oliver and Nancy Kurtz, both experienced gardeners and active members of Helfand Farms Community Garden.

Spring is right around the corner and it’s time to start to thinking about your garden! This demonstration will cover everything you need to know about planting seeds including what basic equipment is needed; when to start different seeds, veggies and flowers; seed viability and germination rates; direct seeding vs. growing transplants; starter fertilizers; keeping your seedlings healthy; and trouble shooting.

 2:00 PM – “Where the Wild Things Are: Gardening with Children,” presented by Renate Oliver and Nancy Kurtz, both experienced gardeners and active members of Helfand Farms Community Garden.

Learn how to keep it safe and make it fun when it comes to gardening with your children! During this demonstration, attendees will learn about easy to grow plants for the younger crowd; making it the child’s own “garden;” teaching the basics of plant needs; more challenging gardening skills for older children; how to identify good bugs, and bad bugs; and how to encourage you budding “Master Gardener” to use books or the internet to find out more about plants. Basic consideration: the child’s age and attention span.
