The power of a shared laugh. The compelling bonds of music. The camaraderie of old friends. For those of you who are fans of “Sex and the City,” “Desperate Housewives” or “Mamma Mia!” you have a guaranteed good time awaiting you when “Girls Night: The Musical” comes to the Zeiterion Theatre on Friday, June 26th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $29, $35 and $39 and can be purchased online at www.zeiterion.org or by calling (508) 994-2900.

The show is set in a karaoke bar where five girlfriends in their 30’s and 40’s have an outrageous evening reminiscing about the past, celebrating their current lives, and looking to the future. The show includes 15 popular musical selections such as “I Will Survive,” “It’s Raining Men,” “Man I Feel Like a Woman,” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”

“If you want to have fun dancing and singing in the aisles this show is for you – it’s one big party,” says Hannah Spacone, a member of the cast who hails from East Providence. The performance also includes another regional talent – Jillian Soares of Somerset.

Armand Marchand has been the Executive Producer for the New Bedford Festival Theatre for 25 years. He worked with Soares in “Gypsy” five years ago and Spacone in “Hairspray” three years ago. Both shows were performed at the Zeiterion.

“These girls are both ‘Triple Threats,’” Marchand says. “They can sing, dance and act. I would hire these girls any day of the week. They’re Broadway caliber actresses. I can’t wait to see them in this performance.”

“Knowing the crowd and playing to people I know will be a lot of fun,” Soares says. “I get butterflies thinking about it.”

Soares’ first visit to the Zeiterion came when she was a sophomore in high school when she attended a performance of “Cats.” She remembers the experience well.

“It’s a gorgeous room,” Soares says. “I’ve toured all over the nation and it’s one of my favorites.”
Spacone performed at the Zeiterion in 2012 as a member of “Hairspray!”

“I’m so stoked to get to perform near my home and be able to see so many faces I know,” she says. “Being able to make the people I know and love laugh is a great feeling.”

“People are going to fall in love with the characters in this play,” Soares says. “You’ll see how much they love each other. Secrets come to light but ultimately they’re worked out.”

“The characters are great friends who help each other,” Spacone says. But the bottom line is about five women out for a good time.

“These women really want to go out and have fun and feel beautiful,” Spacone says. “In your 40s it can be hard to do that but these women do.”

Spacone says that women often approach the actresses after the show and say that a certain character in the production reminds them of themselves or someone they know.

“There’s a lot of things in this production that women can relate to,” Spacone says. “There’s nothing sad about it, it’s a great time about five girls recalling growing up. There’s comedy throughout.”
And music throughout.

“All the music is fun and recognizable,” Spacone says. “People will get up and dance in the aisles.”
“The audience plays a big role throughout,” Soares says. “We want them to have as much fun as we do. There’s some adult humor, some PG-13 stuff. If we see that the audience is enjoying it we may go further with it.”

Soares says that the production can appeal to women of all ages.

“We’re definitely not man bashing,” she says. “Men in the audience enjoy it as much as the women. The audience will all leave with a smile on their face on a nice big high.”
