Four reasons why McGregor and the UFC have already beaten Mayweather and boxing

Unless you’ve been living off the grid or under a rock, you know that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are fighting this Saturday. Die-hard, not-well read boxing and MMA fans think it’s boxing versus MMA, but the real followers of the sports know it’s all about the money. Big money.

Undefeated Floyd Mayweather is fighting for his 50th win against a man who has never had a professional boxing match. Remember this as I go through my points. Besides being a loudmouth, what’s my qualifications to write this article? In my high school years I trained at Burgo’s House of Champions boxing gym in New Bedford (fought in the Golden Gloves in Fall River) and also trained MMA for many years.

Here are my 4 reasons why Conor McGregor and the UFC have already beaten Floyd Mayweather and boxing.

1. Vegas odds are close
As of this writing, most of Vegas has Mayweather around -475 and McGregor at +375. That makes Mayweather roughly a 5 to 1 favorite. That is mind numbing to me. As I stated before, Undefeated Mayweather is fighting for his 50th win against a man who has never had a professional boxing match. If I were a bookie, I’d set it at -3,000 for Mayweather. No way I’m losing my shirt. I could likely list a dozen outstanding boxers that Mayweather has fought that were bigger underdogs than McGregor. That speaks volumes about the UFC’s talent.

2. Conor is boxing Mayweather
That McGregor and Mayweather are only fighting a boxing match shows that McGregor has already won. A real competitor would have done a boxing match and a MMA match, but Floyd hasn’t been a real competitor in a decade. I’ll get to more of that later.

Generally, to fight someone of Floyd Mayweather’s caliber and pedigree, considered the greatest boxer ever by many, you need about 100 amateur boxing matches and 30+ professional fights. Boxing really is a sweet science and an art. McGregor is stepping in the ring against one of the greatest boxers of all time. Floyd would never step into a MMA match against anyone, let alone an MMA champion. One man is much braver than the other.

Lot’s of washed up boxers have jumped into MMA. Some have had limited success, but most have gotten destroyed. Basically, they’ve done it for the money because let’s face it, boxing isn’t know for their pensions and 401k’s. Conor McGregor is pound-for-pound one of the top UFC fighters and he is jumping head first into boxing against the top boxer in the world. Do you think Gennady Golovkin or Andre Ward would jump into the UFC and take on a champion like Max Holloway, Cody Garbrandt or Conor McGregor? We’ve already seen several WWE wrestlers like Brock Lesner and CM Punk fight top UFC competition with their first fight. It will never happen because boxing is too one dimensional to compete.

3. It’s always on Floyd’s terms
Floyd is the reason this fight didn’t happen a year ago and why we waited five years to see him fight Manny Pacquiao. Floyd’s 49-0 record is bogus. He is his own promoter and always fights on his terms – his desired weight, his location and his timing. He fought Manny Pacquiao 5 years late and injured, and just about everyone else on his terms and past their primes. He fought Oscar De La Hoya when he was old and Saul Alvarez when he was young and inexperienced. Even with all the advantages as the lead promoter, he hasn’t had a KO since 2011. This is also likely why he’s only -475 against McGregor in Vegas.

4. Floyd has to win big just to call it a victory
I’ll say it for a third time. Undefeated Floyd Mayweather is fighting for his 50th win against a man who has never had a professional boxing match. Unless Floyd wins in Mike Tyson fashion, it will be a loss for him professionally (not financially), even when his hand is raised. It doesn’t matter that he is getting older, he should make McGregor look absolutely foolish. Anything less will be a loss for his image as there will already be an asterisk by his 50-0 record.

In closing, it’s a win for both fighters as each will take home tens of millions of dollars, as they split what is likely to be over $300 million. A loss for McGregor really is meaningless, but a poor showing for Mayweather will be disastrous for boxing. My prediction is an easy Mayweather win inside the ring, but a McGregor and UFC victory outside the ring.
