Five killed in wrong way crash on 495 in Middleborough

Massachusetts State Police are on scene of a multiple-fatality crash involving a wrong-way driver on Route 495 in Middleborough. The crash involved two vehicles containing a total of five occupants; all five suffered fatal injuries. The crash occurred at approximately 12:11 a.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash involved a vehicle that was being operated southbound on the northbound side of the highway. That vehicle was occupied solely by a driver. That southbound wrong-way vehicle struck a vehicle occupied by four people that was traveling northbound.

Troopers are still gathering information about the victims. The facts and circumstances of the crash, including the cause of the wrong way operation, remain under investigation. The investigation is being conducted by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

The northbound side of the highway remains closed at this time.
