The Fairhaven Board of Selectmen made four conditional offers of employment for the position of police officer with the Fairhaven Police Department at their meeting Monday night. The four candidates are Matthew Sobral, Jerome Penha Jr., Jonathan Alves and Scott Coelho.

The employment offers are contingent upon each candidate successfully completing a medical screening, a physical abilities test and a psychological screening. Each candidate must also successfully complete the Massachusetts Police Training Committee Recruit Officer Class, which will be held at the Plymouth Police Academy. The police academy is a rigorous 21 week program that consists of practical exercises, physical training, defensive tactics, driver training and firearms training. Recruits also complete classroom training in areas such as criminal law, Constitutional law, motor vehicle law and other classes pertinent to the field of law enforcement.

The four applicants were interviewed Friday evening by the Board of Selectmen, Chief Michal Myers and Sergeant Kevin Kobza. All four are residents of the Town of Fairhaven. Upon successful completion of the medical and psychological screening and physical abilities test, the anticipated academy start date for the recruits will be March 26, 2015 with an expected graduation date just prior to Labor Day. Recruits that graduate from the police academy will then undergo field training with experienced officers of the Fairhaven Police Department.
