Fairhaven firefighters warning residents “the need for more firefighters has never been greater”

The Fairhaven Firefighters Association, Local 1555 took to social media warning the public on a major issue they are facing, short staffing.

“Today we were notified of a structure fire in the community. Medic 1 was tied up on medical as well as Medic 2. This left a single truck response for a structure fire. A full recall was struck bringing in 4 full time off duty personnel, and two call personnel.

A mutual aid Engine was requested from NBFD. Luckily, in this instance the fire had not yet extended from the garage. Members were able to contain the fire before the situation worsened. Our department is staffed with 2 engines, a ladder truck, and two ambulances. We cross staff our apparatus with the ambulance crews.

With each medical the town loses 33% of its fire protection, thus the single engine response to a reported fire. Having two ambulances tied up, leaving 1 engine to cover the town occurs multiple times per day. The need for more full time firefighters has never been greater and we appreciate the communities support in our future growth.”
