Boat Tours will be offered to the public with partnership between the Ocean Explorium, Zephyr Education Foundation and Buzzard’s Bay Coalition!

The Ocean Explorium and Buzzards Bay Coalition are teaming up with Zephyr Education Foundation of Woods Hole, Ma to offer on-water explorations of New Bedford inner and outer harbor, above and below the surface, during April school vacation week. Funded through a grant from the National Grid Foundation, the vessel will take students on four day trips out of New Bedford harbor to learn about the local marine environment.

Among the participants will be students enrolled in the Ocean Explorium’s Exploration Camp and in the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Trail Blazers camp during April vacation week. Other trips are reserved for Roosevelt Middle School students who are members of Leading Senoritas and Gentlemen’s Roundtable, or who attended this year’s Girls Interested in Real Life Science after-school program at the Ocean Explorium.

The public will also have a chance to explore New Bedford’s outer harbor. There will be two cruises hosted by the Ocean Explorium and the Buzzards Bay Coalition, on Wednesday, April 17, and on Thursday, April 18, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Seating is limited, and registration will be on a first come, first served basis. The cost for these two trips is $20 for members of either organization, $25 for non-members, and $15 for children. More information is available on the Ocean Explorium website, oceanexplorium.org.

“We are pleased to establish partnering opportunities with other groups, like the Zephyr Education Foundation and the Buzzards Bay Coalition, with whom we share a number of goals” stated Abbey Spargo. “Reaching out and teaching young people about their environment is critical to the future of our planet, and we are grateful to the National Grid Foundation for funding this opportunity. Showing students the diversity of marine life in and around New Bedford helps them grasp the concept of thinking globally while acting locally.”

Robert Hancock, Vice President for Education and Public Engagement, added that “The Buzzards Bay Coalition is excited to collaborate with Zephyr Education Foundation and the Ocean Explorium on these programs which support our shared goals of facilitating discovery and building stewardship for the Bay and oceans. We welcome people of all ages to join us for what will be a fantastic evening exploring Buzzards Bay from top to bottom.”

The Ocean Explorium is grateful to the City of New Bedford, the Harbor Development Commission and the Port Director, Jeffrey Stieb for helping us to bring this opportunity to the City.
