COMMUNITY CELEBRATES IMMIGRANTS IN RHODE ISLAND THROUGH STORYTELLING, AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2017
Welcoming Rhode Island, an initiative of Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, is proud to host the first installment of its traveling Welcoming RI Exhibit at Tiverton Public Library from August 18 to September 15, 2017. Located at 34 Roosevelt Avenue in Tiverton, Rhode Island, the exhibit is free and open to the public. The featured stories represent a collectively rich account of individuals’ and families’ challenges and successes in settling into an entirely new country and way of life. A closing celebration will take place on September 14 at 5:30pm featuring a cultural performance, food, and featured speakers.
“The Welcoming RI Exhibit is a unique opportunity to engage with stories of migration to a new country, which may be so unfamiliar to some people,” says Welcoming Rhode Island’s manager, Brandon Lozeau. “Sharing these stories is a crucial effort in celebrating our diversity and building welcoming & inclusive communities throughout Rhode Island.”
“In today’s political climate, it is too easy to point fingers at those who are different from us,” says Lozeau “creating a social divide instead of a sense of togetherness and community. When we take a few moments to learn the stories of our neighbors, we suddenly find that we have a lot more in common with an immigrant from Guatemala or a refugee from Syria than we first thought. We discover that what most of us seek is a safe place to work, raise families, and live life freely.”
Tiverton Public Library is pleased to host the exhibit and participate in this important initiative. They are excited to share their beautiful new space with the community and bring more worthwhile projects to the town.
Since 2011, Welcoming Rhode Island and the Global Studies program at Providence College have collaborated on the My Story, Our Community project. As a means of sharing stories of migration to the Ocean State, My Story, Our Community has brought together hundreds of college students and foreign-born Rhode Islanders in a concerted effort to recognize and celebrate the vibrant and incredibly diverse communities of our state.
The Welcoming RI Exhibit has been made possible through the generous support of Pawtucket Credit Union, Island Foundation, and a grant from the ADDD Fund at The Rhode Island Foundation, a charitable community trust serving the people of Rhode Island.
