Get some exercise, meet some great people and help a great cause that affects us all!

Get ready! Coming to New Bedford for the very first time is the annual Southeastern Massachusetts Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. One of many walks that occur nationwide, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

The walk is set for Sunday, September 28th at 8:30 a.m. at Fort Taber in New Bedford. Walk organizers have opened online registration and encourage walkers to form teams. There is no fee to participate, however teams and individuals can set up a free online fundraising webpage. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers.

Monies raised will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association MA/NH Chapter. James Wessler, President/CEO says, “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is critically important to funding cutting edge research as well and support services for people who are living with the disease.” Of great benefit are the many FREE programs and support services offered by the association for those dealing with Alzheimer’s.

The event will include an opening ceremony and special tribute paid to those who have experienced Alzheimer’s. The event will be emcee’d by Ashley Bendiksen of New Bedford who will provide remarks on her experience caring for her mother who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 48 years old. Other highlights for the Walk include free refreshments, children’s activities, a resource fair featuring local service providers and the opportunity to learn more about the services the Alzheimer’s Association provides.

In addition, Wessler adds, “The Southeastern Massachusetts Walk will also increase public awareness about this difficult disease. The Walk committee is already working hard to make it a powerful experience for everyone who participates.”

Let’s face it… We all know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s. Whether it’s a parent, grandparent, spouse, brother/sister, or even a child, Alzheimer’s is growing and affecting families at overwhelming rates. We know the challenge and devastation the disease brings to those who are diagnosed – as well as to those who provide love and care.

This September, you can do something positive to raise awareness, further research, fund support services, and effect change. This September, Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
