Drug Deal Between New Bedford and Taunton Residents Leads To Shootout; Identity Of Shooter Still Sought

Wednesday evening at 23:15 hours the Taunton Police Department responded to a call at 840 County Street for a report of multiple gunshots.

The information supplied by witnesses indicated two dark colored sedans racing through the parking lots of the condominium complex.

Responding Officers were directed to a rear parking lot (Lot D). A witness indicated that a subject had run into the woods behind lot D. Officers located a cellphone in the lot and multiple gun casings in the lot. Also located within a close proximity of the gun casings was a white blooded towel.

During the initial search no suspects or victims were located.

A short time later while Officers were still on scene they heard noises coming from the wooded area behind the complex. Two subjects were located. The male party was identified as Purvis Cole, age 22 of New Bedford MA. He had one gunshot wound to his chest area. The female was identified as Cortney Silveira, age 19 of 840 County Street.

Cole was transported by Brewster Ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.

During the search for the shooter two male parties were observed attempting to make it back to a car in the front of the complex that was consistent with the original description of the vehicles involved.

One juvenile subject was apprehended and the second party fled the area.

The juvenile was transported back to the police station. He is charged with: one count of Drug Possession Class D with the intent to distribute, one count of Witness Intimidation and one count of Disorderly Conduct. In his possession at the time of his arrest he had a mask in his pocket.

The second subject was located with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing helicopter. Their observations of the subject lying in heavy brush allowed the ground search to locate him.

Approximately 45 minutes later in the area of 600 County Street the second subject was taken into custody. He has been identified as Ozair Gomes, age 28 of Taunton. He is charged with one count of Drug Possession with the intent to distribute, one count Disorderly Conduct, one count of Disturbing the Peace and one count of Resisting Arrest.

Taunton Police Detectives responded to Rhode Island Hospital and the victim was uncooperative and disruptive in the Emergency Room. The Providence Police were called to the hospital and the victim left against medical advice.

All subject involved have refused to cooperate with the police investigation.

The Taunton Police Detective Division is continuing to work on the identity of the shooter(s).
