Driver Arrested After Rollover Crash in Newton

This morning at approximately 5:22 a.m., Trooper Scott Eunson responded to a rollover crash on Route 9 eastbound. A 2004 Ford Expedition knocked down a telephone pole and electrical wires, causing severe delays. Upon investigation, Trooper Eunson learned that the driver, JAMES E. COPELAND, 55, of Fitchburg, was driving with a suspended license. COPELAND was placed under arrest and booked at the State Police Barracks in Brighton, pending his arraignment at Newton District Court today. One lane of Route 9 was closed, and reopened by 6:18 a.m.

COPELAND was charged with the following offenses:

  1. Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended/revoked license;
  2. Negligent operation of a motor vehicle;
  3. Speeding; and
  4. Marked lanes violation.
