Downed Power Lines In Acushnet Create 1,000 Degree Temperatures That Turn Sand Into Glass, Create Lava

A major hazard is created when primary power lines fall to the ground. Earlier yesterday two power lines were brought down by strong winds on Leonard Street, Acushnet.

One line was found burning an area of sand, dirt and gravel alongside the paved road. Our thermal imaging camera recorded a surface temperature of over 1,000 degrees F. After the power was cut by the electric company, firefighters used 1,800 gallons of water to cool the area. We found one section of melted gravel and sand burned to the point that glass was created.

Being a curious group, we did some research on the internet and found the article linked below. A science experiment in the middle of Acushnet!
