Dartmouth Police start to carry Narcan

In light of the ongoing opioid crisis, effective immediately, the Dartmouth Police Department will be carrying and deploying Narcan.

Narcan™ (naloxone) is a prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose. It cannot be used to get a person high. If given to a person who has not taken opioids, it will not have any effect on him or her, since there is no opioid overdose to reverse.

According to Chief Robert W. Szala, “I am extremely happy that we are finally able to put this important and in some cases, lifesaving, initiative into place.

Whether your opinion of Narcan is good, bad or indifferent, it has proven to be a very effective tool for first responders when dealing with overdoses.

You cannot place a price on someone’s life, and if one of my officers can save the life of just one person, who knows how much positive impact that one person could have on the lives of others moving forward. To me, that sounds like the best kind of ‘pay-it-forward’ situation there is!”
All DPD personnel received Narcan training, and each cruiser will be outfitted it.
