Convicted sex offender arrested for taking upskirts in Wareham store

On Wednesday, April 6th at approximately 4:00 pm, Wareham Police Department officers responded to a clothing store in the Wareham Crossing Shopping complex regarding suspicious activity involving a male photographing a female patron. Further investigation of the incident revealed the male was in the process of taking photographs of the female that are commonly referred to as “Upskirts” with his cell phone. The suspect male reportedly fled the store when his activities were noticed by the startled female.

Further investigation of the incident by WPD detectives led to a warrant being obtained for 29 year old Onset, MA resident Gregory Allen Mattos, who is a listed Level 2 sex offender currently on bail for a previous charge of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender as the result of a previous unrelated Wareham case.

On Thursday, April 7th at approximately 1:00 pm, Mr. Mattos was arrested on the warrant during a cooperative effort by WPD detectives, members of the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and New Bedford PD detectives in New Bedford.

Gregory Allen Mattos was transported under arrest to the Wareham Police Department, then to Wareham District Court, where he was arraigned this morning on the criminal charge of Unlawful Sexual Surveillance.

During court proceedings today, Mr. Mattos’s bail was revoked on the previous Superior Court case, and he was ordered held on $7,500 cash bail on the new Wareham District Court case regarding the “Upskirt” photo incident at the Wareham Crossing shopping complex. Mr. Mattos is next scheduled to appear in court for pre-trial proceedings on May 9, 2016.
