Congressman Keating’s statement on recent Russian indictments

Below is a statement from Congressman Bill Keating, Ranking Member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a senior Member of the Homeland Security Committee, in response to this week’s indictments of Russian nationals and organizations. Congressman Keating is a former District Attorney in Massachusetts and has been assigned as a special prosecutor in the past.

“Today’s indictment puts an end to the speculation, denials, and claims of a witch hunt. Russia interfered in our 2016 elections. It happened, period. And it’s still happening. Facebook posts, tweets, blogs – all targeted and intentional – are happening right now.

“Just last month, President Trump ignored Congress’s directive to impose sanctions on Russia due in part to election interference. In light of today’s indictments, I am calling on him to impose those sanctions that were approved overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress.

“Those Members of Congress who have called for Special Counsel Mueller’s removal and released intelligence memos to undercut his investigation should cease their activities. The Deputy Attorney General specifically stated that Mueller’s investigation is not over. These indictments completely reinforce the need for that investigation to go unimpeded.”
