New Bedford High School’s Color Guard and the All-City Middle School Color Guard both placed in the New England Winter Guard Championships on April 4.

The All-City Middle School Color Guard took home a gold medal in the Festival Class.

The New Bedford High School Color Guard placed an extremely close second in a field of seven in the Guard Local Scholastic Regional A Class, with a personal best score of 90.75, just 0.4 points below the first place winner.

“The Winter Guard Competitions allow our Color Guard students to take center stage in a series of competitions designed to highlight technical excellence as well as creative expression,” said Kerri Quinlan-Zhou, director of fine arts for the School Department. “Our students and staff really pushed themselves this season and their final scores reflect their dedication to the craft.”

Superintendent Pia Durkin said, “I’m excited to celebrate the success of our New Bedford High Color Guard and the All-City Middle School Color Guard as they showed the rest of the state what we in New Bedford already know – that our kids are determined, hard-working, and succeed inside and outside of the classroom.”

For the 2015 season, the NBHS Winter Color Guard presented “Hamlet’s Nightmare,” exploring one of Shakespeare’s most famous works through shape and movement: The “To be or not to be” soliloquy from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

“When all was said and done, we found out that we got 2nd Place and were less than half a point away from first place,” said Tayler Medeiros, a senior and captain of the NBHS Color Guard. “It was a great feeling to know that I was part of a team that placed in the top three.”

“I would like to say how proud I am of these groups and their hard work this winter. The All-City group has a few first year participants so for them to do so well and earn a gold medal is a testament to their dedication,” said Tim Mason, co-director of the All-City Band, part of the All-City Middle School group, whose performance of ‘Vogue’ earned them first place.

The NBHS Color Guard is staffed by director Sarah Cadieux, instructor Channa Kim and Whalers Marching Band director Eric Drew. The All-City Middle School Color Guard is led by director Marla Cohen and ACMS Marching Band co-directors Matthew Pacheco and Timothy Mason.
