This Sunday will mark fifteen years since the terrorist attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001 that killed 2,977 persons.

As a gesture of remembrance and a reminder of the freedoms our nation has defended since the attacks, Mayor Jon Mitchell ordered a large American Flag to be displayed in front of the City’s Main Library on Pleasant Street through Sunday, September 11, 2016.

In addition, a piece an I-beam from the World Trade Center and an American flag flown in Afghanistan and donated by New Bedford resident and U.S. Army Veteran Craig Ribeiro has been relocated to the foyer of City Hall throughout the month of September. The I-beam and flag are displayed year-round in the Charles S. Ashley Public Meeting Room of New Bedford City Hall.

Finally, on the morning of Sunday, September 11th 2016, the New Bedford Fire Department will commemorate the event with a memorial exercise. Fire apparatus and available personnel will assemble in front of their respective stations throughout the city and observe a moment of silence at 10:00 A.M. Precisely at 10:05 A.M; the Fire Department signal room will announce over the department’s radio channel the collapse of the South Tower on September 11, 2001. Fire Department Chaplain, Rev. Robert Oliveira of the Holy Name of Sacred Heart Church will make a short address over the radio channel, followed by Mayor Mitchell and other officials.
