On Monday, December 16, 2013 at 5 o’clock in the evening, Mayor Jon Mitchell and members of the City Council will dedicate New Bedford City Hall’s Flag Plaza to the memory of New Bedford native Joseph Theodore, “The Flag Man.” The ceremony will be held on the steps of New Bedford City Hall at 133 William Street.

Joe Theodore was a twice-wounded World War II veteran who tirelessly promoted peace and respect for the Stars and Stripes, including successfully petitioning the United States Congress to require the American flag be lit at all times. His countless efforts to recognize the sacrifices of veterans in meaningful and innovative ways resulted in many patriotic events celebrated throughout the City.
