New Bedford firefighters respond to ‘Double Diamond’ boat fire

There was a fire yesterday on the Double Diamond docked in the New Bedford harbor. According to the New Bedford Fire Department, repairs were being conducted to forward berthing area of the boat using welding equipment too close to combustibles.

NBFD Engines 1, 11, 6, 8, Marine 38, Ladders 1, 3, Inspectors and District Chiefs responded to the scene. The fire was knocked down within 10 minutes and overhaul was completed within 45 minutes. The Double Diamand received approximately $100,000 in damages. No injuries were reported.

Police searching for tractor tractor that destroyed fire hydrant near Giammalvo’s

Police are searching for a tractor trailer truck that struck a fire hydrant, ripping it from its foundation and causing water to flood Logan Street at at 2:23 a.m. on Tuesday.

The incident also left a 10 foot by 8 foot exposed hole in the sidewalk where the hydrant was located. A large amount of water flowed into the basement at Giammalvo’s Market, 1914 Purchase St.

Police observed a white small-box tractor trailer make a turn north from Linden Street onto Purchase Street then east onto Logan Street.

The rear of the trailer drove over the southeast corner of the sidewalk outside Giammalvo’s Market. Seconds later, a strong flow of water gushed onto the sidewalk and police determined the fire hydrant had been struck and torn from its foundation.

Police were unable to immediately locate the vehicle.

The New Bedford Fire Department, Building Department, Department of Public Infrastructure and Eversource were notified. Work crews from DPI closed down Logan Street to repair the damage.

Man injured after two vessels collide five miles outside the New Bedford harbor

According to New Bedford Fire Department Chief Gomes, there was a collision between the 75′ FV Reflection and a 19′ recreational vessel with single occupant this afternoon. The incident occurred between Phonies Ledge and green #5 approximately 5 miles outside the New Bedford harbor.

A 65-year old male suffered a head injury. New Bedford Fire Department firefighters with medics aboard Marine 38 responded to the scene. The injured were transferred to Marine 38, treated for injuries and transported to Pier 3. The man with a head injury walked off under his own power. Towboat US towed the damaged vessel to shore.

NBFD, NBPD HDC, FHPD FHFD and the environmental of U.S. Coast Guard responded. The event is under investigation by EP and U.S. Coast Guard.
