Empire Ford donates Turkeys and hams to New Bedford families for Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! Empire Ford of New Bedford donated dozens of turkeys, hams, clothing and other food items to families at four New Bedford shelters could have a better Thanksgiving.

Is it ok to give Thanksgiving leftovers to your pooch? It depends

This week you would be hard pressed not to see endless memes and posts about what you can and can’t feed your devoted doggo after the Thanksgiving feast has ended. Obviously, you don’t want to give something to your prized pup that might hurt them or make them sick. Let’s cross some things right off the list:

DO NOT FEED THEM:

• Raisins
• Grapes
• Leeks
• Onion
• Garlic
• No bones (Duh!)
• Spicy Foods
• Fatty Foods (trim it!)
• Avoid Gravy
• Turkey skin
• Garlic bread
• Pie
• Booze (aww!)
• Ice Cream (if it has xylitol which is toxic and deadly)

Ok, so now you have a sad faced pup resting its head in your lap and its HUNGRY….well the good news is Turkey is just fine, white meat is much more preferable. Dogs will also enjoy some nicely prepared veggies (preferably steamed) and they won’t know the difference. String beans, asparagus and sweet potatoes are big crowd pleasers. A little bit of plain white bread is also fine if you know your dog doesn’t have any digestion issues. Remember, everything in moderation, a little goes a long way and the most important thing is making sure your pup has a long and happy life. Resist the urge to over indulge them, they’ll thank you for it and reward you with lots of love and kisses.

Oh, hey what about our other furry feline friends? Cats are Ok eating turkey too and we know how sneaky they will be if your plate is unattended. A lot of the same rules apply; avoid onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocados and nuts (especially walnuts and macadamia nuts which are especially toxic) Use common sense (and GOOGLE!) There are plenty of pet resources online to help. Better safe than sorry. Happy Thansgiving everyone!

Don’t let the winter blues set in when closing the pool for the season, let Aaron Pools & Spas take care of it

When temperatures reach approximately 65°F it’s time to close your pool. While no one wants to have to think about it, at a certain point in the year you have to address closing your pool for the season. An end to the center of social gatherings, fun with family and friends, exercise and more has to come to a conclusion until next summer.

As anyone who owns a pool knows, there is a considerable amount of upkeep, maintenance and care that comes with our pools. Opening your pool for the season isn’t as simple as pulling the cover off and jumping in. Inversely, neither does closing one’s pool consist of putting the cover on it.

There are, in fact, best practices for opening and closing your pool and in a day and age where most of us have work and family schedules absolutely filled with things to do, we often push off both for another day. Thankfully, there are professionals that can come to the rescue and close your pool for you.

The South Coast’s experts in all things related to pools and hot tubs is Aaron Pools & Spas, and when it comes to opening, maintaining, or closing one’s pool no one does it better.

The worst thing you can do is let all that debris fester away in a covered pool for the winter, wait for the hardness, alkaline or pH to become unbalanced, replace the filter, etc. and say to yourself “I’ll just do everything when I open the pool next summer.” That means a lot of work for you, perhaps more than you anticipated and when that super hot day does roll around and you want to just dive into your pool it’ll have to wait. Hopefully, there will be no damage and nothing will need to be repaired or cost more than usual. Being pro-active will save you money and stress.

To close a pool or winterize it means needing the tools, perhaps a Shop-Vac, Algaecide, chemistry test kit and strips, pH increaser and/or pH decreaser, a “shocker,” possibly Calcium hardness and Alkalinity increasers, Rubber plugs or straight pressure plugs for return jets, Metal sequestrant, a Winter Pill, and a winter pool cover/safety cover and pool cover weights.

It means maintaining a proper balance of chemicals to maintain calcium hardness between 180-220ppm, alkalinity between 80-120ppm and the pH balance between 7.2 and 7.6. It means cleaning the pool of debris, e.g. leaves, twigs, dead bugs, dirt. It means checking on the pumps, filter health, and draining the water from the pump and filter system to prevent ice buildup in them which could cause them to crack just like they do in our homes. It means covering it with a pool to prevent drowning accidents.

Sound like a lot? It is.

You don’t need to stress over it and you don’t need to set aside time in your busy life to do it – one phone call to Aaron Pools & Spas, done.

6 best lunch deals in New Bedford for $10 or under, Part 1

Everyone loves a good deal… especially those that involve food! America is a foodie culture par excellence. We love our food, we love trying new dishes and cuisines, we love discovering new restaurants.

Unfortunately, that can often come at a high price. That puts a serious damper on our beloved foodie experience. However, there are a fair number of places you can sate your foodie appetite – pardon the pun – and not break the bank. Whether you are just a frugal eater or simply having a tough weak financially so need to know where to go for the best deals in New Bedford, here is a guide to the ten best spots.

The following places are prices as of 2019 – we’ll update these articles annually.

_____________________________________________________________________________

1. Destination Soups’ Soups and Sandwiches

When it comes to lunch few things are less American than soup and sandwiches. All climates, all seasons, blue-collar and white-collar alike, everyone loves a hearty sandwich accompanied with a hot cup or bowl of soup. One of the joys of that love affair is the massive variety in the combinations. Often menus will offer standard pairings like Grilled cheese and tomato soup, Roast Beef and French Onion, Reuben and Matzo Ball Soup, et al but one of the great things about Destination Soups menu is the ability to mix and match in whatever way you wish.

While you can opt for a full sandwich with Cape Cod chips, going for the half/mini sandwich (between $2.50-$5.55) and a cup or bowl of soup ($3.80/$6) is the way to go. Starting at $2.50 for the mini grilled cheese (with tomato, avocado or meat options for extra $) and ending with $5.55 for the “The Beast” roast beef sandwich (sliced roast beef, bacon, pickled cucumber, roasted peppers, provolone, romaine) there is something for everyone.

99% of the menu is under $10 and there is only one single item that breaks the $10 barrier and that’s the “Wunderkind – the healthiest salad in town.” Even if you have a huge appetite and ordered a bowl of soup and a full sandwich – a feast -you’re in the $11 range.

I can’t recommend enough to either go for the “Turners Falls” (sliced ham, salami, cheddar, romaine, and tomato, pickled cucumber, choice of spread) or one of the seven types of “Specialty Grilled Cheese Fiesta” sandwich, especially the “Portucheese” (stuffed w/ground chourico, sauteed peppers, and onion) or the “Rick Cheese” (stuffed w/sliced apple, bacon, balsamic vinegar). Pair the “Turner Falls” with some clam chowder and the grilled cheese with a classic creamy tomato basil soup.

2. No Problemo’s Anything and Everything

The popular New Bedford landmark, No Problemo is popular by all segments of society. Stroll in at any given time and you will see politicians, lawyers, cops, hipsters, hippies, skateboarders, et al all mingling together and enjoying some of the best food in the city.

Besides the fact that the guys at No Problemo are just good people, there is the obvious fact that they make mouth-watering fare – something they have consistently done since they opened. The burrito that you fell in love with when they opened is the same one you’ll get when you walk in today.

However, their popularity also has much to do with their pricing: like Destination Soups there’s nothing on the menu over $10. You’d have to add all kinds of options like extra meat, extra guacamole, more sour cream to crack that benchmark. My personal favorite is the Tostada (Salad) and every once in a while, I’ll stray and get the El Diablo.

Is there anything bad that can be said about the New Bedford fixture? If there is, don’t tell me because I don’t need that kind of negativity and lies in my life.

3. Libad’s Pizza and a Beer

Libad Seaside’s pizza and a beer (or soda) is one of the best-kept secrets in the city. It seems that there is a hyper-focus on downtown when it comes to business, restaurants, cafes, etc. and much of the rest of the city gets neglected. Libad’s is one of those places that gets ignored but based on the quality of food coming out of the kitchen, the very affordable prices, the service, and the atmosphere Libad’s should be on the tip of everyone’s tongue – figuratively and literally. If you think it’s “Just a bar.” you are sadly mistaken.

They not only make some of the best pizza in the area but their personal pizza and a draft beer deal that starts at $6.50 (cheese pizza) puts them very high on the list when it comes to one of the best deals on the SouthCoast, perhaps the country. Pizza and a beer for $6.50 – most places will charge you $6.50 just for a beer. Heck, can you even get a combo meal at a fast-food chain for $6.50?

While there is much on their menu which you can see here and here that is under $10 you must have the Mozambique themed pizza (chicken, shrimp or scallops for $8) that comes with a small cup of Mozambique sauce. Being almost 50 and having lived about 40 of those years here on the SouthCoast I have a lot of Mozambique dishes and sauces and this is hands down one of the best I’ve ever had.

Because Libad’s is pushing the personal pizza and a beer/soda as a lunch service primarily you get this pizza so fast your head will spin. They cook the pizza on such high heat that a perfect pizza is ready in minutes. So, even if you only have 30 minutes for lunch you will be able to pull it off.

4. Pa Raffa’s

Pa Raffa’s is an eatery that is stuck in a time machine in a good way. Not only have they been around a long time (since 1964) and never tampered with their menu, portions, or dishes they have kept prices from an earlier time. They have uncharacteristically resisted raising their prices as the vast majority of restaurants do.

The most expensive single item is the Parmigiana Dinner for $13.50 but that comes with the entree, a choice of spaghetti/macaroni anda choice of salad, soup or garlic bread. The rest of the menu consists of items between $5-$10.

On top of those mind-boggling prices are the mind-boggling portions. pa Raffa’s is famous for the huge portions of food they serve. My recommendation is to go for the gargantuan Antipasto at $8.00 (for 50 cents more you can have tuna or chicken added) or the Baked Ziti served with a side of tomato sauce ($7.50), side of meat sauce ($8.50) or with Chicken and Broccoli ($9.50). All the baked ziti dishes come with a choice of Minestrone Soup, Salad, Veggie of the Day, French Fries, Spaghetti or Macaroni. Mamma mia!

5. Half Rotisserie Chicken Meal at Novo Mundo

It takes a lot for a Portuguese Restaurant to stand out in an ocean of Portuguese Restaurants on the SouthCoast – the majority of which are excellent. Novo Mundo does just that. Customer service, mouth-watering food, affordable prices, and an atmosphere that will make you feel like you are in Portugal hanging out with the guys and gals at a local spot.

Everything they do at Novo Mundo is hands-down amazing. I had the best steak of my life here – the Castela da Vaca. The open kitchen means you get to not only watch the masters at work but get to relish that amazing aroma wafting directly to your nostrils.

The best deal on their menu is the Half Rotisserie Chicken Meal for $8.49. It comes with half of a juicy chicken grilled to perfection, a side of rice, and a heaping of fresh, piping hot golden French fries. A feast! It comes with a cup of their famous “orange sauce” comprised of secret ingredients and goes good on everything. There’s no way you order anything off the menu, get your cup of secret sauce and not ask for a second cup or a cup to bring home.

6. Dee’s Hot Dogs

I don’t want to get beat up by half of New Bedford so I’m not going to declare any hot dog spot is the best in the city, but I will say that for as long as I can remember I have been going to one of the two Dee’s locations. There’s no point in stating the menu prices since everything is well under $10 and it simply comes down to how many things you order. Ut’s a safe bet that you can get two hot dogs, fries, and a soda for $10 or less. Alternatively, you could just get 4 hot dogs and a soda and be in that ballpark.

With so many hot dogs joints in the city to choose from, the way to differentiate yourself from the rest is with other offerings on the menu, e.g. stuffed quahogs, the freshness of the sides, and whether the chili sauce is homemade or from a can and heated up. One thing Dee’s offers that many don’t is a homemade linguica sauce and a Coney Island sauce. It’s different than a traditional chili sauce but similar in some ways. It’s darker, slightly sour (in a good way), and rich. It’s very delicious.

Best of all is that the only thing stopping you from having your food and walking away in 3 minutes or less is the queue. If you’re wise you simply avoid traditional times for lunch or dinner. Do that and you might only have one or two people ahead of you or even no one at all. If you don’t have much time for lunch or don’t have much in the wallet, Dee’s Hot Dogs is one of the best places in the city.

Mi Antojo transports Mexico and authentic, mouth-watering festive cuisine to New Bedford

When it comes to America’s favorite cuisines, there are usually three top contenders: Italian, Chinese and Mexican food. All three have a rich tradition here and all three have contributed immensely to the melting pot identity that characterizes America’s eating habits.

What comes to mind when someone mentions Mexican food? Most people think of taco, burritos and quesadillas and truth be told that many seldom go beyond eating those “big” three. This is a tragic loss – they are missing out on so much, especially when you consider the astounding variety of dishes, regional differences, a range from casual street food to 5-star fancy and everything in between, and even some of the indigenous influences that are creeping into many menus. It would be like saying that you love Italian food and only eating pizza, spaghetti or lasagna and never having anything else.

Ask someone where to get some good, authentic Mexican food and you may get some great suggestions, but the vast majority of them involving some driving that leaves us with a sum total of two great local spots to choose from. Sticking with the theme of threes, there is a third great local spot that many haven’t heard of in spite of the fact that it has been in New Bedford since 1996: Mi Antojo Mexican Restaurant.

Now, as Americans, we all know the great let-down that comes when claims of “authentic” are made. The word is an abused one. I lost track of the times I’ve heard “You have to go! It’s authentic!” only to find, to paraphrase Maury, “You are not that authentic!”

This however is NOT the case with Mi Antojo! Owner, Javier Rojas moved from Mexico’s heartland, Zacatecas to the U.S. in the early 90’s and founded Mi Antojo within a year. Since then he has opened three locations and survived and thrived on word of mouth. If you hadn’t heard people ranting and raving about Mi Antojo over the years, I’d be shocked.

The first time I ate at their location at 113 Conway Street, I was pleasantly surprised. This particular location does mostly takeout so I was excited for a sit down experience. I had never been to the 601 S 2nd St. spot and when I pulled up and saw the large size, colorful banners, and the crafted stonework on the outside I was caught off guard. For those of you unsure where that is, in terms of landmarks it’s right next door to the Howland Green Library and New Bedford Police Station #2.

When you open the door you travel through time-space and land in Señor Rojas’ home town of Zacatecas, Mexico. Straight away you hear Spanish in various dialects – a sure sign that the food must be darn good as well as authentic if nationals from many Spanish speaking countries are regulars. The interior is an explosion of festive pastels and bright reds, yellows, oranges, and reds. The decor is an eclectic mix of traditional Mexican pottery, paintings, knick-knacks, and clay tiles. That is one inviting and warm “Bienvenidos!

The expansive dining room ends with a large service counter and beyond that, you can peek into the kitchen and see the cooks and chefs at work and the aromas wafting out were increíble. For you Margarita, Sangria, and Tequila drinkers don’t fret: there is a large bar that seats a dozen and serves everything under the Mexican and American sun.

We arrived for early lunch and the dining room was already filling up, but we were seated immediately. After we sat down, in less than a minute the friendly, welcoming waitress came and we ordered our waters (yes, we’re boring) we pored over the menu and once again, I was shocked. I expected to open a menu that I would pretty much be able to guess. Tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, right? Wrong!

Not only were those items there and with many varieties, but there were also dozens of things I had never heard of. I’ve eaten at a lot of Mexican Restaurants, all over the world through the past 30 years and this menu has everything. I mean, everything.

When it comes to the quintessential Mexican fare all the standards for those of you who don’t like to rock the boat are there: 14 kinds of tacos, 6 kinds of quesadillas, 9 kinds of tortas and burritos, 7 kinds of fajitas, 7 kinds of enchiladas, and 5 kinds of gorditas. The kicker? The options: if you are not the adventurous type you can have your chicken, beef, chorizo, ham, shrimp, fish, bean or vegetarian. For those die-hard foodies you can have beef tongue, cow’s feet or tripe. Don’t be a wimp, gringo! Try it!

Of course, the standard flavors of al pastor (spit-grilled meat), mixto (combo), todas las carnes (“all the meats”), California (meat, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese), Milenesa (ultra-thin cut of meat, tenderized, seasoned, dipped in eggs, dredged in flour, and then quickly pan-fried on each side until super crisp), Tex-Mex, a la Diabla (spicy Chipotle sauce), or Ranchero (tomato-based sauce that includes onions, green serrano or jalapeno peppers, and mild seasoning) styles.

In addition, there is a large “Main Dishes” section for the kings and queens with big appetites, some amazing Cerviche options, 9 different kinds of soup and 10 types of “nachos preparados” to choose from.

For the little ones, there is a kids menu with all items between $2.99-$8.95: Chicken Fingers or Chicken Wings w/ fries or rice, and Cheese Quesadilla w/ fries or 1 taco (beef or chicken). All served with an agua fresca which is a popular Mexican drink made of water and fruit. There are also some dessert choices for them.

Hey, did you know Mexicans eat breakfast? Of course, you did but it sounds odd, right? Well, here’s a chance to broaden your horizons. Since Mi Antojo is open at 8:00 am that means you can have a hearty breakfast, one of ten different items to choose from.

A variety of fried or scrambled egg dishes with or without green/red sauce, refried beans, Mexican cheese, tomatoes, onions and choice of ham, chorizo, sausage. If you don’t want a meal, but something lighter there’s a choice of breakfast tacos (3 to a serving), a burrito, or a quesadilla – the latter two made with scrambled egg, tomato, onion, cheese, and beans.

If you think it sounds odd to you, England is famous for its breakfast which typically substitutes home fries with mashed potatoes with fresh grilled onions and leftover vegetables, grilled tomatoes, beans, and meats. Us Americans, in fact, love a wide assortment of omelets with all the ingredients you will find in the desayuno served at Mi Antojo.

Mike opted for the tostadas de ceviche and made the mistake of thinking four would be a meal. His mistake was that three would have been a meal! The fried corn tortilla base was made fresh to order, were piping hot and topped with generous portions of ceviche – a medley of seafood marinated in freshly squeezed key lime, sliced onions, chili peppers, salt, and pepper. He dressed them with one of the 4 different sauces already at the table – a different blend of flavors and spices in a variety of heats from mild to very spicy.

I felt it mandatory to get pupusas because I am, in fact, a pupusa connoisseur based on eating hundreds of them in my lifetime. They are one of my favorite of all Latin dishes. While pupusas are technically a Salvadoran dish, I’ve eaten them at many Mexican restaurants – when you eat one, you’ll understand why they have spread like wildfire throughout the cuisines of the Spanish speaking world.

When the “patties” arrive you may think “Oh, it’s hot, grilled bread.” However, these cakes of joy are stuffed with all manner of deliciosas: chicharrón (fried pork), beans, cheese, Revueltas (chicharrón, cheese, refried beans), or Queso con Loroco. Loroco is an edible flower found all over Mexico and Central America and the flowers and buds are used in the cuisine. Since they are affordable ($2.50), you can pick and choose so you can enjoy them all. These were hands-down some of the best I’ve ever had. If you stop in on Wednesdays pupusas are on special 3 for $3 and of course, every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday, which also 3 for $3.

The rest of the crew ordered a variety of tacos, fajitas, and their famous Molcajete Cielo Mar y Tierra. A molcajete is the stone bowl throughout Mexico in preparing many dishes that require the grinding of spices, herbs, peppers, and just about anything else. In this case, it is used to hold the absolutely massive bounty of food, the “mar y tierra,” or land and sea. The “land” refers to the heapings of seasoned and grilled beef, chicharrón, and shrimp as well as tomatoes, onions, and blackened poblanos, anaheims, serranos, jalapenos, and Queso Oaxaca which is similar to mozzarella cheese. The “sea” is the generous, large seasoned and grilled shrimp. Think of the Mexican version of a Chinese Pu Pu Platter on steroids.

How do you know that food is good? Imagine a table full of guys and no one is talking. Well, that is where the “cielo” part comes in: cielo means heaven or heavenly and this monster-sized bowl was just that.

The portions in all the dishes we had and could see at the other tables were ample and generous, especially so when you consider how affordable the prices are. Those prices allow Mi Antojo to have a recurring theme at its corazón: a family-owned and operated restaurant that encourages families to be patrons. Tacos Tuesdays is an absolutely great introduction to Mi Antojos since you and your family can have a feast without breaking the bank.

Once bitten you’ll find yourself visiting over and again as you explore the vast menu. Mi Antojo offers a menu for all people which means if you have the fussy eater who just wants tacos, or the foodie explorer who wants to try tripe or beef tongue you can all come together in one happy place.

Mi Antojo, of course, offers to-go ordering – something that also seems popular with the working class and there was a steady stream of take-out orders throughout our visit. If you have a special occasion like a work party, birthday, anniversary, even a quinceañera, Mi Antojo offers catering. Servers speak both Spanish and English.

Mi Antojo brings Mexico to New Bedford with recipes handed down through generations offering traditional, quintessential Mexican dishes as well as a few breaks from tradition with some new creations.

This just became one of my new favorite spots!

See more of their mouth-watering photos on their Facebook page here. I’m warning you! Drooling ahead!

New Bedford’s Bamboo Garden, once very popular Chinese Restaurant, to re-open Nov. 5

To the delight of many, one of New Bedford’s most popular Chinese Restaurants, Bamboo Garden is set to re-open on November 5th.

The Purchase Street eatery had been a downtown fixture since owner Wei Ng opened its doors in 1971 until it closed in 2018 because of a family illness. Wei’s daughter Lina said the restaurant will offer the same menu, same decor, using the same recipes her father cooked with, and that means the same delicious food everyone fell in love with.

If you have no memory to go by, you can ask around or visit one of the restaurant’s social media accounts which still exist. You will not only see their above-average ratings, but see what people are saying specifically and why the spot became so popular in the first place: very affordable prices (even with the whole family), expansive menu, traditional Chinese recipes, large portions, fresh ingredients, and speedy service.

Downtown will be without a Chinese Restaurant no more!
