Fall River man faces Fentanyl possession, trafficking, charges; allegedly seen texting while driving by Massachusetts State Police

“In the early morning of May 1, 2024, Trooper Stelvio Neto, a recent graduate of the 89th Recruit Training Troop, was on patrol with his field training officer Trooper Quinn Indio. The two Troopers were conducting traffic enforcement in Fall River as part of the Dartmouth Barracks midnight shift. While observing traffic on Pleasant Street, Trooper Neto observed a Nissan SUV being driven by a man holding his phone in front of him illuminating his face in the darkness of the morning hours.

Trooper Neto conducted a traffic stop of the Nissan and approached the operator, MICHAEL COUTO, 55, of Fall River. It was immediately determined that COUTO’s license was suspended. COUTO was removed from the vehicle and placed into handcuffs. Trooper Neto escorted COUTO to his cruiser and conducted a search of his person. Couto was found to be in possession of a golf ball sized baggie of fentanyl, and a smaller baggie of crack cocaine.

Once COUTO was secured in the rear of Trooper Neto’s cruiser, Trooper Neto and Trooper Indio conducted a search of the Nissan COUTO was driving. The search found, in a backpack in the interior, numerous individually bundled packages of fentanyl and a stun gun. COUTO does not possess a license to carry, as required by Massachusetts law to possess a stun gun.

COUTO was transported to the Dartmouth Barracks and booked, photographed, and fingerprinted. COUTO was determined to have roughly 79 grams of fentanyl and 8 grams of crack cocaine in his possession.

MICHAEL COUTO was arraigned in Fall River District Court on charges of:

• Trafficking in Fentanyl;
• Possession With Intent To Distribute Cocaine (Subsequent Offense);
• Possession Of Cocaine (Subsequent Offense);
• Possession Of Electric Stun Gun;
• Operation Of A Motor Vehicle With Suspended License; and

New Bedford’s Feast of the Blessed Sacrament welcomes women to committee in historic move

“Dear Club Members, Volunteers, Patrons and the Community,

As the President of the 108th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, it is with immense pride and joy that I write to you today about a momentous occasion in the history of our beloved Feast and Club. Today, we stand at the dawn of a new era of inclusivity and unity, as we welcome for the first time, women serving on the Feast Committee. This year, the 108th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament will be orchestrated not just by our brothers but also by our sisters, fathers, mothers, and grandparents. Together, we are a complete family, embarking on the journey to celebrate our cherished tradition in unity and love.

This very special day has been filled with overwhelming emotions for all of us involved. As we gathered for our meeting, the air was thick with anticipation and excitement. We had moments of tears, not of sorrow, but of overwhelming joy and pride. It was an emotional day, to say the least, but above all, it was a milestone—a testament to our growth as a community and our commitment to embracing change while honoring our traditions.

We are not just planning a feast; we are weaving the very fabric of our future, enriched by the diverse perspectives and talents of all our members. The inclusion of women on the committee brings a fresh and vibrant energy, promising to make this year’s feast not just memorable but truly epic.

I cannot express in mere words how proud I am of our Club and my Committee. Today, more than ever, we represent what it means to be inclusive, to be a family. There is no doubt in my mind that with this foundation of unity and diversity, the 108th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament will be the best we have ever celebrated.

Thank you to every member, volunteer, and supporter for being part of this historic journey. Your dedication and love for our tradition make all of this possible. Let us move forward with hearts full of joy and anticipation for what promises to be an unparalleled celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament.

With deepest gratitude and excitement,
Tony Abreu

South Hadley man ejected from fatal crash in Hatfield dragged into woods by bear

On Sunday morning Massachusetts State Police received several 911 calls about a damaged car on the side of the highway on I-91 in Hatfield.

Upon arrival, responders found the wreck of a Honda Civic and found a deceased man outside of the car and spotted a bear in the wood line near the scene. The bear immediately ran off into the woods.

Preliminary investigation by state police suggests that the lone occupant of the car, Daniel Ducharme, 31, of South Hadley, was driving on Route 91 when he lost control of the car for unknown reasons. He struck the guardrail multiple times, went down an embankment, and struck several trees in the woods.

“Evidence and observations at the scene suggest that the man was at least partially ejected from the car and most likely deceased as a result of the crash, before the bear made contact with the deceased.” Massachusetts State Police’s Dave Procopio said.

The crash is still under investigation.
