Driver nods off behind the wheel on Coffin Ave in New Bedford

At 10:12 pm on Sunday, New Bedford police discovered a car stopped in traffic near the old Sunbeam Bread factory on Coffin Ave. The operator wasn’t responsive and police officers suspect the driver was under the influence of a drug.

Medical personnel arrived and the operator was transported to the hospital. Charges of operating under the influence of drugs are forthcoming for the driver.

Additionally, an Acushnet man was charged with his third OUI-liquor on Sunday.

At 8:45 pm on Sunday, New Bedford police officers arrested 54-year old Scott Ellis of Acushnet for OUI-Liquor near the Care One building on Fitzgerald Drive in the north end of New Bedford.

According to police logs, this will be his third OUI charge.




Buttonwood Park Zoo Celebrates 125 Years with Zoobilation!

The Buttonwood Park Zoological Society is celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Zoo on Saturday, July 6, with “Zoobilation” – a celebration for the whole family.

“The 125th Anniversary of the Buttonwood Park Zoo deserves to be celebrated,” says Buttonwood Park Zoological Society Board Member and Chair of the 125th Anniversary Committee, Adrienne Beauregard-Rheaume, Esq. “The Zoo has been an integral part of the South Coast community and Zoobilation will be a celebration of the Zoo as a wonderful experience for kids and grownups alike.”

Zoobilation is the pinnacle event of the Zoo’s anniversary and will deliver excitement for the entire family. Event-goers will be treated to unlimited amusement rides, encounters with zoo animals, face painting, live music, and a complimentary ice cream sundae bar. Mad Science of Southern MA & RI will be entertaining and educating while a stilt walker and juggler amaze.

Moby Dick Brewing will be onsite with a specially brewed SMASH Ale, aptly named “Zoobilation” in honor of the 125th anniversary celebration. Westport Rivers Winery and Brother’s Artisanal will also be offering their products for sale.

The event isn’t just about celebrating, but also about remembering. To commemorate the 125 year history of the Zoo, the Buttonwood Park Zoological Society will be collecting photos and memories to display at the event and to place in a time capsule until the 150th anniversary celebration. Memories and photos can be brought day of or emailed in advance to 1894@bpzoo.org.

“It is my hope that Zoobilation will bring friends and families together to enjoy the Zoo and all it has to offer at a celebration designed for children and adults” said Beauregard-Rheaume.

Two separate motorcycle fatalities this weekend on the SouthCoast

Massachusetts State Police Troopers from the District Attorney’s office responded to two separate motorcycle crashes in the SouthCoast this weekend that resulted in fatalities.

The first incident occurred On Route 18 near the intersection with Walnut Street in New Bedford on Saturday evening around 7 pm. When police and rescue personnel arrived on scene, they located the victim, Andrew Mindyas, 63, of Westport, and rushed him to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was travelling at a high rate of speed through the intersection when he struck the curb, entered the center median and struck a large cobblestone planter. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The second fatal crash occurred on Sunday around 6:35 a.m. at the intersection of Route 177 and Tickle Road in Westport. When Westport Police and rescue personnel arrived on scene, they located the victim, Cornelis Blom, 67, of Somerset, off the roadway in a wooded area. He was determined to be deceased on scene by paramedics.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, who was operating a Ducati motorcycle in the westbound lane of travel on Route 177 struck the side of a Ford Ranger as the Ranger turned onto Route 177 from Tickle Road. The operator of the Ford Ranger, a 48-year-old Westport man, remained at the scene of the crash and was cooperative with investigators. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have any role in the collision. Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction analysis is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.




Massachusetts mom found guilty of stealing $35,716 in benefits intended for her children

A Sharon woman pleaded guilty on June 20th in federal court in Boston to stealing Social Security benefits intended for her children.

Stacey Orlando, 59, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of public funds. U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel scheduled sentencing for Sept. 18, 2019. Orlando was charged and arrested in May 2018.

From May 2011 through October 2013, Orlando stole Social Security benefits that were paid to her on behalf of her two children. The Government alleges that Orlando stole approximately $35,716 in benefits.

The charge of theft of public funds provides for a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Scott Antolik, Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Burzycki of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case.




New Bedford man arrested for allegedly exposing himself to a woman

On Saturday, June 22, at approximately 10 am, The New Bedford Police responded to the area of Brock Avenue and Portland Street after a woman called, stating a male had pulled up to her in his vehicle and exposed himself to her. The woman was able to provide a description of the male and the vehicle he was operating.

With the information provided by the victim, Police officers were able to locate the male, who was then placed under arrest. The male arrested, was identified as 41-year old Exequiel Abarca of New Bedford.

Mr. Exequiel was charged with open and gross lewdness and lewd and lascivious acts. The Detective Division is further investigating other similar incidents in the South End of the city that may be connected in the last two weeks. The New Bedford Police Department is asking anyone who has been exposed to any incidents similar in nature, to please contact the Detective Division at (508) 991-6300 ext. 79539.




North Attleboro Homicide Suspect Found Deceased in Rhode Island

The suspect wanted for the Saturday night homicide in North Attleboro was found deceased this evening in the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve in Charlestown, RI. The suspect was the victim of an apparent suicide.

A Narragansett Police K-9 officer and his police dog located the deceased body of Steven Fregeolle in the preserve at around 6:30 pm today.

An arrest warrant had been issued earlier today for Fregeolle, 32, of Johnston, RI. The warrant charged him with murder in connection to the Saturday evening fatal shooting of Brandi Berg, 37, of Riverside, RI.

The suspect’s abandoned vehicle was located this morning by police in Charlestown, RI, in the area of the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve. Police had been searching the preserve and other locations in the region for F​regeolle for much of the day.

Fregeolle was the sole suspect in the North Attleboro homicide.

North Attleboro Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to this office and homicide unit prosecutors continue to actively investigate the homicide, which occurred last night in the parking lot of the Fashion Crossing Plaza on Route 1 in North Attleboro.

At around 6 pm on Saturday, North Attleboro Police responded to a reported shooting in the parking lot at the shopping plaza. When first responders arrived, they quickly located the victim, who was non-responsive and injured from apparent gunshot wounds she sustained while inside her vehicle.

The victim was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where she was pronounced deceased.

As the investigation is active and ongoing at this time, no further information can be released at this time.




Search underway for suspect in Saturday night’s homicide in North Attleboro

Investigators have identified a suspect in last night’s fatal shooting of a 37-year-old Rhode Island woman at the Fashion Crossing Plaza in North Attleboro, and are actively seeking the public’s assistance in locating him, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

An arrest warrant was issued earlier today for Steven Fregeolle, 32, of Johnston, RI. The warrant charges the suspect with murder.

The suspect’s abandoned vehicle was located this morning by police in Charlestown, RI, in the area of the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve. The suspect also has known connections to Johnston, RI and Exeter, RI.

If anyone has any information about the suspect, his whereabouts​ or the case, they are urged to contact North Attleboro Police Sergeant Richard McQuade at 508-695-1212.

• Deliver individually packaged orders to inmates at specified correctional facilities with the supervision of a correctional officer in a timely and efficient manner including but not limited to
• Positively identify the inmate
• Obtain signature of inmate on 2 ply order receipt
• Forward 2nd copy of order receipt back to inmate
• Note any and all discrepancies or damages on both copies of order receipt
• Retain signed copy of order receipt
• Retain and dispose of all plastic bags and trash generated in process
• Account for all signed receipts
• Responsible for sending required information and reports, including timesheets, to Regional Distribution Center.
• Maintain all KCN areas/equipment/products in a neat, clean, and orderly manner and maintain American Correctional Association & American Jail Association standards/guidelines when applicable.
• Attend orientation and training, annual on-site security classes and remain current in certifications as required by the Facility.
• Follow all the policies and procedures outlined in the KCN Best Business Practices Guide at all times.
• Complete miscellaneous duties assigned by KCN Commissary Manager.

Requirements:
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Overnight Associate – Cumberland Farms (Fairhaven)
$12 an hour – Part-time

As an overnight associate at Cumberland Farms, you will be responsible with maintaining the store by doing thorough cleaning, stocking/re-stocking and getting it ready for the morning.

Putting away warehouse/vendor deliveries, doing a deep clean of the coffee machines and area, thoroughly cleaning the floors and public bathrooms are some of the responsibilities.

We are currently seeking a Vegetation Groundperson to join our team.

Essential Functions
• Uses a chainsaw to cut brush, logs and stumps of larger trees.
• Gathers brush and feed brush into wood chipper.
• Applies chemical herbicide to right-of-way, following brush removal
• Utilizes hose and spray nozzle from truck mounted spray equipment which includes tank, pump, hose reel, 200 feet of ½ inch hose, or utilizes back-pack to treat remote areas.
• Services truck, chipper, and equipment, maintaining them in neat, clean, and specified mechanical order.
• Assists senior spray person in mixing herbicide in holding tank.
• Works around hazardous equipment.
