Massachusetts Public Health Officials Announce Confirmed Case of EEE in a Horse in Methuen

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) yesterday announced that laboratory testing has confirmed a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus infection in a horse from Methuen. This is the third horse case of EEE in Massachusetts this year. As a result, the risk level in Methuen has been raised to critical and Andover and Lawrence are now at high.

In total across Massachusetts, there are 24 communities now at critical risk, 24 at high risk, and 55 at moderate risk for the EEE virus. Here’s a map of the state’s current EEE risk levels:

Yesterday, DPH announced the fourth confirmed human case of EEE in Massachusetts this year, a woman over 50 from southern Bristol County. Based on the timing of the patient’s exposure, the elevated risk levels throughout Bristol and Plymouth counties, and the completion of the second aerial spraying in the region which concluded over the weekend, there are no risk level changes for communities in Bristol and Plymouth counties at this time.

DPH and the Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) were scheduled to begin aerial spraying in specific areas of Worcester and Middlesex counties Sunday, August 25. However, the ability to spray is weather-dependent and as a result of low evening temperatures, spraying did not occur last night but will begin as soon as weather permits.

“Although cooler weather will start to reduce mosquito populations, the season is not over yet,” said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. “We are urging people across the state to remember that the peak time for transmission of mosquito-borne illness extends through September here in Massachusetts.”

DPH is working with several state agencies including MDAR, local boards of health, local Mosquito Control Projects, and other mosquito control experts on mosquito surveillance and appropriate public health response activities.

All residents throughout the Commonwealth should continue to use mosquito repellent and those in high and critical risk communities should consider staying indoors during the dusk to dawn hours to reduce exposure to mosquitoes.

EEE is a rare but serious and potentially fatal disease that can affect people of all ages. EEE occurs sporadically in Massachusetts with the most recent outbreak years occurring from 2004-2006 and 2010-2012. There were 22 human cases of EEE infection during those two outbreak periods with 14 cases occurring among residents of Bristol and Plymouth counties.

EEE virus has been found in 334 mosquito samples this year, many of them from species of mosquitoes capable of spreading the virus to people.

People have an important role to play in protecting themselves and their loved ones from illnesses caused by mosquitoes:

Avoid Mosquito Bites

Apply Insect Repellent when Outdoors. Use a repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient (DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] or IR3535) according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning in areas of high risk.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

Drain Standing Water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by draining or discarding items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty unused flowerpots and wading pools and change the water in birdbaths frequently.

Install or Repair Screens. Keep mosquitoes outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

Protect Your Animals

Animal owners should reduce potential mosquito breeding sites on their property by eliminating standing water from containers such as buckets, tires, and wading pools – especially after heavy rains. Water troughs should be flushed out at least once a week during the summer months to reduce mosquitoes near paddock areas. Horse owners should keep horses in indoor stalls at night to reduce their risk of exposure to mosquitoes. Owners should also speak with their veterinarian about mosquito repellents approved for use in animals and vaccinations to prevent WNV and EEE. If an animal is suspected of having WNV or EEE, owners are required to report to DAR, Division of Animal Health by calling 617-626-1795 and to the Department of Public Health (DPH) by calling 617-983-6800.

Incoming UMass Dartmouth students blog about life experiences before heading to campus

In preparation for the beginning of their UMass Dartmouth journey, first-year students completed their first college writing assignment by participating in the This We Believe blog. Students were invited to post essays about their life experiences to share with their peers. This opportunity allowed new students to reflect on what they care about, what they can learn from one another, and join the conversation about student life at UMassD.

Students also had the opportunity to submit their essays to the This We Believe essay contest, managed by the Office of the Provost. This year’s winners were:

First place – “Becoming Who You Want to Be” by incoming nursing student Abigail Soares of Taunton, Mass. Soares wrote about losing her mother to addiction, raising her siblings while finishing high school, and how these experiences set her on a path to help people as a future medical professional. “I know I can’t change the past or my mother’s decisions, but I hope to change the lives of others who still have a future ahead of them,” wrote Soares.

Second place –“Control” by Zoe Diana Plante from Mansfield, Mass. Plante, who will be studying chemistry, discussed how exiting a controlling relationship allowed her to grow and find herself. “Falling in love with someone else is so much easier than falling in love with yourself. I am still trying to accept myself. To own my imperfections and flaws instead of trying to change my appearance for another person,” said Plante.

Third place – “Reminiscent” by Michelle Ciaramella from Raynham, Mass., who shared her story of accepting her new stepfamily and how their support changed her life and her concept of family. “Family has a different meaning to each person who hears the word. Family is not only blood, it is a bond,” wrote Ciaramella.

The This We Believe blog received more than 21,000 views and 900 comments from 27 countries.




Mayor Jon Mitchell to hold August Neighborhood Office Hours at Cafe Roma

Mayor Mitchell will hold neighborhood office hours for the month of August on Tuesday, August 27, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Cafe Roma, 3371 Acushnet Avenue.

Mayor Mitchell announced he would set aside time each month to hold office hours in city neighborhoods so that residents could meet with him outside of normal business hours and in their own neighborhood.

In his State of the City last year, the Mayor announced that a new format of office hours would be established, inviting residents to join him at local restaurants in different neighborhoods of the city. Food will be available at the office hours.

City residents are invited to attend the neighborhood office hours to meet with Mayor Mitchell directly and share their concerns and ideas, as well as a bite to eat. The sessions are open to all New Bedford residents, no advance appointments are required and meetings with the Mayor will be done on a first come, first served basis.




New Bedford RiseFest for the homeless set for September 1

New Bedford RiseFest 2019, a collection of local musical acts of all genres helping to raise money for New Bedford’s homeless, is scheduled for September 1st from 12 pm to 12 am at The Vault Music Hall & Pub at Greasy Luck at 791 Purchase St in New Bedford. This one-day, multi-media awareness telethon event will bring awareness, aid, and support to the New Bedford homeless population and the services that provide for and supplement them, primarily Rise Up For Homes.

Rise Up For Homes supplements the overage that the City of New Bedford does not and without them, people would die in the sub-zero degree conditions we’ve come to know and expect. Massachusetts State Police Community Action Team arrests man for Fentanyl trafficking in New Bedford

A traffic stop in New Bedford yesterday led to the arrest of a man for trafficking in fentanyl, among other charges.

At about 5:20 p.m., troopers assigned to the Troop D Community Action Team stopped a 2019 Nissan Altima for suspected illegal window tint. During their contact with the operator, the troopers observed a knife in plain view and subsequently determined that its size was in violation of a city ordinance.

The operator, ALEX BARBOZA, 29, of New Bedford, was placed under arrest for the city ordinance violation. A subsequent inventory of his vehicle prior to towing led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 10 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl, approximately one pound of a substance believed to be marijuana, 100 cartridges of CBD oil, and two small bottles of a substance believed to be anabolic steroids. Troopers also located and seized more than $26,000.00, which was located in the vehicle and on BARBOZA.

BARBOZA was booked at the State Police Barracks in North Dartmouth on the following charges:

• Municipal by-law or ordinance violation (knife)
• Trafficking in fentanyl
• Possession of a Class A substance with intent to distribute
• Possession of a Class C drug
• Possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug (2 counts)

BARBOZA was additionally cited for a window tint violation. He was transported to the Ash Street Jail in New Bedford pending his arraignment in New Bedford District Court on Monday.




New Bedford man charged with OUI after hitting Brooklawn Park wall

29-year old Marcos Araujo of New Bedford is being charged with OUI-liquor after hitting Brooklawn Park wall just before 1 am on Thursday.

According to New Bedford police, the responded to a call of an accident involving a single car hitting the wall at Brooklawn Park on Acushnet Ave. in New Bedford’s north end. Officers determined the driver was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. No other vehicles were damaged and the driver was uninjured.




58-year old woman drowns at Parkwood in Wareham on Thursday

On Thursday, August 22, at about 1:15 p.m. multiple Wareham emergency agencies responded to Parkwood in Wareham for the report of an unresponsive person on the beach. Civilians were performing CPR on a woman near the shoreline when first responders arrived. She was pulled further onto the beach where EMS personnel took over patient care. The victim was transported to Tobey Hospital and pronounced deceased a short time later.

A witness at the scene reported that the victim, a 58-year-old Randolph woman, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol before entering the water. After a while, she was observed motionless in the water and was brought to shore by citizens in the area. The incident remains under investigation however it appears nothing suspicious at this time.
