New Bedford police detective to shave head for kids with cancer

New Bedford Police Det. Claudia Sampson lost her hair during a battle with cancer in 2010.

She will lose her hair again June 4 – but this time willingly, happily and in support of young people fighting a battle she knows all too well.

Det. Sampson will have her hair shaved during Buzz Off for Kids with Cancer, to be held at Gillette Stadium. Participants have their hair shaved in solidarity with youngsters who lost their hair to cancer.

The event raises money to help children enjoy the usual childhood treats even as they experience an illness no child should face. Kids with cancer, after all, are still just kids.

Funds raised help with decorating a hospital room, providing art kits and crafts, putting on birthday parties and holiday celebrations and paying for hospital parking, among other things, all aimed at improving life for children fighting cancer and their families.

Since 2010, 4,890 heads have been shaved, with more than $5.7 million raised and more than 7,000 patients and families assisted.

Among the better-known participants is Rob Gronkowski, tight end for the New England Patriots, who shaves his head every year to support the event.

Det. Sampson, a 31-year veteran of the New Bedford Police Department, is a two-time cancer survivor.

She battled the disease in 2002 and again in 2010.

She also lost her mother and brother to the disease.

Det. Sampson remembers the difficult experience of having to visit her hairdresser to remove her hair after cancer caused it to thin and fall out. She also remembers the heartwarming and inspiring decision by many of her colleagues and friends to shave their own heads in solidarity.

“I know how important it is to know someone is behind you, supporting you and sending their strength and good wishes,’’ she said.

This is her fourth time at the Buzz Off event. Those registering are asked to raise at least $350. She raised about $1,500 last year.

“It’s a good time and a great way to raise money,’’ she said.

Prescription drug takeback day in New Bedford is Saturday, April 29

Residents are encouraged to bring unused, unwanted prescription medication for safe disposal during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, outside New Bedford Police headquarters at 871 Rockdale Ave.

The event, which is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

The medication will be transported off site and disposed of safely. Prescription medicine abuse can be a serious problem, so careful, responsible disposal of medication that is no longer needed helps keep the community safe.

The drug take-backs are held every six months.

New Bedford Police collected more than 205 pounds of prescription medications, their most enthusiastic response yet, at the most recent National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day in October.

Residents brought 205.4 pounds of prescription medication to police headquarters at 871 Rockdale Ave. during the collection.

Medications can also be dropped off year-round at the New Bedford Police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave., and the downtown police station, 572 Pleasant St.

Accepted items include prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples and veterinary medications.

Needles, syringes and lancets can be dropped off at three New Bedford locations: Greater New Bedford Community Health Center, 874 Purchase St., 508-992-6553; and two locations of Seven Hills Behavioral Health, 1173 Acushnet Ave., 508-996-0546; and 589 South First St., 508-996-3147. Call the locations for specific hours and additional information.

Sharps must be in a red biohazard container. New Bedford residents can pick up one free container at the health department, 1213 Purchase St., 508-999-2619.

For more information on National Prescription Drug Take-Back, call Det. Bryan Oliveira at (508) 991-6300, ext. 79534.

R & W Rope’s Family Oriented Annual Rope Fest Is Chock Full Of Demonstrations, Kid’s Activities, Mock Rescues, Food & Refreshments

Rope. Something we all take for granted. It’s ubiquitous throughout our lives, yet we barely notice unless we are undertaking some type of activity like sailing, rock climbing, or an arborist or if you are a member of the fire department, police department or in the military.

Without rope there’d be no hobby rock climbing, removal of trees, one wouldn’t be able to dock a boat, sail, rescue teams would be less effective, no tents for camping, no mountain climbing, construction, engineering, hammocks, clotheslines to dry clothes, no towing and many other things.

Vintage photos of rope manufacturing and supply companies in New Bedford are extant on just about any photo repository on the city. At one time they were dozens of them spread throughout the city. No rope, no whaling. No whaling, no whaling city! These companies have just about disappeared, but one that still exists is R&W Rope at 39 Tarkiln Place. The family owned and operated distributor of rope and cordage has been in New Bedford since 1985, and at their current location since 2005.

Started by the current owner, Rod McCollester as a “one man” operation out of the trunk of a hand-me-down car, they’ve grown into one of the most diverse stocking warehouses of rope, cordage, and related hardware in the industry. As a wholesale distributor of many of the world’s best ropes, R&W Rope offers wholesale pricing that easily beats “big box” marine and outdoors retailers. They also have the expertise focuses on custom designing solutions specific to a user’s needs. They can splice, swage, or fabricate a solution to almost any cordage or rigging problem.

But, don’t be fooled – while they work with some of the biggest commercial clients, they are just as happy to help an individual select the proper cord for a clothesline when they visit our shop. One of the areas that they are superlative with is their new expanded marine rigging capabilities. Whether your needs are marine, climbing, safety, crafting, architecture, outdoors, or utility – R&W Rope has the products, expertise, and discount pricing to make them a wise choice.

However, this article is about their association with the city they love so much, beyond their business: their annual Rope Fest which began as a huge warehouse sale a decade ago. However, over the years it’s evolved into something much more and is chock full of activities, instructional demos, safety personnel demos from the Boston Fire Department doing mock rescues, and arborists demonstrating their skills. You’ll see line splicing, knot tying that borders on magic, paracord crafting, and fitness experts having a lead contest called Battle Ropes. It’s a genuine festival atmosphere like any of the many festivals held in New Bedford.

The kid’s will have a blast on the climbing wall which is a great way to have fun and exercise for all ages. The lifesaving and rescue demonstrations by the Boston Fire Department trainers will appeal to everyone, and the kids will take great pride in the paracord crafts where they will learn how to make the cord and take it home to show their friends. There will be plenty of free food and refreshments to wet your whistle. If you are someone who loves a deal, R&W Rope will be offering 20%-40% off on EVERYTHING they sell.

R&W Rope is steeped in the community as is evident by their Rope Festival – something they certainly don’t have to do, but host because they live and work right here on the SouthCoast. This is their community. So, it goes without saying that there will be other “locals” involved in the popular festival like the Buzzards Bay Coalition, Community Boating Center of New Bedford, Schooner Ernestina, New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, New Bedford Coast Guard Auxilliary, Fids & Fibers Arborist Splicing Workshop, Puzzle & Craft Factory, Busy Bee Nauticals, Paige’s Paracord, Bete-Fleming, Low Tide Yacht Club, The Black Leash, Susan Villarreal, Beetle Cat, and Arborist Patrick Dolan.

So, if the idea of something different to do with the family interests you, then take everyone to R&W’s Rope Fest and have a blast. The kids will have so much fun that they won’t even realize that they are learning a lot. Who knows, it may pique a future hobby like rock climbing or sailing and perhaps even a career in nautical, rescue, or with the fire department.

No matter what you’ll spend a rewarding, fun-filled day with friends and family! Don’t forget Saturday, April 28th from 8:00am-4:00pm!

Here are highlights of the food, events, items and more from last year’s Rope Fest:

Our relationship is not at an all-time low with Russia

It’s mind boggling that President Trump and newspapers across the nation reported that America’s relationship with Russia is at an all-time low. It’s an absolutely absurd statement and while headlines like this may sell newspapers, they are more fiction than the truth. Fake news at its best.

Who am I to judge this statement as false? I was in the United States Air Force for 20 years and our relationship is nowhere near rock bottom with Russia. Five minutes of research would have pushed the story from the front page to page 20 of any legitimate news organization. But that doesn’t sell newspapers, does it?

Anyone who lived through the Cold War Era, or has read a few history books on the subject of America and Russia, would laugh at today’s media created crisis. Can anyone with a straight face say relations today are worse than the Cuban missile crisis – when we were the closest to nuclear war with Russia? Or worse than when the Berlin Airlift was going on at a time when the Russians tried to starve millions of Germans? Google Operation Vittles.

Are our relations worse today than when we fought a proxy war against them in Afghanistan? Worse than when Stalin basically ordered the North Koreans south to kick off the Korean War causing over 54,000 American causalities? Worse than the nuclear arms or space races? Worse than the Vietnam War?

Since the absurd headlines that America’s relationship is “at an all-time low with Russia” were printed last week, these same newspapers are now reporting every time a Russian aircraft flies into Alaskan airspace. And will the Russian hacking story ever go away? The media loves a crisis and they are attempting to scare the public into buying their fiction. I’ll also remind you this is the same media that told you that Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump are best friends and working together.

It’s irresponsible for President Trump to make that statement and just as irresponsible for the media to put the statement on the front page and now give the story legs. Anyone with half a brain and over 40 years old can give you a dozen examples when our relationship with Russia was far worse than today.

Woman assaults 72-year old man in Fall River for lottery ticket

From the Fall River Police department:

On 4-20-17 at approximately 8:30pm, a 72-year old male exited the Stop & Save Store located at 101 President Ave. carrying a scratch ticket he just purchased in the store. While walking to his car with the ticket he was approached by a female in the parking lot. The female asked him for money and he told her that he didn’t have any more money. At that time the female grabbed the lottery ticket from his hand and knocked him to the ground causing him to hit his head on the pavement.

He described the female as white, in her twenties, 5-1 to 5-3 tall, dark hair, small build, wearing a dark zip up hooded sweatshirt and jeans. If anyone knows the identity of the female please contact the Fall River Police Major Crimes Office or Det. John McDonald at 508-324-2796.

Exercise Tiger Memorial Service Fort Taber~Fort Rodman Park

The annual Exercise Tiger memorial service will be held Sunday, April 23 at 1:00PM on the grounds of Fort Taber Fort Rodman Park located at 1000C South Rodney French Boulevard in New Bedford. The service is being organized by the City of New Bedford and the New Bedford Veterans’ Advisory Board.

Brigadier General Francis B. McGurn II, Assistant Adjutant General Massachusetts National Guard will be the keynote speaker at this year’s service. The color guard and firing detail will be handled by reenactors from the British Red Devils Paratroops and them 26th “Yankee Division.” Guest of honor is Mr. Vincent Ricciardi, a survivor and veteran of Exercise Tiger.

The Exercise Tiger monument located at Fort Taber Fort Rodman Park was a result of the late Joseph Theodore, Jr.’s concept to create a “mirror “memorial in the United States to commemorate the lives of 749 American servicemen lost in action off of Slapton Sands in southern England during the April 28, 1944 exercises preparing for the invasion of Normandy. New Bedford resident John J. Bettencourt was one of the servicemen lost in this action.

At 0200 hours on April 28, 1944, a flotilla of eight landing ships (LST’s) proceeded towards the beach a Slapton Sands, England. The LST’s were transporting engineers and quartermaster troops along with equipment to provide support for troops of the US 4th Infantry Division assault group which had landed earlier. Out of the darkness came nine German E-boats, high powered torpedo firing boats that had previous picked up the existence of this unprotected convoy. Three LSTs were struck in the attack. In all, 198 sailors and 551 soldiers, a total of 749 were lost. Because of the secrecy involving all of the D-Day preparations no one was allowed to divulge the incident at Slapton Sands. With the subsequent events of D-Day and the race across France into Germany, the incident was largely forgotten until 1971 when Kenneth Small and Englishmen discovered and uncovered evidence of the tragedy conceptualized a suitable memorial in England using a recovered M4 Sherman tank as the centerpiece of a memorial. Mr. Small wrote “The Forgotten Dead” detailing the events of Exercise Tiger.

The memorial here in New Bedford consists of 749 stars one for each serviceman lost, a life preserver with the numbers of the eight LSTs, the 4 th US Infantry Division patch and a memorial panel that provides historical information on Exercise Tiger.

For further information please contact Bob Bromley at 774-357- 9591 or Chris Gomes at 508-991- 6186.
