Narcotics Detectives, under the direction of Captain Brian Keenan executed a search warrant at 162 Gresham Street in Springfield around 4:30pm, making two arrests, seizing more than 23,000 bags of heroin and recovering close to $13,000 in cash as well as marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.

“This was a large scale heroin distribution operation responsible for bringing thousands of bags of heroin into the Springfield area,” said Springfield Police Narcotics Captain Brian Keenan.

“Our Strategic Impact Unit continues to arrest illicit narcotics dealers. Today’s arrests and the removal of more than 23,000 bags of heroin undoubtedly saved lives and make our city and region safer,” said Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri.

Santiago and Torres are scheduled to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Thursday.

Faces Of New Bedford #133: Justine Santos

Meet Justine Santos, 36-year-old Assistant Principal at Congdon Elementary School. Justine was born and raised in New Bedford and after graduating high school, she went on to further her education at Temple University. She eventually transferred to UMass Dartmouth to be closer to home, where she finished her degree in english.

She immediately went back for her Master’s in education and began teaching English to students at Normandin Middle School in grades six through eight. During her time at Normandin, she became passionate about her job and pouring into each and every one of her students. The principal of Normandin, Stephen Farrell asked her to intern in the aspiring administrator/apprentice program, as she was in the doctorate program at UMass and he saw her drive and care for her students.

This program allowed for her to secure her admin license and be eligible for the position of Assistant Principal at Congdon elementary school. In this new position, she was able to take the passion she had not only for her students, but the city as a whole. Being the granddaughter of activist Ben Rose Sr., she’s always felt a calling on her life to do more for the city

Attleboro Child Rapist Sentenced to Two Decades in Prison

A 36-year-old Attleboro man who was convicted of a litany charges related to the rape of a young family member after a three week trial in Fall River Superior Court earlier this Autumn, was sentenced to serve 18 to 20 years in state prison yesterday afternoon, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Robert Brien was convicted by a jury of his peers after five hours of jury deliberation in late November. He was specifically convicted of two counts of rape of a child-aggravated by age, two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person under 14, possession of child pornography and incest.

The trial was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Casey Smith and Second Assistant District Attorney Silvia Rudman.

On July 20, 2012 Detective Arthur Brillon of the Attleboro Police Department responded to Sturdy Memorial Hospital regarding the report of a child who had disclosed sexual abuse. Upon arrival he met with the mother of a six year old girl who reported that earlier in the day when she dropped the child off at her grandmother’s house, the grandmother reported that Katelynn had made some concerning statements that led her to believe the girl had been sexually assaulted by the defendant on numerous occasions.

During subsequent interviews with the victim, she revealed numerous occasions of rape. When interviewed by police, the defendant also made several admissions about masturbating in front of the child, watching pornography with the child and performing various sex acts on the child.

In addition to the lengthy state prison sentence, Judge Sharon E. Donatelle also placed the defendant on five years of supervised probation to commence upon his release from prison. The conditions of probation include registering as a sex offender and the completion of sex offender counseling. The defendant cannot reside in a home with any children, can have no unsupervised contact with children, cannot accept a job that puts him in contact with children, cannot perform any volunteer activities that may put him in contact with a child and cannot date or enter into any relationship with the parent of a minor child without first getting written permission to do so from the probation department. The defendant must also wear a GPS monitoring device during the entire duration of his post-release probationary term.

‘’I want to thank the jury for convicting the defendant of the repeated sexual assaults on an innocent six year old child. He violated the child’s trust and any sense of security she had by engaging in this very despicable and lurid conduct,’’ District Attorney Quinn said. ‘’I want to thank the victim for her perseverance while the case was pending in court. I hope and pray that she can move on with her life. The lengthy state prison sentence imposed by the court was well-deserved.’’

Cabezuedo has a lengthy criminal history involving narcotics. He was found guilty in 2010 of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute within a school zone and was sentenced to serve two years in prison.

He was also found guilty in 2009 of distribution of a class B substance with intent to distribute and was sentenced to serve one year in prison. In 2003, he was sentenced to serve two years in prison for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

New Bedford Police receive grant to promote “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over” life-saving initiative

New Bedford Police will join local police departments across the state and the State Police in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over (DSOGPO) and enforcement mobilization and public information campaign.

The New Bedford Police Department was awarded a special grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) to increase the number of impaired driving patrols during the holiday season.

“Drivers impaired by any drug, including marijuana or alcohol, are a major threat to the safety of our roads,” said New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro. “Our officers will be stopping any motorist who is exhibiting signs of impairment, or driving in a dangerous manner.”

The DSOGPO educational component of the campaign will stress the responsibility drivers have to other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to stay off the road if impaired by any substance.

“We needlessly lost 119 people to impaired driving last year in Massachusetts,” said Jeff Larason, Director of the EOPSS Highway Safety Division. “As part of this year’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign we are asking drivers to acknowledge the responsibility they have to their passengers, other motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists on the road with them, to drive without impairment of any kind,” said Larason. “Plan ahead before you celebrate this holiday season and designate a sober driver, use a ride sharing service, or stay where you are – whatever it takes to avoid getting behind the wheel.”

Massachusetts and National Data:

– From 2015 to 2016, alcohol impaired driving fatalities in MA increased 9 percent (from 109 to 119).
– On average, 800 people have been killed nationally in December crashes involving drivers with BACs over the legal limit since 2012
– Marijuana or marijuana-type drugs were the most prevalent types of drugs found in drivers killed in crashes in MA from 2011 to 2015.
– Drivers using marijuana demonstrated decreased car handling performance, increased reaction times, impaired time and distance estimation, sleepiness and decreased motor skill coordination (NHTSA).
– Mixing alcohol and marijuana may dramatically produce effects greater than either drug on its own (NHTSA).

City officials to mark first New Bedford to Florida commercial flight by Elite Airways at New Bedford Regional Airport

Mayor Jon Mitchell and city officials will join staff and commissioners of New Bedford Regional Airport to mark the first commercial plane flight from New Bedford to Vero Beach, Florida, by Elite Airways.

Officials will gather at the airport, 1569 Airport Road, at 9 a.m., prior to the flight’s departure from New Bedford.

Earlier this year, New Bedford Regional Airport passed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspection and received certification to support service to a greater range of potential destinations. The certification, known as a “139 certification,” enables carriers to fly certain aircraft with more than the nine seats currently allowed, which makes new routes commercially viable for the first time.

The new designation allows New Bedford Regional Airport to support flights to various destinations across the United States. Of the more than 200 airports in New England, New Bedford joins just 22 others to hold 139 certification. New Bedford Regional Airport previously held 139 certification but it lapsed in the 1990s.
