PODCAST: Mayor Mitchell responds to the “spiked” cobblestones story

Three New Bedford City Councilors have sent a strongly worded letter to Mayor Jon Mitchell regarding the “dangerous and malicious placement of spiked cobblestones median at the entry of our City is wrong.”

26th annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive: help us Stamp Out Hunger!

Join the fight against hunger in Greater New Bedford by simply walking to your mailbox on Saturday, May 12th! Join the National Association of Letter Carriers SE MA Merged Branch 18, the US Postal Service and United Way of Greater New Bedford for the 26th annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive and help us Stamp Out Hunger!

“Stamp Out Hunger is the largest One-day food drive, and United Way is proud to be an active participant,” said Victoria Grasela, Director of Marketing & Community Relations United Way of Greater New Bedford. “Each year the food collected through Stamp Out Hunger helps to stock the shelves of local food pantries for weeks.”

To participate in Stamp Out Hunger, leave a non-perishable food item or bag of items (every little bit helps!) by your mailbox or on your porch. Food will be collected by your letter carrier during your normal mail delivery. Non-perishable food may include: cereals, beans, rice, canned meats, tuna, soups, vegetables, peanut butter, jellies or jams, pasta, tomato sauces, pancake mix or juices. For safety reasons, we ask that no glass containers be donated to avoid breakage and that food has not expired.

Food collected by letter carriers throughout the day will be brought to local post offices where it is sorted and packed for food pantries to take back to stock their shelves. Pantries benefiting from Stamp Out Hunger locally include Catholic Social Services, The Family Pantry- Damien’s Place, M.O. Life Food Pantry, PACE, The Salvation Army, and Shepherd’s Pantry.

Since the beginning of the drive, nearly 1.3 billion pounds of food has been collected, 70 million pounds of that collected locally! Each year the drive collects between 40,000- 70,000 pounds of food for local pantries.

Through its Hunger Commission Network and partnership with the local postal workers union, United Way serves as a local convener for this effort.

Anyone interested in volunteering to assist letter carriers in collecting the food on their routes throughout Greater New Bedford during the course of the day may arrange to do so by calling Richard Drolet at 508-801-2881 by Thursday evening, May 10th.

Be sure to join us Saturday, May 12th, and leave a non-perishable item or bag of items by your mailbox or on your porch and help us Stamp Out Hunger in Greater New Bedford!

Faces Of New Bedford #153: Abrah Zion

Meet Abrah Zion, 42-year-old Photographer, and owner of Miss Z Photography.

Abrah has always been into photography, stealing her parent’s polaroid and film cameras as a kid, taking photos of anything she could. With both of her parents as teachers, she knew she wouldn’t be able to go to college for photography and majored in Near Eastern and Judaic studies at Brandeis University, but kept on photographing with her friends.

After graduation, her career path took a detour and she got into computing, working for several companies before settling at Coastline Elderly in New Bedford, servicing their computers and phone systems. After the birth of her first daughter, during her maternity leave, she turned her passion toward her brand new child and became obsessed with photographing her.

This obsession turned into her photographing friend’s kids and before she knew it, she didn’t return to her position at Coastline and had started her own photography business. Since opening, she has been able to make a name for herself in the SouthCoast and beyond by being published in the international magazine, “Taopan – The Art of Pregnancy and Newborn”, as well as the national magazine “Beauty and Lifestyle Mommy Magazine”. She has also won awards such as #1 Photographer in Best of the SouthCoast 2017 awards, 3 years in a row as Parent’s Choice Award from the Motherhood Society and has been listed as one of the top 10 maternity photographers in Massachusetts by PhotographyMagazine.com in 2016.

She is also working to become an accredited safety expert by the APNPI, The Accredited Professional Newborn Photographer. Abrah also volunteers for the organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep as well as donating sessions to families who couldn’t otherwise afford the sessions.

Shakespeare in Buttonwood to return, announces auditions for Macbeth

Shakespeare in Buttonwood Park, New Bedford’s free Shakespeare event, is holding open auditions for its second summer. The announcement of Macbeth follows the event’s successful launch last summer with a performance of Romeo & Juliet. Shakespeare in Buttonwood marks the second collaboration between the City of New Bedford including the New Bedford Free Public Library, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Beaches, and Mayor’s Office, and local fringe theater company, The Glass Horse Project.

Macbeth tells the story of a young general who, by the prophecy of three witches, sets out to become the King of Scotland. “You always want to produce something relevant,” Founding Artistic Director of Glass Horse Project Korey Pimental says. “I think it’s is a story about how far we’ll go to fulfill our desires, which is always an interesting thing to explore and dig deeper into.”

Last summer’s adaptation and production of Romeo & Juliet brought New Bedford to a post-apocalyptic matriarchal society where class and gender lines divided the two lovers. This year, Shakespeare in Buttonwood takes the city audience to the highlands of Scotland for a more “traditional” production of the Bard’s tragedy.

Alyssa Steen, who audiences may remember as scene-stealing Mercutio from last year’s production, trades jumping out of a trash can for the director’s seat in this year’s production.

“Macbeth is a very dark show from start to finish,” Steen said as she glanced up from editing the script for this year’s production. “From start to finish we have war, betrayal, and political chaos. The thing about it though, is that the audience can view those themes through an objective lens while still having them be relatable. There’s a magnetic pull to the difficult things in life we try to understand. Theatre helps us make that connection, and I’m beyond thrilled to help bring it to life.”

“My favorite thing about theater as a craft and an entity is the communal aspect of it. Everyone coming together, putting their trust in each other, and working together to create magic,” remarks Pimental. Last year’s launch included a one-day showing of Romeo & Juliet and 140 people attended the production. “Last year, we did the show with nine actors. I’m hoping to see friendly returning faces and a bunch of new ones coming to try something they may have never thought to try before. Shakespeare in the Park, as an entity, is about community and working together to create some magic, so I’m excited to see where this year will take both the production and the event.” he adds.

Open auditions for Shakespeare in Buttonwood’s production of Macbeth will be held on Saturday, May 19 at The New Bedford Free Public Library on 613 Pleasant St in New Bedford. Everyone is welcome to audition. General auditions are 11 am to 3 pm and as needed callbacks are from 4-5pm on the same night; please come prepared with a Shakespearean monologue, not exceeding one minute in length. Although it is preferred the monologue is memorized, it is not necessary. The performances will be in the middle of August, with an exact date to be announced. The date will be provided during auditions to prospective actors. Rehearsals will be every Saturday from 1 to 5 at the New Bedford Free Public Library. Please send any questions to theglasshorseproject@gmail.com, or find The Glass Horse Project on Facebook.

New Bedford police drug take-back day collects 376 pounds

New Bedford Police collected 376.8 pounds of unwanted and expired prescription medications during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday, April 28, exceeding the amount gathered at the most recent event by more than 20 pounds.

Residents were encouraged to drop off unwanted and expired prescription medications during the event, which is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration and held at police departments nationwide.

Drug Take-Back Day allows the public to bring their medications for safe disposal. The events are held April and October of each year.

Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications. This ensures that the medications do not end up in the wrong hands or in the ecosystem.

The day’s activities are organized by detectives Kelly Almeida and Bryan Oliveira.

Medications can also be dropped off year-round at the New Bedford Police headquarters, 871 Rockdale Ave., the downtown police station, 572 Pleasant St., the north end station, 781 Ashley Blvd., and the south end station, 168 Cove St.

Accepted items include prescription patches, prescription medications, prescription ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples and veterinary medications.

Needles, syringes, and lancets can be dropped off at three New Bedford locations: Greater New Bedford Community Health Center, 874 Purchase St., 508-992-6553; and two locations of Seven Hills Behavioral Health, 1173 Acushnet Ave., 508-996-0546; and 589 South First St., 508-996-3147.
