Police arrest New Bedford Captain with extra 150-pounds of scallops, Oxycontin

On Wednesday, October 10, a Massachusetts Environmental Police Officer conducted a commercial permit inspection aboard a scallop vessel in New Bedford. The vessel was found to be permitted federally but did not possess a valid commercial permit to land scallops in Massachusetts.

The Officer then requested the Captain display his catch of scallops to ensure compliance of the federally permitted possession limits. The Captain presented the Officer with the vessel’s allowable catch of 600-pounds; however, further inspection of the vessel located an additional 150-pounds of scallops concealed within a beverage cooler.

The catch was seized and the vessel Captain was subsequently arrested for failure to display fish/catch upon demand. During the arrest process he was also found to be in possession of Oxycontin without a prescription.

New Bedford police warn of people breaking into unlocked cars

From the New Bedford Police Department’s Facebook page:

“We have received reports of several auto breaks in the last few days, with items stolen, and in all cases, the doors were UNLOCKED. Please everyone: Lock your car doors! Car theft is generally a crime of opportunity and many thieves check door handles and move on if the vehicle is locked. So lock out those thieves! It’s just a click of the remote.”

New Bedford Symphony Orchestra Establishes Furtado Family Scholarship

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the creation of the Furtado Family Scholarship.

For nearly sixty years, members of the Furtado family have made music with the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. During that time, their talent and passion for music have made a major contribution to the growth and impact of the NBSO in the community. Moreover, as teachers they have shared that talent and passion with countless students throughout the South Coast, enriching the lives of those students and our community as a whole.

In recent years, four members of the family—Judith Stoltenberg, Teresa Ouellette, Susan Bouley, and Marilyn Melanson—played in the orchestra. Upon the completion of the 2017-18 season, they informed the NBSO that it was time to bring this amazing musical run to a close and retire from the orchestra.

But a musical legacy like that of the Furtado family can never really “retire.” To recognize this and to thank the Furtado family for all it has done for the NBSO and the music community of the South Coast, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is very pleased to announce that it has established the Furtado Family Scholarship. This scholarship, which will provide financial aid to students in the NBSO’s youth orchestra programs, will be just one of the many ways that the Furtado family’s legacy of making music and bringing the joy of music to others will always be a part of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra and the South Coast community.

Donations to the scholarship fund can be made by check payable to the “NBSO” with memo indicating “Furtado Family Scholarship.” Donations can also be made at www.nbsymphony.org. For more information, please contact the NBSO office at (508) 999-6276.

The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra is a professional orchestra that annually presents a concert series of classical and pops music with internationally acclaimed guest artists, as well as an outstanding chamber music series. In addition, the NBSO’s innovative and nationally recognized educational programs reach 25,000 students each year. The NBSO is dedicated to building a community of music in the South Coast. James DeMello donates $1 million to Southcoast Health for cardiac catheterization suite

Business leader and philanthropist James DeMello donated $1 million to Southcoast Health for advanced cardiac care at Charlton Memorial Hospital, where the cardiac catheterization suite has been named for his parents.

The George F. and Erma Linda R. DeMello Cardiac Catheterization Suite offers the latest technology for diagnosing and treating cardiac artery blockages, as well as evaluating the functioning of the heart, heart valves and the major blood vessels.

“We are incredibly grateful to Jim DeMello for his generous support of Southcoast Health and our mission to deliver the latest and best in cardiac care to the patients of this region,” said Keith Hovan, president and CEO of Southcoast Health. “We also are proud of the faith that this visionary entrepreneur has shown in Southcoast Health.”

DeMello, who retired in 2000 as President and CEO of the Acushnet Rubber Company, is owner of the the DeMello International Center, in New Bedford. He also is trustee of the DeMello Charitable Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting regional economic development, education and healthcare in the South Coast region.

A long-time supporter of Southcoast Health, he became interested in the range of cardiac care offered at Charlton Memorial after his daughter Cheri developed a heart problem. DeMello said he was impressed with the highly skilled physicians and dedicated staff of the catheterization lab. And as a trained chemical engineer with a love for technology, he also was intrigued by the high-tech imaging equipment and surgical tools that enable cardiology specialists to perform sophisticated, minimally-invasive interventions. By using incisions that are far smaller than with open surgery, minimally invasive procedures allow for faster healing, with a lower risk of infection and other complications.

“Southcoast Health offers care that is as good as you can get anywhere,” DeMello said. “With their technology and the quality of their staff, they are bringing great care that is grounded in the community. There is no advantage to go anywhere else.”

In the cardiac catheterization suite, doctors thread a small tube through a patient’s arteries to diagnose a narrowing or blockage in the vessels that bring blood to the heart muscle. Heart attacks are caused by blockages of those arteries, which can be opened with stents or angioplasty, also delivered with the catheters. The latest in imaging equipment enables physicians to perform the procedure aided by a high-resolution view of the patient’s cardiac arteries.

Southcoast Health performs more cardiac catheterizations than any other community hospital system in the state, with more than 2,000 patients receiving this treatment each year.

“We have to take a regional view about what benefits the entire South Coast,” said DeMello. “That’s what Southcoast Health does.”

Southcoast Health is raising $25 million through its Campaign for Southcoast Health to support the recently renovated Stoico/FIRSTFED Maternity Center at St. Luke’s Hospital and an expansion of the emergency department at Tobey Hospital, in addition to the cardiac services provided at Charlton Memorial Hospital, which is the home of the Virginia and Harold Lash Heart and Vascular Center.

New Bedford High School leads state in AP Capstone Certificate Awardees

New Bedford High School took the lion’s share of Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Certificates awarded in Massachusetts by the College Board for 2018. The next nearest number of AP Certificates awarded to a Massachusetts high school was nine certificates.

In order to earn the AP certificates NBHS students had to complete a two-year course, AP Seminar in the first year and AP Research in the second year. Students had to achieve qualifying scores in AP Seminar in order to continue to AP Research, where they worked with AP-trained teachers and advisors to explore academic topics and problems of their own interest, designing and planning their course of study in the same way as college students do. AP Research “culminates in an academic paper of 4,000-5,000 words and a presentation, with an oral defense… from a panel of evaluators,” according to the College Board.

Mayor Jon Mitchell, chair of the School Committee, commended students, their families and staff on earning the distinction. “This impressive achievement of our students garnering nearly 40 percent of all Capstone Certificates in Massachusetts continues to demonstrate the opportunities that only New Bedford High School offers. The accomplishment of students and staff further sets New Bedford High apart as a school where all students can reach their fullest potential, exceptionally prepared for success in college and the workforce after graduation.”

“We are so proud of our AP Capstone Certificate awardees,” said Headmaster Bernadette Coelho, who brought the AP Capstone Program to NBHS. “Because these students have passed and earned qualifying scores in AP Seminar and AP Research, they have earned this noteworthy certificate. Those who elect to take four additional AP courses and receive qualifying scores will earn the coveted AP Capstone Diploma, which is highly sought by college recruiters. Students may also earn college credit and tuition savings,” she noted, adding that “New Bedford High School currently offers 20 AP courses, more than any other high school in the region – it’s one of the many resources that we offer our students, as only a fully comprehensive high school can.”

Superintendent Thomas Anderson lauded students and staff on being the leading recipient of AP Certificates in the state by the College Board. “We are delighted to congratulate New Bedford High School on this exceptional accomplishment. NBHS has been in the AP Capstone program for two short years and it now leads the state in certificates awarded – a testament to our outstanding students and our highly knowledgeable and effective teachers,” he said.

Trevor Packer, College Board senior vice president of AP and Instruction offered congratulations to all AP Capstone awardees, noting “Their ability to manage long-term projects, collaborate with teams, and deliver effective presentations will accelerate not only their academic careers, but their professional careers as well.”

About the Advanced Placement (AP) Program

The College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program gives students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school. A 3 or higher on an AP Exam has multiple benefits for students, including earning college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on AP Exams, saving them time and money. Research shows AP students are better prepared for and more likely to enroll and remain in college, do well in classes, and earn their degrees on time. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP Exams align their high standards.
