Massachusetts State Police investigating fatal crash in Holyoke

A crash on Route 91 at the interchange with Route 90 in Holyoke last night resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Ryan Czepiel indicates that at about 7:20 p.m. yesterday, Miguel Soto-Torres, a 38-year-old Holyoke man was traveling on the Interchange 4 from Route 90 to Route 91 Northbound in a 2006 Toyota Scion when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle traveled off the left side of the exit. After leaving the roadway the Toyota rolled a number of times and into the tree line. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor.

As a result of that collision, the operator and sole occupant of the Toyota, Miguel Soto-Torres, was determined to be deceased at the scene.

This crash remains under investigation by Troop B with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and Crime Scene Services Section.

State Police were assisted on scene by West Springfield Fire and EMS.

Taunton Man Convicted of Manslaughter; Sentenced to Serve Nearly Two Decades in Prison

A 22-year-old Taunton man who, in June of 2015, shot and killed Marques McCassie during a shootout with the victim at a Weir Street cookout, pleaded guilty this afternoon in Fall River Superior Court to four felony charges and was sentenced to serve up to 18-and-a-half-years in state prison.

Lorenze DaVeiga pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of assault and battery by discharge of a firearm.

On the afternoon of June 27, 2015, the defendant arrived at a cookout being held at the home of the McCassie’s cousin. At some point after his entry into the yard, the defendant was accused of firing a shot at McCassie, striking him in the flank. Another shot struck McCassie’s second cousin in the knee. At that point, another of McCassie’s relatives wrestled the defendant to the ground. While on the ground, the defendant was able to fire another shot, which struck McCassie in the thigh.

Evidence also showed that McCassie was also armed with a gun and fired at the defendant, striking him at least four times. Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the defendant was able to flee from the scene before seeking assistance from a bystander on Somerset Avenue. The defendant was then rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he underwent a life-saving emergency surgery.

In the meantime, the victim was driven to Morton Hospital in Taunton, where he later died from the gunshot wounds.

The case was prosecuted by Co-First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg and Assistant District Attorney Keith Paquette. The 13-and-a-half-year to 18-and-a-half-year state prison term was imposed by Judge Renee Dupuis. Judge Dupuis also placed the defendant on probation for an additional two years, which will commence upon his release from prison.

“This was another senseless act of violence that continues to plague our communities,” Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III said. “There is no rational basis for this behavior, which ruins many lives.”

Five pedestrians injured, one killed in Revere accident

At about 5:00 p.m., Sunday evening Troopers from the State Police-Revere Barracks responded to a crash on Route 145 near the intersection with North Shore Road. The crash involves multiple pedestrian victims, to include two adult female and three children. Tragically, one child is deceased at the scene.

1. A 27-year-old woman, treated at MGH for minor injuries;
2. A 5-year-old girl, determined to be deceased at the scene;
3. A 2-month-old girl, currently at MGH with life-threatening injuries.
4. Another adult female (I do not have age or current status), suffered non-life-threatening injuries; and
5. A 2-year-old child (do not have gender yet), suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation suggests the operator of the vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Autumn L. Harris, 42, of Boston, for reasons still under investigation, veered off the roadway and onto the grass median strip where she struck the pedestrians as they stood on a sidewalk inside the median strip that divides both sides of Route 145. The resulting impact projected the victims and scattered debris throughout the grass median.

The female operator was placed under arrest and brought to the State Police-Revere Barracks. The investigation is ongoing to determine scope of charges. We are responding with a drug recognition expert to the barracks to assess the operator for potential impairment by narcotics.

The investigation is being conducted by State Police Troop A, State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Revere Fire and Revere Police also assisted along with ambulance crews. We will release more info when available.
