New Bedford Fire Department fire alarm activation at Titleist

“At 3:41am this morning, Communications received an automatic fire alarm activation for Titleist located at 256 Samuel Barnett Blvd.

Command Unit 1 was notified en route of a fire in a large piece of machinery. Upon arrival there was visible smoke emitting from a rooftop vent. Engine 5 confirmed a fire in a hopper style machine, stretched hoselines, and with the assistance of Ladder 4 extinguished the fire with no extension.

The remaining crews of Engine 7, Engine 9, and Ladder 4 conducted exterior operations which included securing a water supply, manning the fire department connection (FDC), and rooftop operations. Dartmouth Fire District 3 responded as this portion of the Industrial Park is located in Dartmouth and both agencies share in protecting these facilities. The cause of the fire was accidental and was investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and Dartmouth Fire District 3. There were no civilian or Fire Department injuries.

This was the second occurrence in three days where a properly functioning automatic fire alarm system notified the Fire Department of a fire an industrial occupancy. We often stress the importance of properly functioning alarm systems in residential settings, but they are equally important in business/manufacturing occupancies as early notification allows for safe evacuation of employees, minimizes property damage, and prevents interruption or shutting down of business.”-New Bedford Fire Department.

OPINION: “The Fairhaven/NewBedford bridge ignores its own schedule!”

EDITOR: The bridge has never abided by the schedule in the decades I’ve lived here. It simply is what it is. I don’t mind because those guys are busting butt and what to come home after a long trip or want to head out to put food on the table. I never use the bridge if I have a rigid deadline.

Having said that, I can understand someone who looks at the schedule so they decide to go over the bridge based on that. However, they get there and the bridge is close off-schedule. Now they have to go around with the dozens of other people going around and that alternate route become clogged. Then they are late for work – which can get them in trouble – or late for a medical appointment, Zeiterion show, etc.

In addition, we have heard from several people that were/ar fishermen or know a bridge operator who said that there are a few captains who either offer the operator “shack” to open off-schedule, or even cuss, swear, and threaten the operator if he won’t open the bridge for them. The last time I heard something like that was 2-3 years ago, so I don’t know if the current operators do this or not.

Ultimately the bridge will be replaced with something modern, quicker, more efficiant and with fewer breakdowns. We just have to be patient.

One resident shares her frustration.

“I have a complaint about the #NewBedford/#Fairhaven bridge.

If the bridge is to open on the hour from 6am to 10am and half past the hour from 1115am to 615pm and then on-demand after that WHY is the bridge opening at 5:50am for boat traffic when it clearly states 6am on the website.

I’m sure a lot of motorists will feel the same way. Maybe someone doesn’t know how to tell time. This is absolutely aggravating in the morning to have to turn around and go back to Fairhaven to go the long way around.

Please explain to the MASSDot that they should follow the times stated on the website! This is not the first time that this had happened.”

She learns very quickly and will come running across the house if she hears the laser pointer being picked up. She is hand shy and will require acclimation time in her new home. I am very confident she will bond with people but it will take a lot of time, she moves away when you reach out to pet her but doesn’t run away. Very happy to be touched if you have churus or other delectable treats. She absolutely needs a kitty companion in her new home, she loves to snuggle. Willing to be touched if next to another confident cat.

Chippy (chipmunk): sweet, skittish, talkative, inquisitive. Chippy is a beautiful small cat who likes to spend her time grooming and wrestling her sister. She is very cat oriented and a little more hand shy than her sister. She likes to be around you and will sit on the couch next to you but prefers not to be touched until she really gets to know you.

40-year old Fall River man sentenced to prison for assault on elderly couple

“A 40-year-old Fall River man who assaulted an elderly couple at a city gas station last September was recently sentenced to serve jail time, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

Roderick Dixon pled guilty in Fall River District Court last week to charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon on a Person over the Age of 60 and Assault and Battery on a Person Over the Age of 60.

The defendant was sentenced by Judge David Sorrenti to two years in the Bristol County House of Corrections with nine months to serve. The balance of the jail sentence was suspended for two years, meaning if the defendant faces a new charge during this time, he would be liable to serve the remainder of the jail term.

On September 2, 2022 Fall River Police were dispatched to the New World Gas Station on Milliken Blvd. for a report of a fight. Two victims were on scene with injuries, but the defendant had left the scene. The female victim reported to police on scene that while her husband was arguing with a woman at the gas pumps, the defendant approached him and began hitting him in the head and continued to do so while he was on the ground.

The female victim attempted to get between the two to stop the altercation, but was pushed away by defendant, causing her to fall and injure her wrist. Both victims were transported to St. Anne’s Hospital. The male victim suffered a dislocated shoulder and the female victim had bones separated in her wrist.

Police observed surveillance video from the New World Gas station which showed the incident and showed that while the victim was on the ground and defenseless, the defendant walked over to him and punched him multiple times and stomped on him. At that point, the defendant walked away, but returned shortly thereafter to punch the male victim one final time.

During an interview with Fall River Police, the defendant corroborated being involved, stating he was coming to the defense of a young lady he alleged the male victim was yelling at, before the argument became physical. The defendant stated he “saw red” and kept punching the victim.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Zachary Ferris.

“This is another example of the senseless violence that occurs far too often in our society. I am pleased the defendant will be held accountable for his violent actions,” District Attorney Quinn said.”
