New Bedford’s six worst drug dealer infested streets

New Bedford Guide is building a database of all those charged in New Bedford with distributing/trafficking hard drugs like heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, crack, and other hard drugs. We will use the data to display where the drug dealers live, who the landlords are and then make the data available to the public. The goal is for landlords to be alerted to these arrests so they can act by removing the dealers from their property or not rent to them in the future.

Currently, we have all the arrests made from 1 January through 30 April of 2019 and some of the data imported for May. To date, the New Bedford police department made 75 distribution/trafficking arrests with 18 of them being fentanyl busts. Fentanyl was responsible for 89% of all the overdose deaths in Massachusetts in 2018.

Nearly one-third (29%) of those arrested for distribution/trafficking of hard drugs lived on six streets in New Bedford:

County Street – Five Drug Dealers

665 County Street New Bedford.

County Street topped the list where most of the drug dealers live in New Bedford with five. There were also two additional arrests on County Street, but the dealers lived in a different part of the city. While County Street is one of the longest streets in New Bedford, all of those arrested for dealing lived north of Sycamore Street.

The people arrested for dealing live at 625, 665, 840, 874, and 1107 County Street. All of those arrested are being charged with heroin and/or fentanyl distribution charges.

Acushnet Ave and Ashley Street – Four Drug Dealers

280 Acushnet Ave New Bedford.

Acushnet Ave and Ashley Street each provide sanctuary to four people arrested for dealing/trafficking hard drugs. The people arrested for dealing live at 280, 1529 (two roommates) and 1305 Acushnet Ave. Charges include cocaine, crack, and Class E drug distribution.

The people arrested for dealing on Ashley Street live at 37 (three roommates) and 50 Ashley Street. Charges include opioid/cocaine or Class E drug distribution.

Chestnut, Division and North Front streets – Three Drug Dealers

Chestnut Street, Division Street, and North Front Streets each provide sanctuary to three people arrested for dealing/trafficking hard drugs. The people arrested for dealing live at 27 and 96 (two roommates) Chestnut Street. Charges include heroin distribution or fentanyl trafficking.

195 Division Street in New Bedford.

The people arrested for dealing on Division Street live at 43 (two roommates) and 195 Division Street. Charges include Class E drug or fentanyl distribution.

315 North Front Street in New Bedford.

The people arrested for dealing on North Front Street live at 49, 259 and 315 North Front Street. Charges include Class A Drug, Class B Drug, and crack, distribution. Class A drug charges usually mean heroin and Class B drugs usually mean fentanyl.

The database of names will be made available later this month.

Massachusetts “Most Wanted Fugitive” who was sought in Shooting captured in North Carolina

A fugitive wanted for shooting a woman in Springfield earlier this year was captured this afternoon in North Carolina after an investigating by Massachusetts State Police, Springfield Police, and US Marshals tracked the suspect to that state.

ALECZANDER LIRIANO, 21, who last week was added to the Massachusetts State Police Most Wanted list, was arrested by a United States Marshals Task Force outside a residence in Wilmington, North Carolina at approximately 12:45 p.m.

In recent days, MSP Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section Trooper Nelson Zayas and Springfield Police Officer Christopher Bates (a member of a regional US Marshals Task Force), developed information that LIRIANO could be at the North Carolina address. The Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (MSP VFAS) sent the lead to the Marshals Task Force in North Carolina, and the arrest was made shortly thereafter.

Task Force officers placed LIRIANO in custody without incident. He is being held pending rendition to Massachusetts, where he will be prosecuted by the Hamden District Attorney.

LIRIANO is wanted for the March 5 late-morning shooting of a woman at the intersection of Dickinson Street and Lansing Place in Springfield. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, but survived.

Subsequent investigation by Springfield Police revealed that LIRIANO shot the woman during a street robbery, and police obtained a warrant from Springfield District Court for charging him with armed robbery with a firearm, assault and battery with a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. LIRIANO is also the subject of a warrant for breaking and entering for a separate incident.

MSP VFAS added him to the unit’s list of Most Wanted fugitives on May 10. An updated Most Wanted poster is below.

13 receive certificates in New Bedford High School Biotech Lab training program

Students, staff and guests gathered today at New Bedford High School’s state-of-the-art Biotech Lab to celebrate the first graduating class of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center High School Apprenticeship Challenge. 13 students make up the first class of the specialized training program, which prepares them for lab internships and jobs in research, science and industry.

Receiving Certificates of Completion: Yousef Ahmed, Corelys Santiago Cruz, Ana Curry, Jacelina Goncalves, Jaqueline Le, Annie Lin, Kiara Monteiro, Katherine Papas, Dhruvi Patel, Tevany Spencer, Esmeralda Barea Velez, Christopher Villard, and Jun Zhang.

The Biotech Lab opened in May 2018, made possible by a $110,000 grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC). In March 2019, NBHS was enabled to implement the training program, thanks to an additional MLSC grant of $40,000. The lab is a university-caliber training facility furnished with the latest biotechnology equipment, tools and supplies.

Speakers at the event included Thomas Anderson, NBPS Superintendent; Bernadette Coelho, NBHS Headmaster; Beth Nicklas, MLSC General Counsel and Vice President for Academic & Workforce Programs; Tracie Ferreira, Associate Professor, Bioengineering , University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; Brian McCauley, NBHS teacher; and students Ana Curry and Katherine Papas.

Superintendent Anderson congratulated the students on their completion of the 9-week program and the challenging subject matter and multifaceted laboratory techniques they were required to master. He expressed the thanks of the district and city for the MLSC and UMD partnerships that have made the lab and the training program a reality for NBHS students.

Headmaster Coelho commended students as the first class to graduate from the program, and noted that paid internship opportunities at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth are available this summer. She recognized the program’s teachers and staff, including Mr. Kolbeck, Mr. Cohen, Ms. Bonner, Mr. McCauley, Ms. Cost, and Ms. Martinez, Graduation Facilitator.

Beth Nicklas noted that the MLSC mission is “to support the life sciences, including biopharmaceutical companies, biotech, medical device, and research that will lead to cures and therapies, and to better outcomes for diseases. So this is special work. We need all of you to contribute to it, if this is your passion. There are lots of opportunities in this state.” She added “Our funding helps provide the equipment, but the real energy here comes from you, your instructors, your teachers and your passion and excitement for learning.”

In her congratulatory remarks, Dr. Ferreira noted to graduates “There are so many applications for the skill set that you’ve learned here. The great thing about biotechnology is that there are a lot of life science initiatives and diseases to solve. And while you may not all become physicians or go into disease management; there’s also going to be all the environmental applications that will help make the world a better place; for example, through work in areas such as energy-sustaining biofuel production.”

Students Ana Curry and Katherine Papas related their experiences with the program. “We’ve gained many different skills in the lab and gained knowledge of new concepts that have helped us in other areas such as our AP courses. We also improved our ability to work in teams because this lab is a very collaborative setting.”

During the reception that followed, students discussed their research projects, which they had been working on since mid-April. Displayed on large-format posters around the lab, the team projects include 454 DNA Sequencing, Transformation by Electroporation, CRISPR-Cas9, and Polymerase Chain Reaction.

About the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is an economic development and investment agency dedicated to supporting the growth and development of the life sciences in Massachusetts, home to the most verdant and productive life sciences ecosystem in the world. Through public-private funding initiatives, MLSC supports innovation, research & development, commercialization, and manufacturing activities in the fields of biopharma, medical device, diagnostics, and digital health.

About the MLSC High School Apprenticeship Challenge
