“Big-Hearted Bollywood Razzle-Dazzle.” -London Evening Standard.

“Triumphant! Beautiful! Flawless!” -BroadwayWorld.com.

After numerous sold-out international tours, Taj Express: The Musical returns to North America and arrives at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Sunday, November 17, at 7:00 p.m. The cultural phenomenon showcases explosive dances, eye-catching costumes, and an endearing love story told in a way only Bollywood could dream up. Tickets to the song-and-dance extravaganza range from $35 to $49 ($10 for students), and are available by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales for 10 tickets or more can be purchased at a discounted rate by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Set to an unforgettable soundtrack featuring the songs of Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, Taj Express answers the age-old question: do you think with your head or with your heart? The musical explodes with the sounds of India and Bollywood, capturing the vibrant, expressive spirit of the world of Bollywood movies that have been entertaining billions of people in India for generations. Told through a fusion of film, dance, and music, this dazzling international sensation has captivated audiences from London to Hong Kong (and everywhere in between) on a live cinematic journey through modern Indian culture and society.

Taj Express is choreographed by one of Bollywood’s top young choreographers, Vaibhavi Merchant (Sultan, Befikre, Tiger Zinda Hai, Loveyatri) and directed by Shruti Merchant (Dhoom, Lakshya, Baghban, Devdas). They are joined by Toby Gough (writer), Salim and Sulaiman Merchant (music composers), Abhijit Vaghani (musical director), and Bipin Tanna (costume designer). Pranav Merchant serves as executive producer.

Leading the cast are some of Bollywood’s biggest film stars: Mr. Ninad Samaddar Shankar, Mr. Rajitdev Easwardas (as Arjun) and Ms. Tanvi Patil (as Kareena Kaboom). They are joined by a company of eighteen dancers, plus Chandan Raina on guitar, Prathamesh Kandalkar on percussion and Avadhoot Phadke on flute.

“A New England Nutcracker,” a regional twist on a holiday classic

New Bedford Ballet will perform its annual production of A New England Nutcracker December 7 through 15 at the NBB Community Theatre, located at 2343 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Journey back to the 1850s, as this favorite holiday story is re-imagined through New Bedford’s historic whaling era, and prepare for the “City That Lit the World” to light up your holiday season.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, the performance follows young Mary through a night of adventure. You’ll begin at the lavish home of Captain Ephraim Williams where many guests, including Herman Melville, arrive at a holiday party, and the family celebrates the homecoming of the Captain after years at sea. He shares tales of his travels and comes bearing gifts, including exotic, dancing animals, and of course, a beautiful nutcracker for young Mary. After Mary drifts to sleep, the real adventures begin as the audience watches battling mice and soldiers, ending with the triumphant defeat of the Mouse Queen. The magical journey continues as Mary sails through dancing snowflakes to the Land of Sweets. The performance is filled with colorful and playful characters from around the globe, including those unique to the New England region. The audience is entertained by Chinese, Spanish, French, and Russian dancers as well as whaling sailors and Native Americans. The performance brings a much-loved international holiday tale into our hometown.

This original adaptation of the traditional Nutcracker ballet, created by Rebecca Waskiel-Marchesseault, Director of the New Bedford Ballet, features choreography by Ms. Waskiel-Marchesseault, Erin Petitjean Allen, and Eugenia Zinovieva. The performance takes place in New Bedford Ballet’s studio, offering an intimate environment charged with the dancers’ energy. This simple version with narration is engaging for children, and the hour-long performance is perfect for anyone juggling the many events that fill the holiday season.

Ten performances will take place over two weekends:

• Saturday, December 7 at 1:30 and 3 PM
• Sunday, December 8 at 1:30 and 3 PM
• Friday, December 13 at 6:30 and 8 PM
• Saturday, December 14 at 1:30 and 3 PM
• Sunday, December 15 at 1:30 and 3 PM

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $7 for seniors, students, and children. Group rates for non-profit organizations are available. All proceeds from the ballet support the New Bedford Ballet Foundation, a non-profit organization. For over twenty years, the Foundation has granted scholarships and given thousands of area school children and seniors the opportunity to witness the splendor and beauty of ballet. As a result of private and corporate contributions to the Foundation, the Youth Ballet will also be performing A New England Nutcracker for students from PACE Head Start, Early Learning Center, the Schwartz Center for Children, the Kennedy-Donovan Center, Hayden-McFadden Elementary School and adults from Project Independence.

Celebrate the season with this classic holiday story that never gets old. Tickets are limited and sell quickly; reserve yours soon by contacting the New Bedford Ballet at 508-993-1387. For more information visit our website, www.newbedfordballet.org.

About Lenny:
Lenny Clarke was born and raised in Cambridge, MA, in September,1953 as one of eight children. While putting himself through college at UMASS Boston by working as a janitor, he and his friends visited an open mic comedy night at the Ding Ho Restaurant in Cambridge and was convinced he could do the same thing. Clarke returned the next week, and famously says the crowd reaction is the second best feeling in the world. The rest they say is history.

By the mid 1980’s Lenny had become one of the most famous comics from Boston, working alongside Sam Kinison, Denis Leary, Don Gavin and Steve Sweeney touring the country. The DVD release of When Standup Stood Out in 2006 details Clarke’s early career and the affiliations with other famous Boston Comics.

By 1990, Clarke starred in his own network sitcom Lenny (1990), and appeared in such TV shows as Contest Searchlight, The Job, The John Larroquette Show, It’s All Relative and movies like Monument Ave., Fever Pitch and Southie

From 2004 to 2011, Clarke appeared in the recurring role of Uncle Teddy on the FX comedy-drama Rescue Me. Since then he has had recurring roles on Burn Notice, Are you there Chelsea with Chelsea Handler and the famed USA series Sirens. Lenny can currently be seen in the Showtime series “City On A Hill”.
