Four downtown New Bedford blocks will be filled with people from all walks of life enjoying the tastes, sights and sounds of Portuguese culture, including lectures on the contributions of Portuguese-Americans, readings, live music, cooking demos, folkloric dance and more. Don’t miss the free festa that’s fun for the whole family!

This performance is linked to The Z’s 2017/2018 ArtsBridge theme of The Immigrant’s Journey, which celebrates New Bedford’s rich cultural history. The slate of programming includes Birdman Live starring Antonio Sanchez, Viva Portugal, Ana Moura, Through a Portagee Gate and more.

After the festa, experience the achingly beautiful Portuguese folk music, fado, in a setting worthy of the sound! Viva Portugal will transform The Zeiterion stage into an intimate and soulful fado cafe featuring a performance by California-based fadistas Angela Brito and David Garcia, with a special guest appearance by Portugal’s Sofia Ribeiro. No fado club would be complete without food and drink, so please come early to enjoy a complimentary wine tasting and savory bites sampling before the show. All proceeds benefit Discovery Language Academy and Zeiterion Performing Arts Center This event is generously sponsored by Luso-American Financial. Find more information here.

Black Violin’s “Classical Boom Tour” blends jazz, hip-hop, funk and classical music at Zeiterion, April 6

Take one violin, one viola, add a DJ and a drum kit, and you have Black Violin, the hip-hop, Brahms-playing quartet who have shared stages with Kanye West, Aerosmith and Tom Petty, and collaborated with the likes of Wu-Tang Clan and Alicia Keys. They return to The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Friday, April 6 at 8:00 p.m, where they are as likely to improv a Top 40 club hit as they are to perform with the virtuosity of concert soloists. Tickets range from $22 to $35, and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at Zeiterion.org, or at the Zeiterion Box Office. Group sales are available for groups of 10 or more and can be purchased by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Black Violin is composed of classically trained violist and violinist Wil B. And Kev Marcus, who fuse their classical training and hip-hop influences to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom.” In the mid-2000s, these two long-time classmates reluctantly discovered instrumental music in school and turned their hobby into a thriving career. After attending college on music scholarships, the duo formed a band that would eventually travel the globe and perform with many Top 40 artists. Their music has enthralled audiences from London to Milan to Dubai, and millions of viewers on YouTube.

They’ve composed music for the television series Pitch which debuted on FOX in 2016, in addition to appearances on HBO’s Ballers, The Tonight Show, The Wendy Williams Show, and The Ellen Show.

Black Violin is currently writing and recording their next studio album, due out in 2018. The band’s most recent record, Stereotypes, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart. NPR praised the album and band, saying “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.”

In December, Black Violin was announced as the Turnaround Artist for Mary B. Bethune Elementary School in their hometown of Broward County, FL. Turnaround Arts, a national education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, infuses arts into struggling schools to support overall reform efforts. Founded by President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2012, the program partners schools with music instrument grants, arts supplies, professional development, musicals, and pairs each school with an artist to provide mentorship, inspiration, and support for the school’s journey in the program. Turnaround Artists include Elton John, Edward Norton, and Yo-Yo Ma, among other highly acclaimed members of the arts community.

In addition, Black Violin has performed for more than 100,000 students in the past 12 months throughout North America and Europe. The band is endorsed by Yamaha Music, and has partnered with the National Association for Music Manufacturers (NAMM) to continue their advocacy for accessible music education.

Zeiterion unites Beantown’s “Best In Boston” Comedy Jam for one epic night of stand-up

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center brings four Boston-based comedians for one epic night of stand-up in Boston Comedy Jam on Thursday, April 5, at 8:00 p.m. Veterans Lenny Clarke and Steve Sweeney headline the line-up that also includes Christine Hurley and Sal Votano for a night of laughs. Tickets range from $20 to $29 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at Zeiterion.org, or at the Zeiterion Box Office. Group sales are available for groups of 10 or more and can be purchased by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Comedians Clarke (Rescue Me, Are You There Chelsea?) and Sweeney (Me, Myself & Irene, There’s Something About Mary) are nationally recognized for their renowned stand-up and hilarious appearances in movies and television. They each take center stage with comedy juggernauts Hurley, known as “Queen of Boston Comedy,” and Votano who have kept the city in stitches with their comical and relatable takes on life in Massachusetts.

About the comedians:

Veteran Boston stand-up comedian Lenny Clarke has an oddly calibrated act — his material and his perspective is very much in an old-school Don Rickles vein, but his attitude is very much that of a quick-witted young comic. This contrast comes wrapped in a conversational, deceptively genial delivery, with just brief moments of clowning. Clarke is also unpredictable in a very good way on stage — you don’t know where he’s going to go next. It’s never the same show twice.

Dubbed by one admirer “the undisputed King of Boston comedy,” Steve Sweeney embodies, almost literally, the city he calls home. A master of dialects and character voices, Sweeney can riff on everyone from Dorchester church ladies to Beacon Hill pols to certain radio personalities who seem a little too old to be peddling rock and roll to younger generations. In fact, while Sweeney has played to national audiences many times throughout his 30-year career – not only by touring as a stand-up but also through roles in sitcoms and movies – he is so thoroughly Bostonian that he merits his own stop on the Freedom Trail.

Known as the “Queen of Boston Comedy,” Christine Hurley is a married mother of five children, which provides her with much of her material. She’s appeared on Nick At Nite, CBS and NESN, and she was selected to be part of “Comics Come Home” in 2015 at the Boston Garden where she shared the stage with Steven Wright, Jimmy Fallon, Lenny Clarke, Ray Romano and Louis CK, hosted by Denis Leary.

One of Boston’s rising stars, Sal Votano performs clubs, corporate, benefits and private shows with some of Boston’s top comedians like Steve Sweeney and Lenny Clarke. He was a semi-finalist in the 2009 Giggles comedy competition and the 2010 Plymouth Comedy Festival. His one-liner style comedy about growing up in Lynn, marriage, being a builder and owning a liquor store will surely make you laugh.

Zeiterion Presents Five-Time GRAMMY® Award-Winning “Ladysmith Black Mambazo,” March 11

On the heels of their fifth GRAMMY® win, Ladysmith Black Mambazo stops at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m. as part of the ensemble’s 2018 World Tour. The legendary group, who have recorded with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, among many others, recently won the GRAMMY Award for “Best World Music Album 2017” for Shaka Zulu Revisited. Tickets range from $25 to $48 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at Zeiterion.org, or at the Zeiterion Box Office. Group sales are available for groups of 10 or more and can be purchased by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Designated as “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World” by the late great South African President Nelson Mandela, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been on a mission to spread peace, love and harmony all around the world through song. The group won their first GRAMMY Award in 1988, and their latest win marks the fifth GRAMMY Award in their long and storied career. They are currently on a World Tour, performing songs from their GRAMMY Award-winning albums throughout the United States through April 2018.

Shaka Zulu Revisited is a 30-year celebration of the group’s first internationally released studio album, Shaka Zulu, which won the group their first GRAMMY Award. In 2014, Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s founder Joseph Shabalala retired, handing his four sons the role of joint leaders. With the passing of his torch, Joseph’s sons wanted to honor their father and other members of the original group, who have retired or passed away. By re-recording the songs from their original album, they present these new versions for both longtime fans as well as people who have only recently become acquainted with the group’s music. Joseph’s son Thulani Shabalala says, “Shaka Zulu Revisited encompasses so much history for us. By re-recording the original album and having the Recording Academy deem Shaka Zulu Revisited one of the five ‘Best World Music Albums of 2017,’ this becomes an amazing moment for everyone involved with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, both past and present.”

The group was also nominated for a GRAMMY Award in 2017 for Songs of PEACE & LOVE for Kids & Parents Around the World. It’s a collection of songs with a message for parents, their children, and everyone to share and enjoy during these trying times. The nominations for Shaka Zulu Revisited and Songs of PEACE & LOVE for Kids & Parents Around the World mark the ensemble’s 18th and 19th GRAMMY nominations during the past 30 years.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo was founded in the early 1960s by Joseph Shabalala. In 1986, the American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously went to South Africa and recorded the group’s rich harmonies for his iconic album, Graceland – a landmark recording that is considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. Since then, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with a wide variety of artists including Stevie Wonder, Sarah McLachlan, Dolly Parton, Josh Groban, David Guetta, Emmylou Harris and many more. In addition to the group’s winter tour of the USA, Ladysmith Black Mambazo will also tour in 2018 to the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and return to the USA once again.

Zeiterion presents Author and Iconic Artists, Patty Smith, January 26

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center brings author, iconic artist, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Patti Smith to New Bedford on Friday, January 26, at 8:00 p.m. Smith will read from her latest book, Devotion, which all attendees will receive on the night of the reading. Tickets are $30, which includes a copy of Devotion, and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at Zeiterion.org, or at the Zeiterion Box Office. Group sales are available for groups of 10 or more and can be purchased by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

While known for contributions in the music industry as the “godmother of punk rock,” Smith is a celebrated author. Her memoir Just Kids received a National Book Award and M Train became a critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller. Devotion offers a detailed account of the artist’s own creative process, inspirations, and unexpected connections. She will read from this new, groundbreaking book, though her appearance does not include a public book signing.

In Devotion, Smith first presents an original and beautifully crafted tale of obsession—a young skater who lives for her art, a possessive collector who ruthlessly seeks his prize, a relationship forged of need both craven and exalted. She then takes us on a second journey, exploring the sources of her story. We travel through the South of France to Camus’s house, and visit the garden of the great publisher Gallimard where the ghosts of Mishima, Nabokov, and Genet mingle. Smith tracks down Simone Weil’s grave in a lonely cemetery, hours from London, and winds through the nameless Paris streets of Patrick Modiano’s novels. Whether writing in a café or a train, Smith generously opens her notebooks and lets us glimpse the alchemy of her art and craft in this arresting and original book on writing.

Patti Smith is a writer, performer, and visual artist. She was awarded the prestigious title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French Republic. Her seminal album Horses has been hailed as one of the top one hundred albums of all time, and in 2007 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Smith lives in New York City.

Ed Asner and Kate Burton to star in “The Soap Myth” at the Z

Seven-time Emmy Award-winner Ed Asner and three-time Emmy Award and Tony Award-nominee Kate Burton will star in a staged reading of Jeff Cohen’s play The Soap Myth, at The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Saturday, January 27 at 7pm. The readings, directed by Pam Berlin, will also feature Ned Eisenberg and Blair Baker, and serve as a tribute to International Holocaust Remembrance Day, also on January 27. This performance is the only New England appearance on a seven-venue East Coast tour, and is presented in association with Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford. Tickets are $18 and $36 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at www.zeiterion.org, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford.

Mr. Asner, who is beloved for the character of Lou Grant and the 2009 feature film UP, will perform the role of Holocaust survivor Milton Saltzman and Ms. Burton, adored for her performance as Ellis Grey on the hit show “Grey’s Anatomy,” will perform the roles of Holocaust scholar Esther Feinman and Holocaust denier Brenda Goodsen.
The Soap Myth takes place more than a half century after the end of WWII when a young journalist sets out to write an article about a Holocaust survivor and his crusade regarding the Nazi atrocity of soap. The play dramatically explores how a person survives and questions who has the right to write history – those who have lived it and remember, those who study and protect it, or those who would seek to distort and desecrate its very existence.

The Soap Myth was originally produced Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theater in 2012 by the National Jewish Theater Foundation. A film of that production was broadcast nationally on PBS and is in the permanent collection of Britain’s Digital Theatre.

New Bedford High School Drama Club Presents Romeo & Juliet

by Jamie Roballo

The New Bedford High School Drama Club is proud to present their production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” with performances December 1st and 2nd at 8 and 3rd at 2.
This is a classic play, arguably Shakespeare’s most famous, and its beautiful and timeless story is still relevant today. The rivalry between House Capulet and House Montague, the fervor of the fights, the passionate love at first sight between our titular hero and heroine, are all still as palpable and effective as they were five hundred years ago. Everyone knows the story, and each time reading or watching it brings on a new feeling of hope, excitement, futility, and awe as the familiar plot progresses, spiraling ever downwards. Some may argue that Romeo and Juliet is a love story, some may say that it’s a tragedy or an example, but regardless, it’s a play that leaves everyone speechless.

Sarah Cadieux Pacheco, the NBHS Theatre Teacher and Drama Club Co-Director, explains the ideas behind this production. “Our inspiration in tackling such a well-known piece has been to not only modernize, but to put our own spin on the presentation- much like a contemporary artist does with a cover song. Audience members will notice cover songs of well-known music interspersed throughout the show.”
A question that comes up often when you think of Romeo and Juliet- is it really the beautiful love story it’s portrayed as, or is it merely a cautionary tale? Says Caitlyn Hodges, “I feel as if it’s a love story, because they’re so deeply in love that they decide they can’t live without each other…it may be insane, but insanity is love.” Caitlyn plays the Apothecary. Sara Cravo, Lady Montague, however, has a differing opinion.

“I think [Romeo and Juliet] is a tragedy, because it’s the story of two families who can’t get along…it’s sad because the ending is inevitable, and the whole story is spent fighting against destiny.”
Why should you come and see Romeo and Juliet? According to Zara Lemieux, Drama Club president, “It’s not really as sacred as people think…it’s a lot crasser and a lot funnier. It doesn’t need to be taken so seriously…it’s a fun time.” Jakob Braz, Benvolio, says, “People should come see the show because of all the work and dedication that we’ve put into it, and the talent of the students.”
Tickets for “Romeo & Juliet” are available at the NBHS Bronspiegel Auditorium Box Office beginning 30 minutes before each performance.

Ticket reservations are accepted by emailing scadieux@newbedfordschools.org. Drama Club students involved in the production include: Zara Lemieux, Jaden Borden, Ethan Bousquet, Sara Cravo, Seth Sweeney, Jakob Braz, Ashley Cowles, Jayden Lima, Joshua Botelho, Eva Watts-Pine, Madison Ashworth, Trevor Lopes, Leah Leahy, Britney Soares, Jamie Roballo, Caitlin Hodges, Laura Conde, Maxine Duarte, Ricardo Alvira, Jasmine Garrick, Isabel Almy-Daigle, Rhyan Ramos, Taryn Padilla, Akissi Konan, Megan Lima, Quinn Mulvey, Claire Morck, Pearl Racine, Hailey Duarte, Devin Duarte, Maranda Gray, Joseph Martin, Kaycee Langlois, Gianalis Estrella, and Cheyenne Rodriguez. The production is co-directed by Sarah Cadieux Pacheco and Aaron Valente.
