Hollywood medium Tyler Henry brings new live show “Life Lessons I’ve Learned From The Departed” to the Zeiterion, June 20

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is pleased to present Tyler Henry with his new live show “Life Lessons I’ve Learned From The Departed” on Thursday, June 20, at 8:00 p.m. The star of E!’s “Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry” will discuss his unique gift and how it affects his everyday life, and it will include a multi-media video presentation, live readings, and audience Q&A. Tickets range from $59 to $79 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales of 10 tickets or more are available by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Growing up in a small town in central California, Tyler began receiving intuitive mental images when he was only 10 years old with the foretelling of his grandmother’s death. Intimate communication with a deceased loved one evolved into “reading” classmates, and Tyler soon found himself the victim of schoolyard bullying. Between speaking to the dead and predicting people’s futures, and juggling math homework and gym class, life for a teenage medium in a small town became anything but easy.

After a series of life-changing events, including a near-death experience, Tyler recognized that his passion, calling and life purpose was to bring clarity and closure to those he was privileged to read.

Word of his talents spread so quickly that 22-year-old Tyler has relocated to Los Angeles and now stars in the mega hit TV series “Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry” on E! Television Network now in its 4th season. In each episode the young medium sits down and has one-on-one readings with Hollywood’s top celebrities. His celebrity includes Jim Parsons, Eva Longoria, Ellen DeGeneres, Allison Janney, Kris Jenner, Krissey Metz, Bobby Brown, Portia de Rossi, Mel B, Lil’ Kim, Dr. Drew, Tom Arnold, Ru Paul, Khloe and Kim Kardashian, Jamie Pressley, Jewel, and among many more.

Tyler recently added “best-selling author” to his impressive resume with Between Two Worlds, a memoir about his journey in Hollywood and as a medium.

Folk Icon Arlo Guthrie returns to the Zeiterion to perform “Alice’s Restaurant,” May 31

“A great reminder of just how effective a bit of absurdity can be when it comes to combating serious issues.”Rolling Stone

“The strength of ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ is its feel of truth — and how it speaks that truth to power.”Washington Post

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center welcomes legendary Arlo Guthrie back to its historic stage Friday, May 31, at 8:00 p.m. The folk music icon returns with “Alice’s Restaurant – Back By Popular Demand Tour” that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the feature film “Alice’s Restaurant.” Tickets range from $35 to $55 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales of 10 tickets or more are available at a discount by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

When Arlo took to the road to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his seminal song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” he was incredibly moved by the feedback from enthusiastic fans. Originally released in 1969, “Alice’s Restaurant” starred Arlo as himself, his first foray into acting, and was directed by famed director Arthur Penn. It was filmed in the Berkshires, Arlo’s own backyard, recreating some of the events that launched the Massacree, while adding a good dose of fiction. Ultimately, the movie garnered a “Best Director” Oscar Award nomination for Penn. Of the film, Roger Ebert said, “It is also good to have Arlo Guthrie himself, who is quiet and open and good on camera… ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ …becomes a synthesis of Arlo’s spirit and Arthur Penn’s tact.”

“I didn’t think I was gonna live long enough to have to learn ‘Alice’s Restaurant’ again,” Arlo says with a smile. “It was a quirky kinda thing to begin with. Nobody writes an 18-minute monologue expecting fame and fortune. The initial success of the song really took me by surprise more than anyone else. The fact that I have contended with it for five decades either by having to learn it again or by not doing it, has been an interesting balancing act. I’m surely looking forward to it again being a centerpiece of my live repertoire.”

Currently on the road for the last year presenting the Re:Generation Tour, Arlo along with his son Abe will be joined onstage on the forthcoming tour with long time collaborators Terry “A La Berry” Hall (drums), Steve Ide (guitar, vocals) and Carol Ide (vocals, percussion) of his former acclaimed band Shenandoah.

In July 2017 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the “Summer of Love” and the original release of Arlo’s debut album, Rhino Records re-released the full mono version of the album Alice’s Restaurant on 180 gram vinyl. In March 2018, the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress inducted “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” into the registry honoring the recording for its cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the American soundscape.

Folk songs enduring many decades of change only become classics when storylines remain just as relevant today as they were when originally composed. “Alice’s Restaurant” is of this ilk; it’s now weaved into the fabric of American society. Fans have embraced “Alice’s Restaurant” as part of their annual Thanksgiving tradition, but also view it as one of the more pronounced “anti-stupid” rally songs. Every year, Arlo receives handfuls of letters from Vietnam vets and soldiers currently at war expressing their heartfelt connection to the song. Today, times are eerily similar to the mid-60’s, with unpopular wars being fought far away from home, and soldiers finding ways to cope. Music is often the best medicine to soothe the soul. However listeners interpret the quintessential tune, we can be rest assured that people of all different walks of life come together singing that famous chorus, “You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant…”

Camane, fado singer from Portugal, caps off Viva Portugal Festival at The Zeiterion

Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is pleased to present one of Portugal’s most famous fadistas, Camané, for a beautiful evening of fado on Saturday, May 4, at 8:00 p.m. He will be joined by Ana Sofia Varela, a rising star in the genre, immediately following Viva Portugal, a free, family-friendly festival featuring Portuguese food, music and culture. Tickets for Camané’s performance range from $39 to $59 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales of 10 tickets and more are available by calling 508-997-5664 x1233.

Camané is the leading male singer of the new generation of Portugal’s native urban song, fado, ever since his first album came out in 1995 – and one of the few men working within this most tricky field. He is also one of the most outstanding Portuguese singers to have come out of any generation; a voice so smooth and soulful, so passionate and yet controlled, that you wonder how such wise and weary vocal stylings could belong to someone so young. Camané replaces Carlos do Carmo, who is unable to travel to the United States due to health concerns.

In addition to songs from the scope of Camané’s career, the performance will feature special guest Ana Sofia Varela. Varela started her musical career singing at age 10, and she has since risen to stardom within fado. Joining the fadistas on stage will be Carlos Manuel Proença on classic guitar, Luis Guerreiro on Portuguese guitar, and Marino de Freitas on bass.

Preceding Camané’s performance will be Viva Portugal, the free, family-friendly festival outside the Zeiterion from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event is held in conjunction with several local Portuguese-American organizations to bring the tastes, sights and sounds of Portuguese culture and heritage to downtown New Bedford. The event will feature food and craft vendors, cooking demonstrations, a performance by The Portuguese Kids comedy troupe, and much more. No ticket or reservation needed.

The Zeiterion celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with Fiddle Phenoms Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center presents the fierce fiddling duo of Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m. Known as the reigning couple of Celtic music, they are now on tour with a full band for a world-class performance of traditional fiddling, dancing, and singing. This spirited evening highlights the unique talents, influences, and stories of the first family of traditional fiddling. Tickets range from $35 to $49 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales of 10 tickets and more are available by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

MacMaster and Leahy bring the audience on a musical and personal journey with their current North American tour, Visions from Cape Breton & Beyond. For this special appearance on St. Patrick’s Day, they’ll share the legendary musical traditions of their hometowns of Ontario and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, alongside their musically gifted children. It’s an explosive celebration of raw energy and passion that infuses their traditional heritage with their taste for the contemporary.

When two of music’s best fiddle players married in 2002, the proverbial mantelpiece was instantly crammed with JUNO and East Coast Music Awards. Though MacMaster and Leahy followed different trajectories – she a Cape Breton native who could step-dance before she could walk; he the oldest brother of acclaimed family group Leahy – both had assuredly crested the traditional music peak.

Their first recorded collaboration, 2015’s Bob Ezrin-produced album One, which was followed by 2016’s A Celtic Family Christmas (and which cemented the couple’s status as powerhouses on the seasonal circuit) confirmed MacMaster and Leahy were as dynamic working together as they were working apart. Their combined album sales exceed one million, and past collaborators include Yo-Yo Ma, Alison Krauss and Béla Fleck, to name a few.

MacMaster and Leahy’s Zeiterion performance will open with special guests from The Kanaley School of Irish Dance to perform a set of traditional sets, jigs, reels, and group ceili dances. The evening will kick off with a special performance by the Old Time Fiddle Session Community Group in the Zeiterion Member Lounge from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The national tour of the Broadway smash “Something Rotten” comes to the Zeiterion, Nov. 27

“A deliriously entertaining new musical comedy that brings down the house!” – New York Post

The national tour of the Tony-nominated musical Something Rotten! arrives at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, November 27, at 7:30 p.m. It’s an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals. Tickets range from $47 to $67 and can be purchased by calling 508-994-2900, online at https://zeiterion.org/, or at the Zeiterion Box Office at 684 Purchase Street in New Bedford. Group sales of 10 tickets or more can be purchased by calling 508-997-5664 x123.

Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Something Rotten was originally directed and choreographed on Broadway by Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw (Mean Girls, The Book of Mormon), with music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winner and Tony Award nominee Wayne Kirkpatrick and Golden Globe Award and Tony Award nominee Karey Kirkpatrick and a book by Tony Award nominees Karey Kirkpatrick and best-selling author John O’Farrell.

This hilarious new musical comedy tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer foretells the next big thing in theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s very first musical. With the most singing, the most dancing and the most gut-busting laughs on Broadway, it’s “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York).

With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals — those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us, and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point!

The award-winning design team of Broadway veterans includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Gregg Barnes (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Josh Marquette (hair design), Phil Reno (music supervision), Glen Kelly (arrangements), Larry Hochman (orchestrations), Steve Bebout (associate director), Brian P. Kennedy (associate music supervision) and casting by Wojcik | Seay Casting.

Something Rotten! was originally produced on Broadway by Kevin McCollum, Broadway Global Ventures, CMC, Mastro/Goodman, Jerry & Ronald Frankel, Morris Berchard, Kyodo Tokyo Inc., Wendy Federman, Barbara Freitag, Lams Productions, Winkler/DeSimone, Timothy Laczynski, Dan Markley, Harris/Karmazin, JAM Theatricals, Robert Greenblatt, Jujamcyn Theaters.
