New Bedford’s Sea Lab 51st Commencement draws hundreds

Sea Lab held its fifty-first Commencement Exercises this morning at its Marine Science Education Center, located at 71 Portland Street in New Bedford’s far south end. More than 600 guests attended the day’s events, which included graduation, open house, a student science project exhibition and tours of the center’s laboratories and classrooms.

Simone Bourgeois, Sea Lab Facilitator, welcomed families, friends, and special guests including city and state officials. In her remarks, Ms. Bourgeois noted the program’s continuous growth since its founding in 1968 with 12 students and one teacher “to the 2019 enrollment of three hundred twenty students, grades three through nine, and forty-two staff members.”

Commencement exercises included presentation of scholarships, diving and sailing awards, and certificates in swimming, sailing and boating safety.

Sea Lab College Scholarships were awarded to: Noah Barton, Hannah Berger, Cecelia Chan, Dakota Chixarro, Alyssa DaCosta, Elizabeth Golden, Molly Hoefel, Madison Kruger, Christopher Ng, Logan Quintin, Kassandra Stone, Eva Watts-Pine, Carmen Zhao, and Meiling Zhao.

Sea Lab founder, Paul Levasseur, was honored for his 51 years of dedication to the growth and success of the program.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Stephen M. Coan, president and CEO of Sea Research Foundation, which operates Mystic Aquarium, a longtime educational partner of Sea Lab. Animal behaviorists from Mystic Aquarium have visited Sea Lab every Wednesday for nearly fifteen years, traveling from Connecticut to instruct fourth and fifth-grade students on “North Atlantic indigenous flora and fauna and the importance of being a caretaker of the natural environment.”

Sea Lab is the New Bedford Public Schools marine science education program funded through student tuition and New Bedford Public Schools for the perpetuation of real science activities.

Historically, Sea Lab has existed as a six-week summer program servicing academically serious students since 1968. Sea Lab is a forerunner in educational practices: a school focused on introducing university and high school level science concepts and related marine activities to pre-university students, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve. The success of the summer program precipitated the implementation of an academic year program in 2000, which was established to expose a larger population of New Bedford Public School students to the realm of marine and aquatic sciences.

Since 1968, Sea Lab has been located by the sea on the Fort Rodman peninsula, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Presently, Sea Lab is housed in a state-of-the-art science laboratory center constructed primarily to educate New Bedford Public School students interested in studying principles of oceanography, limnology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, geology, biology and robotics as related to the marine and aquatic environments.

The teaching materials, selected and/or developed by the instructors for presentation at different grade levels, illustrate the desire to achieve a balance between the introduction of basic scientific concepts and the discussion of observable phenomena. Sea Lab curriculum is designed to be progressive and cumulative from the third grade to the ninth grade. The current Sea Lab Program is an inquiry based, high interest, hands-on, intensive course of study designed to appeal to the serious student. Practical outdoor skills, such as swimming, sailing, snorkeling, boat building, and crew are also integral to the summer Sea Lab experience.

In addition to offering challenging academic activities, Sea Lab students participate in field studies conducted along the Massachusetts and Rhode Island coastlines. Students also have the opportunity to participate in on-going scientific research with local, national and international colleges and universities.

The Academic Year, full-time Sea Lab Program commenced in 2000 as an extension of the summer Sea Lab Program. Student instruction occurs on a daily basis from September through June at the marine center. The curriculum of the academic year program focuses on but is not limited to the Massachusetts Science Standards. It is designed to increase the science content knowledge of New Bedford’s third, fourth and fifth graders and provide these students with the opportunity to participate in real science laboratory experiences. Hands-on lessons are designed to introduce marine sciences as they apply to the 2016 Massachusetts Science Curriculum Framework Standards of Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Science and Technology with a marine studies component, and Life Sciences focusing on Marine Biology, with microscopy, robotics and dissection emphasis. Field studies to East Beach in New Bedford are conducted with the intent of gathering marine and geological specimens. This hands-on, marine-based curriculum is designed to be multidisciplinary and inquiry-based.

Targeted ground spraying for mosquitoes planned in New Bedford for Aug. 16 and Aug. 20

The New Bedford Health Department, working closely with the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is again this year conducting an annual monitoring program to track the potential threat from EEE and WNV carrying mosquitoes. Under the program, mosquito traps are put in place to collect pools of mosquitoes and mosquito populations are monitored throughout the summer months.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has notified the New Bedford Health Department that New Bedford is currently in the critical risk zone for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) due to recent positive testing of the disease found in bird-biting and mammal-bitting mosquitoes within the city.

As part of the mosquito tracking program, the New Bedford Health Department will request that the BCMCP target key areas of the New Bedford for spraying, including public parks and locations that host large public events.

As such, the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project will conduct targeted ground spraying for mosquitoes early on the morning of Friday, August 16, 2019. This round of spraying will target areas including Buttonwood Park, Brooklawn Park, Fort Taber, Hazelwood Park, Riverside Park, Clasky Common Park, Ashley Park, the Poor Farm area, Custom House Square and the downtown area.

The Bristol County Mosquito Control Project will also conduct targeted ground spraying for mosquitoes early on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, 2019. This round of spraying will target the far North End of the city, including the areas surrounding the New Bedford Business Park, New Bedford Regional Airport, Sassaquin Pond, and Acushnet Avenue north of Phillips Avenue.

Spraying will take place between 2:00 am and sunrise on Friday and Tuesday morning, weather permitting. Residents in the vicinity of the targeted areas may wish to close their windows this evening prior to the spraying.

The same precautionary measures are advised for EEE, WNV, and the Zika virus. These include the following:

Avoid Mosquito Bites

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours – While mosquitoes are out at all hours of the day, their peak biting times are from dusk to dawn. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing, especially if you work or spend a lot of time outdoors.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

Drain Standing Water – Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.

Install or Repair Screens – Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

Section of New Bedford’s West Beach closed to swimming today

The New Bedford Health Department has announced that West Beach south of the beach’s pavilion has been closed to swimming today, Thursday, August 15, 2019, due to elevated bacteria levels.

The water at all New Bedford beaches will be tested daily until acceptable water quality levels are obtained and swimming can resume at all sections. Further updates regarding openings and closures will be made as water quality results are received.

Additional information is available by calling the New Bedford Health Department at (508) 991-6199.

Mayor Mitchell continues to prepare for legal challenge to Parallel Products

Mayor Jon Mitchell is seeking to put in place the funding necessary to challenge the Parallel Products proposal in the New Bedford Business Park.

In a budget request slated to be considered at the City Council meeting tomorrow (Thursday, August 15), Mayor Mitchell proposed allocating a budget of $250,000 for legal representation for the City of New Bedford in opposing the company’s proposal to establish a new solid waste and biosolids processing facility on Duchaine Boulevard, near its existing glass recycling facility.

In June, the City of New Bedford moved to retain the Boston-based municipal law firm of KP Law, P.C. (formerly known as Kopelman & Paige) to oppose the Parallel Products proposal. KP Law has significant experience in working with the relevant state regulatory agencies, and the firm has established a strong record as serving as outside counsel to the City in other matters. Over the coming months, the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Office (MEPA) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will review the Parallel Products proposal.

“The proposed project would simply be too close to nearby neighborhoods and could harm the quality of life of their residents,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “We anticipate that state regulatory agencies will review the proposal in the coming months, and by having expert counsel ready at hand, we will be prepared to fight effectively on behalf of nearby residents.”

Southcoast Health urges residents to participate in first ever Community Health Survey

In an effort to better understand how the environment in which people live, work, play and age shapes overall heath, and as part of the organization’s unwavering commitment to the patients and communities they serve, Southcoast Health has launched an online community health survey to run during the month of August.

The short survey, which does not collect any personal information, examines challenges in the South Coast community associated with housing, food security, substance abuse, mental health, transportation and more. The information gathered will be analyzed by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Public Policy, one of the many community collaborations through which Southcoast ensures world-class healthcare for local residents, and will become part of the 2019 Southcoast Health Community Needs Assessment.

“Our community members are the leading experts on the day to day of life in the South Coast region.” said Rachel Davis, Director of the Southcoast Health Community Benefits Program. “That’s why it is so important for everyone to participate in this survey and have their voice heard. Southcoast Health is about much more than healthcare – it’s about community care, and the results of the survey will help us to identify solutions to these challenges for residents and for the region.”

The Southcoast Health Needs Assessment is used widely across the community to plan programs and services that meet the region’s most pressing needs while identifying their root causes. To support these efforts, Southcoast proudly collaborates with local health providers, human services agencies, advocacy groups and others that are also dedicated to progress in the community.

“There is increasing evidence that the health of neighborhoods and communities is strongly related to personal health and wellbeing,” said Davis. “We want the broadest possible representation so together we can make the best possible decisions for future investment in our community.”
