OPINION: Options for runaways

It’s important to know who else is in your child’s life.

There is a lack of urgency and fear given to the word ‘runaway’ that is always given to the word “abduction.” Perhaps it’s the misconception that a minor is in complete control of their situation. Maybe in some cases they are, but typically only for a short while. Minors leave their home for various reasons. Some would seem justifiable as a percentage of runaways report fleeing abusive situations. Taking their lives into their own hands and running, for them, is just what they feel is the only option they have.

This isn’t true.

It is important that if you know of a teenager or child in an abusive household that you get them help. They may not know how to do it themselves. If you turn your back on abuse, then you are taking sides with an abuser and they are now your victim as well. If you know of a child being abused or neglected you can report it by going to your local police station, Department of Child & Family or by calling the Child-At-Risk Hotline at 1-800-792-5200.

There are currently 60 records listed from Massachusetts of missing children.

Being silent about abuse is not a burden you want to carry.

There is also a great number of minors who run away that are actually lured away. With technology we have allowed a playground for predators to enter into our child’s lives without our knowledge.

It’s important for children to be taught stranger safety and for teens who are going online to understand how someone they meet on there can very much be a fictional character with a live action dialogue. They study today’s kids/teenagers as if they are studying for a test. They will know their music, movies, video games and how they talk. They have nothing but compliments to give and agree with everything your child says. When you haven’t experienced the world as they haven’t, you are naive to it.

We forget how impulsive and foolish we all once were. The generation that are parents to teens now, did not have the access to the world like their children do. We are learning but they are succeeding past our knowledge. A targeted teen may even be taught by the predator how to erase their tracks. Clear the history on their computers and phones. If there is something for your child to act guilty about there is something for you to be worried about. There should be no secrets that leave room for danger to sneak in between you and your teenager. It’s important to know who else is in your child’s life. It’s important for them to know that if a person wants to be kept a secret than they have ulterior motives. It’s not because they agree with your child and mom and dad “are nosy jerks,” it’s because mom and dad have been around long enough to see the devil behind a smiling Facebook picture.

Sometimes despite our best effort they are not feeling that at home.

The enemy we know. It’s hard to pick your child’s friends and you can’t shadow them at school or maybe other activities they’re involved in. They WILL know people you do not. Those people will know them. Details about your family that you may have not wanted to share. Details about your teenager that they shouldn’t have shared. They could be the type of person, maybe even teenager, that you would not want around your own. There can be something alluring about the bad element. Something that children who have everything going for them will throw it away, unwittingly for.

We can blame movies and television for baiting our children into thinking this is how the world works. We can blame negativity influences but we have to understand that it’s on the parents just as much. We have to know our children, be their parent not their friend and realize that they are more important than ourselves.

If a situation has gotten out of our control we have to ask for help. Turn to the school, to their doctors, to trained professionals with resources. They have to know they matter that much to us. It’s an incredible and important lesson to teach your child that it’s okay to go for help when you need it.

Teenagers want to feel love and acceptance. Sometimes despite our best effort they are not feeling that at home. They deal with the pressures we have forgotten and the needs we grew out of. They are not mature enough to control or understand them. It took us years and it’s the same for them. We didn’t believe it when our parents told us and they won’t believe it when their parents tell them. But while they are going through this pivotal moment of their lives they can fall victim to others who are waiting in what was once the shadows but now the bright screens of computers, tablets and cellphones.

There are currently 60 records listed from Massachusetts of missing children. Some would now be older than you who is reading this now. They disappeared as a child and were never found. One has the name John Doe, a recovered body of a child that couldn’t even be buried with his name. Nobody knows who is or rather who he was.

Being silent about abuse is not a burden you want to carry.

We know that a child that has been abducted is in danger. What we forget is that a minor on their own is also in danger. Children and teenagers need the guidance of an intelligent and responsible much less loving adult (a legal guardian) until they become an adult themselves. If you disagree with that than you must be a teenager who knows everything. Who also believed in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy not too long ago. Who thought their first crush was the best until they met their second. Who doesn’t have the understanding of expenses much less money management. But does know that you’d prefer a five dollar bill over four quarters. You’ve grown up and learned a great deal of things but you have a great deal more to learn.

Every emotion, everything you feel is magnified because you are so young. Anger can become rage so easily and like really feels as if it’s love. But I promise you that in a few months, a year or a few years things change so tremendously for you. Stay in school and focus on who you want to be. You will never get these years back so don’t let you or someone else take them away.

When we say children are our future it’s because we know how important children are. We not only want you to succeed in life but need you to.

You are all that important.

Regal House Furniture – a family business turning houses into homes!

The family owned and operated Regal House Furniture opened their doors in the North End in 1988.

Interested in turning your house into a home? Have an interior design project on the horizon? Opening a new business? The North End’s family owned and operated Regal House Furniture has been the South Coast’s experts in designing and installing comfortable, quality living spaces for almost 3 decades!

Started by father Albino, mother Delores, Debra and brother Steven in 1988, Regal House Furniture quickly cemented themselves as the “go to” furniture store in the region. When Debra’s father retired in 2010, she took over. Now husband Bruce does the marketing and media, and her cousin Peg is the head bookkeeper. When I say family owned and operated, I mean it!

One living room setup of hundreds in the massive showroom.

What Regal House Furniture brings to the table – pardon the pun – is the perfect combination of small town business with a large chain professionalism. Here is one of the last furniture stores in New England where people actually know your name and they remember all your past projects and know where you are going with you projects. This is born out by the fact that they are thriving in spite of the presence of large furniture stores and chains.

Regal House Furniture has a contemporary approach to traditional design and offer a a large diversity when it comes to styles and approaches. Best of all is that their service and furniture is affordable for all budgets – a byproduct of the combined buying power of a 1,500 store buying group. You reap the savings. They also do that little extra that you won’t see from chains. For example, if you order a mattress or mattress set over $399, they will deliver it AND assemble it when they arrive.

Since the staff of twenty is comprised of friendly, specialists that have decades of experience, they can really cut down on cost and time when it comes to your projects or needs. If you can imagine Google and Wikipedia personified, you’ll get an idea of what it’s like to interact with someone on the staff. Difference is you get instant answers and great advice without having to cull through pages and pages of websites. They will assist you with floor plans, paint colors, fabric selection and anything else and get this: at no extra charge.

Staffed by friendly, welcoming locals!

If you visit their Facebook Page you will see that they interact with each and every customer – a nice touche since Facebook is a leisure and many businesses don’t bother. They are very accessible. So you can communicate by phone in, email, or Facebook before, during and after the purchase. There’s no riding off into the sunset – Regal House is after a relationship.

Having said that, the singular best method to see what Regal House Furniture is about is to visit the show-room. You will be amazed at how massive it is inside. Being a small, family business does not mean they can’t compete with the chains!

The comfortable, welcoming showroom is positively jam-packed with far more than just furniture: window treatments, furnishings, accessories, flooring (including sustainable cork flooring), mattresses, bedding, and much more. Regal House keeps up with the latest fashions, by updating the showroom on a regular basis: changing displays, paintings, new bedding and accessories. There are paint chips and thousands of fabric samples to browse through and a catalog room with hundreds of books – that means if you don’t see something you like in the showroom, it can be ordered for you.

An actual living room designed offsite by Regal House Furniture.

Regal House Furniture is simply one of the best resources in the area for high quality furniture, accessories, flooring, advice, and design help for projects as small as painting a few walls to a complete home renovation. They will quickly help you make your project a reality. The website is another valuable resource which allows you to browse all the top name brands that you will encounter – dozens of name brand furniture, home accent, mattress and even outdoor/law & garden companies. One of the most helpful is the “Room Planner” which is an easy to use online program that allows you to drag and drop furniture, colors, and accessories in a virtual room. Very neat!

The website also hosts a FAQ, info on financing, some videos and a link to the clearance center where you can browse specials and deals at mind-boggling low prices. There’s no need to head to Seekonk, Natick or to a large outlet store when there’s a solid name backed by experience right here in New Bedford.

Miss Z Photography specializes in milestones for newborn, maternity, boudoir, and more

One of many creative backdrops at Miss Z Photogrpahy.

There is no more powerful way to get a flood of memories than poring over pictures. Who hasn’t cracked open a photo album and had old memories flood in? These awoken memories evoke a smile, laugh or intense emotions – happiness, anger, melancholy or longing for days gone by. Life without pictures would be flat. Something would seem to be missing!

These days with the advent of smart-phones we eagerly capture important life events. We take scores of photos of newborns, an anniversary, birth or other milestones. We also love capturing “minor” events like dinner with besties, a colorful sunset, or foliage. Images are threaded throughout our day and rarely a day goes by that we don’t see an image whether physical or digital shots on the web or social media.

The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy even for siblings to have a natural smile!

While capturing fun, light daily events doesn’t require any talent – especially with apps and software that can remove red eye, crop and resize – it isn’t fun to get home after taking score of pictures of family visiting a newborn to find out that we forgot to include someone. Or that the image is blurry, unfocused, or the lighting is poor. Or that we should have used a genuine camera instead of the phone. You have such a limited time with a newborn – you don’t want to miss out on capturing those early moments in the proper fashion.

Besides, it’s easy to get so lost in the taking of pictures that we miss the event.

It is prudent and practical to leave capturing photographs of the most important milestones in our lives to the experts. To those who have years of experience with lighting, focus, and other technical aspects. These images will be glanced at over and again through our entire lives and even passed down from generation to generation. Having poor images of these great moments is something one could regret. Having fantastic, professional images of these events is a much better alternative!

Miss Z Photography is a fully licensed and insured New Bedford based business specializing in maternity, birth, newborn, babies, children, families, head shots, boudoir, functions and more. Owner and photographer extraordinaire Abrah Zion was emphatic that her primary goal is to “…create family memories that will last a lifetime.”

Having had multiple discussions with Abrah and spent hours poring over her work, I can vouch for her energy, enthusiasm, passion and ability. Passion is the ingredient that is always lacking in inferior work in any field. Lots of passion is a key ingredient to success and driving force to learn, improve and excel. Abrah has this in abundance as anyone who has spent any time listening to her discuss her work or has had actually experienced it.

A warm, welcoming, professional setting.

This love for photography started at an early age as she looked over old black and whites of her parents and grandparents. Studying the story behind each family snapshot and yearbook taught her the power of images and she began to develop an interest in photography as an art and science. Her first camera was “…one of those dinky ones in the 1980’s that took a 110 cartridge for film. But I loved it and took it everywhere and took pictures of everyone and everything!”

Born at St. Lukes Hospital, Abrah has deep roots in the city she loves. When she was laid off from her job in corporate America, she had difficulty finding work, so felt perhaps it was the time to take a chance with her love of photography. Opening a studio here in New Bedford was an obvious choice for her. She is a big supporter of the local economy and feels that New Bedford has a ton of character and history. Four years later, she hasn’t looked back.

Abrah takes photography and her customers very seriously. As talented as she is, she is constantly seeking out new skills and spending time with some of the powerhouses in photography like renowned newborn and maternity photographer to the stars Ana Brandt. She is fully licensed with city, state and with federal governments and is also fully insured. In addition, she belongs to the Professional Photographer’s of America.

What Abrah discovered to be particularly rewarding was that her love for photography was matched by the powerful affect her images have had on family, friends and customers. She eagerly looks forward to seeing the expressions on people’s faces and hearing the responses.

Smiles like this one can be relived and enjoyed for years.

These connections are important for her as she has an old-world outlook on her business. Relationship is of the utmost importantance for her. She wants and needs to know her customers leading up to a session. She feels that knowing who they are and what they are hoping to get out of the session is integral to a successful photo shoot or what she calls an investment. She feels that her customers are investing in their future, so she wants to make sure she meets their high demands and expectations by doing the best possible job that she can.

Having said that her sessions are very laid back and lots of fun!

Her products themselves, are very high end – the prints come from top professional printers that only professional photographers utilize. When you see and touch one of her prints, you instantly realize the superior quality and know it’s something that is going to last. She won’t waste all that time, effort and energy to place the images on anything but the best – you can proudly display your family as true artwork on framed photos and heirloom quality canvases.

All of her photographs are also redundantly backed up to three different places – computer, external drive and cloud. This is a direct result of some horror stories that she has heard about people spending money on a session only to find out the images have been wiped. It’s a regret neither the photographer or the customer wants to experience – that captured opportunity and accompanying memories are lost forever. You won’t have to worry about that with Miss Z Photography.

Miss Z Photography also does boudoir and maternity sets.

When asked about some helpful pointers for amateurs like me who have ten thumbs, she said “I think a lot of people don’t get in close enough when taking photos of their family and pets. They take it from far away. You really want to get up close and personal and catch those expressions. Don’t be afraid to zoom in and frame the face(s). Utilize natural light! It looks so much better than flash and you’ll avoid red eye!”

In addition to the fine photography that Abrah offers, she is a proud supporter and volunteer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a non-profit organization of professional photographers who offer their services for free to parents who have lost a baby. She also volunteers for Capturing Hopes Photography another group of professionals who specifically photograph babies in the NICU (Neo Intensive Care Unit).

Miss Z Photography has made hundreds of people in the greater New Bedford area and beyond happy, happy. Her website has real world stories as does her Facebook reviews page which is currently at a stellar 4.8 stars out of 5 stars. Gift certificates can be purchased directly online as is the pricing for her sessions or investments.

If you would like to see more of Abrah’s talent, you can check out more photos on her Facebook, website portfolio or any of the links provided below. She also frequently has some great promotions so be sure to check back every now and then.

The Greater New Bedford unemployment rate is much higher than the rest of Massachusetts, but believe it or not there really are a lot of jobs available for qualified applicants. Sometimes the barrier to a new job can be the lack of information on available job openings.

Mary’s Mini Dogs: nostalgic comfort food….with a twist!

Mouth watering mini-dogs that have a snap to them – only one place you can get them!

Friends, fellow foodies and countrymen lend me your ears…er…eyes. We’re going to take a ride down Gustatory Lane, so buckle up! There’s a new foodie heaven on the block and it’s called Mary’s “Home to the Mini-Dog.” What? You don’t know what a mini-dog is? Neither did I…read on!

Do you have fond memories of growing up and devouring good old fashioned comfort food like hot dogs, mac and cheese, onion rings and the like? Often mom was just trying to save a few bucks, so went the comfort food route – thank goodness! What began as a movement by thrifty moms everywhere evolved into a foodie’s delight: comfort food. When we “grew up” (drat) we ate out at restaurants more, got take out from fast food chains or Chinese cuisine, or some of use the lost art of cooking our own meals – but comfort food wasn’t always on the menu and it was often not mom’s recipe.

One of my new favorite spots on plant earth for comfort food just like mom made is Mary Hocking’s Mary’s Home to the Mini Hot Dog & Steamed Cheeseburger on Acushnet Avenue near “the pool hall.”

A product of Mary’s Mini-Dogs: happy smiles and full bellies!

Since it opened just a few weeks ago, it has been making some serious “noise” in the foodie world. I visited Mary on her second day open and after some candid conversation found out that she was a fellow foodie that was chasing a passion of hers: cooking. When you get a foodie in the kitchen who grew up cooking, you know that something special is coming to the table.

Her passion comes through when discussion her new venture – she is clearly motivated, energized and inspired. She abandoned the corporate world as a Chief Financial Officer to chase this passion. Not only was she just a bunch of fun and sheer delight to talk with, but she moved around the kitchen making orders for the customers like she was tying her shoelaces. This is what she is good at it. This is a talent and like all talents, it comes very naturally and with a certain ease.

Now, let’s talk about why you are reading this article – not for the hack writing, not for my rugged bad looks. FOOD. Mouth-watering, bringing-you-back, delicious food. Food so good that on my first visit a gentleman who was dining there already actually proposed to Mary. Honest to goodness, true story. After talking to Mary, it turns out he wasn’t the first one!

Mary’s Mini Dogs has all those popular food items that we love so much and has even added a little twist. Hamburgers/cheeseburgers? Check. Hot dogs? Check. Mac and cheese? Check. Onion rings? Check.

Located in the same building as the pool hall and Wash World next to CVS.

But what about that twist?

Let’s come back to that mini-dog. Sure, she has hot dogs of the regular size that compete with anyone in the area. But what she offers that separates her from the pack are the mini-dogs. These are a smaller version of our American icon, but these are a transplanted regional specialty from Albany and Troy, New York where Mary spent many years. These dogs have been around since the 1920s and feature a natural casing which contributes to the snap when you take a bite into them. Sure, they are cute, but I have no problem putting a hurting on cute when its tasty!

Remember the diner hamburger before the food chains came along? That good old fashioned burger with just the basic toppings? Mary takes another transplanted tradition from Connecticut (featured on many television shows) and offers a steamed cheeseburger. After trying her steamed burger with gooey cheese dripping off it, I am convinced that it is hands-down the best way to have your burger. Flame broiled? Grilled? Forgettaboutit.

The steaming is healthier (means you can eat more than one!) and best of all the burger is JUICY. I mean juicy. Not a drop of grease – just natural juice. Who doesn’t love a juicy burger? It really doesn’t get better. And the cheese…so much melted cheese.

Another twist is a play on the blooming onion that has become really popular. Her version is called “Onion Petals.” These are choice selections of onion petals fried in a clean batter accompanied with a homemade, tangy and mildly spicy, dipping sauce that had just the right amount of horseradish.

With 35 toppings to choose from, the sky is the limit when it comes to variety.

Her last twist is a spin on Mac and Cheese: Mac and Cheese Bites. To be honest when I arrived, I was coerced by Rachael and my daughter to get them – it wasn’t my first choice. I am not a huge fan of Mac and Cheese. It just doesn’t seem like something you are supposed to order when going out. It’s something you make at home between episodes of Kung-Fu Theater and Creature Double Feature. The crunchy batter on the outside is the perfect compliment to the cheesy, steaming goodness inside. These brought me back to laying on the living room floor watching WLNE on Saturdays!

When I came on a second visit I tried the Taco On A Plate because it reminded me of the high school cafeteria’s Taco Boat. “Crushed nacho chips, taco meat, melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, & sour cream.” This was a genuine treat. The bonafide real deal.

Now let’s talk about what you can get on your dogs, burgers and more. Mary offers 35 toppings, 25 of which are free. Yes, you read that right. It’s not a misprint. All the toppings you want in any combination for free. The other ten toppings are only a pittance: 25 cents for mini-hot dogs and 50 cents for traditional sized hot dogs & burgers. These are like 1980s prices!

Yes, you can have your basic (boring!) condiments, but where Mary’s Mini-Dogs really shines are in the other toppings. Grab a napkin in case of drooling: a homemade Texas mat sauce that is out of this world – regular and spicy versions – bacon, pickles, jalapenos, banana peppers, everything bagel seed, sauerkraut, horseradish, Sriracha Mayo, crushed Fritos or nacho chips, salsa and more.

Crunchy tater tots with a mini-dog.

For her burgers and dogs, you can also get that Texas meat sauce, nacho cheese sauce, cream cheese, Provolone, potato salad or even the aforementioned onion petals! Some of the more popular combinations get there own name:

  • The Jon: Texas meat sauce, jalapenos and bacon.
  • The Bagel: cream cheese, and everything bagel seed.
  • Reuben: sauerkraut, melted cheese, and Thousand Island Dressing.
  • Roxy: melted cheese and pickles.
  • BLT: Bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.
  • Philly: melted cheese and onions.

If you like boring…er…I mean, your standard toppings, you can have relish, ketchup, mustard and American cheese. No worries!

In addition to these, she offers a variety of other menu items like homemade Italian subs (she is Italian and these are authentic), tater tots, nachos with melted cheese and jalapenos, turkey sub, and ham and cheese. In the future, Mary’s will be offering a seafood chowder with shrimp, scallops, and lobster. In addition, specials such as homemade pasta, meatballs and sauce.

This is a place that will bring back a lot of fond memories. The inspired menu is affordable and just plain fun. To keep prices down, Mary’s does not accept debit or credit cards.

Mary will make you really feel like you are a second home. On top of all this Mary chooses a different local charity each month

Mary’s Home to the Mini Hot Dog & Steamed Cheeseburger is a place to simply have fun, wax nostalgic, leave happy with a full belly and not break the bank. I’m willing to bet that if you head down there and meet Mary and taste something from the menu, you will find a place that you will frequent regulary when you have the craving.

You will likely bump into me!

As good as it gets!

New Bedford and Silmo Packing Company’s role in bringing coffee syrup to the world

When was the last time you had coffee syrup?! (thebestthingeverandthensome.com)

Throughout the country – or the world for that matter – there are regional delicacies that can rarely, if at all, be found elsewhere. They make our little corner of the world special or unique. Something we call our own. The Midwest has Lutefisk. The Pacific Northwest has the Geoduck. Illinois has the Horseshoe Sandwich. New York City has Bialys. And on and on and on.

We have quite a number of our own regional delicacies and it just depends on how you want to cut up the region. Are we New England? The South Coast? Greater New Bedford? You could even chop up neighborhoods and find some differences. Cacoila, linguica, chourico, stuffed quahogs are just a few. But let’s talk about a debated and beloved one: coffee syrup.

Tell me that doesn’t look good! (thebestthingeverandthensome.com)

Coffee syrup is one of those regional specialties that we have in the South Coast that the rest of the country has either never heard of or has have heard of, but never tried. These people are deprived…nay, dare I say depraved!

If you have never had coffee syrup in your life, you have been brought up wrong. Abused. Neglected. Call your parents now and tell them that you need to talk or you’ll notify the Department of Social Services. It won’t matter that you are now middle-aged. They will sympathize and support you once you mutter the words “I’ve never had coffee syrup.”

The first time I realized the concept of regional delicacies was on a trip to Florida when I was about 10 years old. We stopped at a local diner for lunch and like always I requested coffee syrup with my grilled cheese. After a pause and a puzzled look, the waitress managed a “What do you mean? You want a coffee with milk in it?” How do you explain a concept that is as normal and natural as tying your shoes? How do you convey what is an iconic drink of extraordinary magnitude? Doesn’t everyone have coffee syrup…every day? My ten year old mind was blown.

Poor deprived waitress. Hopefully, she turned her life around.

Strangely enough, outside of New England there is one other place on the planet where coffee syrup is a regional delicacy: Australia. Go figure.

So when did this nectar of the gods get created? When did this item that all our friends and family members who have moved away, ask us to send them in the mail? (Just last month I sent a package to Arizona.) Who is responsible for spreading such joy across New England? Well, that is up for debate. The answer depends on where you are from. Rhode Islanders and Massachusett..ians..ers… both lay claim. In fact, it was made the state drink of Rhode Island in 1993.

So good, that you have to get it by the jug.

The Italians and Portuguese both say they came up with the idea. Since the Italians aren’t a large community in the South Coast, their voice has been obscured by the louder Portuguese “voice”. The Italians claim that they have been making it since 1895 in Providence and there may be some credibility to this claim: a version of coffee milk was a favorite of kids across Italy since the 19th century. This early concoction was a very thrifty and frugal way of not wasting the coffee grounds that the adults were drinking. While you couldn’t make more strong coffee from used grounds, you could make a treat by straining water and sugar thought the used coffee grounds.

The only problem with this claim is it is based solely in anecdotes and there are no historical records of it being manufactured. While there is no reason to disbelieve the anecdotes – they are likely true – the first historical record of it being produced and sold is right here in New Bedford is when the Silmo Packing Company opened its plant in 1932. The building and perhaps the company was there since 1920. Located at 1339 Cove Street – where the Inner Bay restaurant is today – the company was started by Portuguese-Americans Louis Silva and Carlos Desouza Morais. You more clever readers, just found out how Silmo got its name.

The only ingredients you need to get straight to happy, happy.

After Silmo opened its doors and started shipping it coffee syrup all over the South Coast and beyond. They cornered the market until 1938 when Italian-American, Alphonse Fiore’s company Eclipse Food Products of Warwick added it to their list of product offerings and began to mass produce it. The more popularly known Autocrat wouldn’t start selling it until the 1940s, in spite of the fact that had been around since 1895.

Silmo had tried to compete with the other companies and even underwent a name change, becoming MilkMate – which they ran out of 97 Cove Street. Unfortunately, they could not compete and in 1996 closed their doors for good. The rest, as “they” say is history. Poor cliche, but fitting.

So the answer to who brought the world coffee syrup is both, the Italians and the Portuguese, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, right?

You know what? Fie on that! New Bedford brought the world coffee syrup. If you disagree, show us your proof! Raspberries!
