Boston Police Department distributes personal hand-held safety devices to elderly residents in Chinatown

“Earlier today, Community Service Officers assigned to District A-1 (Downtown) along with members of the BPD Bureau of Community Engagement assisted several young volunteers as they distributed small, hand-held safety devices to local seniors in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston.

The electronic devices are equipped with a bright flashing light and an audible alarm intended to prompt others to summon help in case of an emergency or to scare off any would-be attackers. Approximately seven hundred of these devices were acquired following an online fundraising initiative which was spearheaded by several Boston youths in response to recent incidents of violence directed towards elderly Asians across the country.

We thank our officers for their efforts and participation today but especially wish to recognize these young community caretakers for their service to our elderly neighbors in Chinatown.”-Boston Police Department.
