“At about 9:00 PM on Friday June 5, 2020, officers assigned to District C-6 (South Boston) confiscated a large amount of fireworks after responding to numerous calls and community complaints in the area of Gavin Way in South Boston.
On arrival, officers saw a group gathered in the parking lot of Saint Peter’s Church with several packages of fireworks in plain sight. All parties on scene claimed that they were unaware that fireworks were not only illegal in the City of Boston but across the entirety of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as well.
The officers confiscated all the remaining fireworks while taking the opportunity to educate and inform everyone gathered on scene that, in addition to the mandatory seizure, they could also face monetary fines for their actions.
BPD Public Safety Reminder: The Boston Police Department would like to remind the public that illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of our residents and their property and do not belong in our communities. Massachusetts General Law (Chapter 148, Section 39) clearly states that it is illegal for private citizens to use, possess or sell fireworks in Massachusetts.
It is also illegal to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. If you hear or see fireworks being displayed in your neighborhood, please call 911 immediately for a police response.
