Bishop Stang Spartans heading to finals after defeating Cardinal Spellman 60-57

Bishop Stang Spartans took on Cardinal Spellman at New Bedford High School in the MIAA South Division 3 Semi-Finals.

The first half was a close one, Stang outscored Spellman 15-13 in the first quarter, but was outscored 14-11 in the second quarter, leaving them trailing by 27-26 at the half.

They came out in the third quarter cold, unable to get their offense going Spellman outscored Stang 23-12 leaving the Spartans down 50-38.

The fourth quarter started slow, but Stang was able to cut the lead down from 12 to 5 at the 5-minute mark. Spellman attempted to slow the game down, but the Spartans defense forced turnovers and bad shots that led to points cutting into their lead.

With 17.8 seconds remaining, Bishop Stang was able to sink a basket and draw a foul, giving them a 1 point lead. They stopped Spellman from scoring, and were able to draw another foul sending them to the line where Brycen Goodine sank 2 foul shots, that would give Bishop Stang a 3 point lead with a few seconds left on the clock.

The Bishop Stang Spartans get the win against Cardinal Spellman 60-57 and move on to the South Division 3 Finals against Apponequet at 7:30 on Saturday at New Bedford High School.

Bishop Stang – 15,11,12,22 = 60
Spellman – 13,14,23,7 = 57
