Azorean Maritime Heritage Society Awards $6,500 in College Scholarships

The Azorean Maritime Heritage Society has awarded $6,500 in scholarships to six Greater New Bedford students.

The scholarships were presented by our Scholarship Committee, led by Chairwoman Barbara Traban, during the Society’s annual Friends & Family barbecue on July 28th at Community Boating Center in New Bedford.

This year’s AMHS scholarship winners are:

Noah Quintin, graduate of Nazarene Christian Academy, formerly of New Bedford and now Marion, is the recipient of our $1,500 Dr. Mary T. Vermette Memorial Scholarship. He is attending Rochester Institute of Technology in NY to study Computer Science/Game Design & Development.

Taylor Alves, graduate of Dartmouth High School, is attending Johnson & Wales University to major in Finance/Healthcare Administration. She received our $1,000 Faial Scholarship.

Catarina Pereira, graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and Fall River resident, plans to attend Providence College to study Political Science and Portuguese. She received our $1,000 Pico Scholarship.

Christopher Ng, graduate of Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School and resident of Dartmouth, will be attending Northeastern University to study Electrical & Computer Engineering. He received our $1,000 Bela Vista Scholarship.

Ruth Valesca Barbosa Amado, graduate of New Bedford High School, emigrated here from Cape Verde and is attending Roger Williams University to study Biochemistry. She is the recipient of our $1,000 scholarship in memory of Bernice Mae Dutra Georgadarellis.

Cody West is the recipient of our $1,000 Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) Scholarship, a joint scholarship which promotes maritime studies in our local community. Cody grew up in Maine and is now a Fairhaven resident. He currently attends NMI and will continue his final year of studies in Applied Science and Nautical Science this fall.

Many of the funds for these scholarships come from an Annual Scholarship fundraising dinner dance held every February. The annual fundraising dinner is a fun way to support these scholarships, meet new people, and enjoy a night out with friends.
