New Bedford Creative announces $400,000 in awards celebrating arts, culture, creative expression

Over thirty cultural events, programs, and special projects, and forty individual artists will receive Wicked Cool Places, ARTnet, and Art is Everywhere funding to keep New Bedford Creative. In total, $419,520 will support arts, culture, and creative expression in New Bedford through these awards.

The grant funding is part of the City of New Bedford’s investment in the arts using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, administered through the New Bedford Economic Development Council’s arts and culture-focused arm, New Bedford Creative.

Mayor Jon Mitchell commented, “A reverence for artistic expression was first woven into New Bedford’s identity in the whaling era, when the city was a global focal point for new ideas and creativity. And that sensibility has endured. With a foundation of thriving cultural institutions, a beehive of working artists, and broad civic support for the creative sector, New Bedford today is a thriving cultural hub. This investment will enable us to deepen and broaden the cultural experiences available to our residents and visitors alike.”

Wicked Cool Places is the grant program for making or keeping a place where things are happening and people want to be that involve residents, visitors or businesses in New Bedford’s neighborhoods. This grant was originally created in 2019 with funding by the City of New Bedford’s Arts, Culture and Tourism Fund, with additional support by Bristol County Savings Bank.

ARTnet is a new artist recovery and training network to help artists recover from the economic impacts of the pandemic by providing financial support, business planning support, training workshops, and access to a network of creative-entrepreneur peers.

Mayor Jon Mitchell announced the allocation of ARPA funds to arts and culture in the city at a special event in May, 2022. On that occasion he noted that “the artists that comprise New Bedford’s thriving arts community are themselves small businesses. Funding to accelerate their emergence from the pandemic represents a timely investment in our economy and will energize our cultural scene.”

Art is Everywhere is a grant program that prioritizes creative solutions to expedite the recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic in New Bedford’s neighborhoods. This grant was originally created in 2020 with funding by MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) and the Barr Foundation as one component of a broader “TDI Creative Cities” initiative to boost arts-based economic development.

“All the artists, groups and projects awarded ARPA funds have a proven track record of giving back to the City of New Bedford,” says Margo Saulnier, NBEDC’s director of creative strategies. “Now, they are getting the support they need to maintain momentum as we all recover from the pandemic and lay a solid foundation to keep New Bedford Creative.”

Grant applications were evaluated by independent review committees. Reviewers for Wicked Cool Places included members of the volunteer New Bedford Creative Consortium. Reviewers for Art is Everywhere are from organizations such as Coastline Elderly Services, Groundwork Southcoast, American Red Cross of Southeastern Massachusetts, PACE (People Acting in Community Endeavors), and City departments of Public Health and Community Services.

New Bedford announces $3 Million in investments to address homelessness, affordable housing

“Mayor Jon Mitchell has announced the city has allocated over three million dollars of HOME-American Rescue Plan Program (HOME-ARP) funding to reduce homelessness and increase housing stability in New Bedford.

The HOME-ARP Allocation Plan, which will be up for approval by the City Council on Thursday, March 9th, includes $900,000 for the development of affordable rental housing, $700,000 for development of shelter beds for the unhoused, $500,000 for rental assistance programs, and nearly $600,000 for non-profits to provide supportive services and community housing development initiatives. These investments are in addition to those made available through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), Continuum of Care (CoC), and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) programs.

“New Bedford residents have not been spared from state and national trends of escalating housing costs,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “These funds will be a critical part of an overall strategy to ease the burden of rising housing costs for our residents.”

HOME-ARP funding, allocated by the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARP), is the most recent federal relief package created to assist states, counties and local governments address the negative economic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. The ARP Act appropriated funds to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for distribution under its HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME). The City of New Bedford has been advised by HUD it will receive a total allocation of $3,175,399 in HOME-ARP funding upon submission of its plan.

In developing the plan, the Office of Housing & Community Development (OHCD) conducted several public meetings, held consultations with stakeholders, and conducted a survey of residents. The final draft of the plan was then made available for a 15-day public comment period.

Questions regarding the HOME-ARP Allocation Plan may be directed to Joshua Amaral, Director, or Jennifer Clarke, Deputy Director, of the Office of Housing & Community Development at (508) 979-1500 or by email at Joshua.Amaral@newbedford-ma.gov or Jennifer.Clarke@newbedford-ma.gov.”-City of New Bedford.

Massachusetts Police partner with Sheriff to hold catalytic converter etching event

“We partnered with the Middleton Police Department for a catalytic converter etching event at our Middleton facility.

Catalytic converters contain precious metals, are easy to steal, and thefts of these car parts are on the rise nationwide. These types of events put would-be thieves on notice that we won’t tolerate crimes like these in our communities.

A big thank you to Middleton Police Chief William Sampson, Detective Sgt. David Arathuzik, and ECSD employees Chris Smith, Jeff Cruz, and Tom Maguire for making this event a great success.” -Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger.

29-year old New Bedford man convicted of Child Rape sentenced to prison

“A 29-year-old New Bedford man was sentenced to serve 10 to 12 years in state prison after being convicted this week by a jury of his peers on charges that he raped a 13-year-old girl on multiple occasions, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced.

After a two-day trial in Fall River Superior Court, Samuel Adorno was convicted of four counts of Rape of a Child-Aggravated by Age Difference and one count of Enticing a Child. The trial was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Matthew Lopes and the state prison sentence was imposed by Judge Raffi Yessayan. The judge also sentenced the defendant to an additional three years of supervised probation, ordered him to have no contact with the victim and ordered him to register as a sex offender with the state’s Sex Offender Registry Board.

The defendant met the child during a family party in New Bedford in late 2017. The rapes occurred between that date and February of 2019.

“I want to thanks the jury for holding him accountable for this disturbing conduct. The defendant took advantage of his access to the victim, an underage girl, through a family relationship and repeatedly engaged in illegal sexual activity with her,” District Attorney Quinn said. “I commend the victim for coming forward and testifying under these difficult circumstances.”-Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The milestone cements Baptiste as the most winningest active coach in Division III basketball.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s basketball head coach Brian Baptiste reached his 700th career win today with a 68-57 road victory over Castleton University. In his 40th season as coach of the Corsairs, Baptiste’s win is the most among all active NCAA Division III coaches and 13th most across all Divisions.

Baptiste achieved his first win for UMass Dartmouth (then known as Southeastern Massachusetts University) against Anna Maria College on November 19, 1983. Over his career, Baptiste has won 12 Little East Conference Championships and made 14 Division III National Tournament appearances. Baptiste accrued 17 tournament wins and reached five sweet sixteens and one Final Four.

Baptiste led the 2021-22 UMass Dartmouth squad to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 1992-93 tournament run. He coached the team to a win over Emerson in the first round and Nazareth College in the second before falling to #1 seed Randolph-Macon who was dominant en route to winning the National Championship. His most successful season, 1992-93, saw the Corsairs win the Little East Conference Tournament and advance to the NCAA Division III Final Four, where they fell to the eventual national champion, Ohio Northern University.”
