K9 Alex Locates Hit and Run Suspect

Pictured here is K-9 Alex.

Early this morning, just before 2:30 a.m., the Charlton Barracks received a 911 call reporting they had just been struck by a pick up truck and the truck refused to stop. The caller maintained contact with the barracks and followed the vehicle off the highway to Ray St. in Grafton, where the suspect fled on foot.

Shortly thereafter, Tpr. Mark Augusta of the Charlton Barracks arrived on scene and requested K9 assistance. Four K9 MSP teams who were working a nearby saturation patrol arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Tpr. Jeff Johnson deployed K-9 Alex on a track from the crashed vehicle and quickly picked up a scent. Alex tracked through backyards and in between a row of bushes where he located the suspect.

Tpr. Johnson illuminated the suspect, who was lying on his back and refusing to show his hands. Tpr. Johnson made several commands for the suspect to show his hands and move out from the bushes, instead the suspect started kicking at the team. K-9 Alex apprehended the suspect and was able to pull him into the open where he was safely taken into custody.

The suspect was charged with operating under the influence (3rd off.), leaving the scene of a crash, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and operating after license suspension.

Aquila Theatre’s “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” at the Zeiterion

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center welcomes Aquila Theatre’s captivating production of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on Sunday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. One hundred and twenty five years after his debut, Sherlock Holmes remains the definitive and most famous detective in world literature. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich characters come to life in this unique production that re-envisions the legendary sleuth as a female detective; one who skillfully maneuvers the twisted web of London’s most intriguing cases with her split second deductions. Tickets from $27 to $37 are available at www.zeiterion.org, 508-994-2900 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford.

The Aquila Theatre brings its energetic physical style to this new adaptation for the theater. With actors drawn from the top British and American stages, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a thrilling and memorable ride, and Director Desiree Sanchez’s vision for the production is both simultaneously old and new. Her faithful rendition of three of Doyle’s original stories is combined with modern staging that incorporates elements of film noir and laugh-out-loud physical comedy. Of the decision to cast Sherlock as a female, D.C. Metro Theater Arts says, “…the choice to cast Loren O’Dair as the Sleuth herself is the boldest and most modernizing choice. Regardless of her gender O’Dair is a powerhouse presence on stage who conveys, in equal parts, the genius and condescension that make Sherlock Holmes such a complex and endearing character.”

Founded by in 1991 and based in New York City, Aquila Theatre is now one the foremost producer of touring classical theater in the United States with an international reach, visiting up to 60 American cities a year and traveling abroad with a program of two plays, workshops and educational programming. The company is regularly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and has performed at the White House on two separate occasions. Aquila has also received a Chairman’s Special Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for its innovative theater programming.

Tickets to Adventures of Sherlock Holmes range from $27-$37 and are available for purchase at www.zeiterion.org, by calling 508-994-2900, or in person at the box office at 684 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA. Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and two hours before each performance.

Faces Of New Bedford – #40: Danielle Lopez

Meet Danielle Lopez, 21-year-old Honors student at Bridgewater State University.

She is currently studying in Biology with the intention of obtaining her Doctorate in Dental Medicine. Although her current is very promising, thing’s haven’t always been so great.

When Danielle was just 8 years old, her mother was working to two jobs just take care of her and her 3 siblings. Due to unfortunate circumstances, she lost both of her jobs and was unable to find another position that would be able to support the entire family. Due to the jobs her mom held, she always found herself just above the poverty line, so they weren’t eligible for assistance during this period.

Shorty after, they lost their apartment and were forced to live in a tent at a local campground. For the next 3 months they bathed in coin operated showers and commuted back to New Bedford from Rochester for school and work. While her mother continued to work at her new job and strive to restore their living situation, they were eventually blessed with an RV to stay in.

Fast forward 13 years later, Danielle looks back at her mother’s sacrifice and perseverance, thankful that she learned what she had at such a young age. She also reflects on the time she spent at Dennison Memorial in the wake of these events, which really sculpted and molded her desire to learn. This has manifested itself in her current position, striving to create a better life for herself and her future family.

“The position you are in now isn’t where you are going to be forever, but if you don’t change the things you do then you are going to just perpetuate the cycle.”
